    Notes: The effect of upwinding on iterative performance of convection-diffusion problems is investigated. An analysis of the iterative method considered here leads to a criterion for selecting the optimal upwinding parameter to improve iterative performance for a class of two-dimensional convection-diffusion problems.     Notes: Four methods of implementing Morison wave-force calculations for offshore tubular-jacket structures on distributed-memory parallel hardware are presented The Morison equation is given and the method by which it is used to calculate wave forces on members of an offshore structure is briefly described. A brief background to parallel computing and a description of the transputer hardware and software available to the authors is also given. Program structure and methods of achieving parallelism are explained. A number of test runs on an example structure have been timed and the resulting speed-ups are discussed.

    Notes: A parallel element-by-element scheme is developed for finite-element solution of elliptic boundary-value problems. It is shown that, for a broad class of computational grids, the solution algorithm is totally parallelizable. Moreover, the conversion of an existing serial EBE code to a parallel code is seen to be quite simple. The method is implemented on the Alliant FX/8 and Sequent Balance parallel computers and ‘speedup’ performance studies are conducted for a representative elliptic PDE in two dimensions. The present procedure can be applied quite generally to other finite-element applications, and the associated programs can be modified in a straightforward way to implement the method.

    Notes: For plane stress/plane strain analysis, the 9-node quadrilateral element performs better than the corresponding 8-node element, especially for non-rectangular shapes. For improved element flexibility and lower computer cost, 2 × 2 quadrature is generally preferable to 3 × 3 quadrature. Unfortunately the 9-node element contains spurious zero-energy modes when under-integrated. A method is proposed to restrain these modes without significant loss of accuracy or added cost.

    Notes: A solution strategy for the analysis of nonlinear structures is described. The strategy is a simple extension of existing Newton-type procedures, and can easily be incorporated into existing computer programs.Earlier work which contributed to the development of the strategy is reviewed and the theory of the procedure is presented. Six examples, covering several different types of structural behaviour are described. These examples suggest that the strategy is remarkably stable and efficient.

    Notes: Global and element residuals are introduced to determine a posteriori, computable, error bounds for finite element computations on a given mesh. The element residuals provide a criterion for determining where a finite element mesh requires refinement. This indicator is implemented in an algorithm in a finite element research program. There it is utilized to automatically refine the mesh for sample two-point problems exhibiting boundary layer and interior layer solutions. Results for both linear and nonlinear problems are presented. An important aspect of this investigation concerns the use of adaptive refinement in conjunction with iterative methods for system solution. As the mesh is being enriched through the refinement process, the solution on a given mesh provides an accurate starting iterate for the next mesh, and so on. A wide range of iterative methods are examined in a feasibility study and strategies for interweaving refinement and iteration are compared.

    Notes: A general class of time-dependent co-ordinate transformations is introduced in a variational formulation for evolution problems. The variational problem is posed with respect to both solution and transformation field variables. An approximate analysis using finite elements is developed from the continuous variational form. Modified forms of the variational functional are considered to ensure the deforming mesh is not top irregular. ODE system integrators are utilized to integrate the resulting semidiscrete systems. In Part I we consider the formulation for problems in one spatial dimension and time, including, in particular, convection-dominated flows described by the convection-diffusion, Burgers' and Buckley-Leverett equations. In Part II the extension of the method to two dimensions and supporting numerical experiments are presented.

    Notes: A class of least-squares finite element methods has been developed for first-order systems and here we study this approach for hyperbolic problems. The formulation of the least-squares method is developed in detail and compared with the Petrov-Galerkin and Taylor-Galerkin procedures. A stability analysis is carried out and the extension to the non-linear problem described. Numerical comparison studies demonstrate the performance of the method and suggest that it is a promising alternative to existing schemes. Applications considered include the convection equation, inviscid Burger's equation and shallow-water equations.
