Notes: Summary Pre-meiotic and prophase I ovules ofCapsella bursa-pastoris (L.) Medic.(monosporic,Polygonum type of gametophyte development) were fixed routinely or incubated in a modified Gomori medium containing β-glycerophosphate as a substrate. Prior to the beginning of meiosis the potential meiocyte is ultrastructurally similar to the other cells of the nucellus and is distinguished only by its size and position. At the initiation of prophase I dramatic ultrastructural and ultracytochemical changes take place in the female meiocyte. These include the sudden appearance of cytoplasmic structures composed of single and multiple concentric cisternae, distinctive changes in plastids and mitochondria, and the blebbing of 0.3 μm double-membraned vesicles from the nuclear envelope. The concentric cisternae encapsulate portions of cytoplasm containing ribosomes, plastids, mitochondria, ER fragments and vesicles. Both single and multiple concentric cisternae localize high levels of acid phosphatase and function as autophagic vesicles (AVs) that sequester ribosomes and organelles for destruction during meiosis. Plastids stop dividing and become more spherical during prophase I. Some plastids localize acid phosphatase and many show continuities between the outer membrane and the plastid envelope and acid phosphatase-rich RER cisternae. Mitochondria appear as dense, contracted spheres or rods. Some mitochondria localize acid phosphatase but they do not show membrane confluencies with the ER. Some of the plastids and mitochondria that are segregated into the functional megaspore at meiosis II are destroyed but others apparantly survive meiosis and give rise to the plastid and mitochondrial populations of the young gametophyte (Schulz andJensen, unpublished). The lateral and end walls of the meiocyte show patches of intense aniline blue fluorescence and the chalazal end wall of the cell is perforated with large numbers of plasmodesmata.

Description: A Kevlar 49/epoxy chamber has been developed for the advanced propulsion module motor. This chamber was successfully designed, fabricated, and hydroproof-tested at 511.6 N/sq cm. The fabrication, interior dimensional inspection, and proof test are discussed, showing that the chamber will be capable of achieving the design burst pressure of 639.8 N/sq cm. The projected chamber growth at 448.2 N/sq cm is presented based on the strain gage and volumetric growth data collected in that proof test.

Description: Line-focusing acrylic Fresnel lenses with application potential in the 200 to 370 C range are being analytically and experimentally evaluated. Investigations previously conducted with a 56 cm wide lens have been extended by the present study to experimentation/analyses with a 1.8 by 3.7 m lens. A measured peak concentration ratio of 64 with 90 percent of the transmitted energy focused into a 5.0 cm width was achieved. A peak concentration of 61 and a 90 percent target width of 4.5 cm were analytically computed. The experimental and analytical lens transmittance was 81 percent and 86 percent, respectively. The lens also was interfaced with a receiver assembly and operated in the collection mode. The collection efficiency ranged from 42 percent at 100 C to 26 percent at 300 C.

Description: A 71 cm diameter 74 cm length boron/epoxy composite rocket motor chamber was designed based on the geometric configuration of the JPL Applications Technology Satellite titanium alloy apogee motor chamber. Because analyses showed large stress concentrations in the domes, the configuration was modified using the same basic constraints for openings and attachments. The rocket motor chamber was then fabricated by filament winding with boron/epoxy tape and hydrostatically tested to failure at 264 N/sq cm, 57.2 N/sq cm above the design value. Two more rocket motor chambers were fabricated with the same basic constraints, but shortened to 57.6 cm for a smaller propellant load. The first of these short chambers failed in proof because of filament winding fabrication difficulties. The second chamber was successfully fabricated and passed the hydrostatic proof test.

Description: Line-focusing acrylic Fresnel lenses with application potential in the 200-370 C range are being analytically and experimentally investigated. The measured solar concentration characteristics of a 1.8 by 3.7 m lens and its utilization in a solar collection mode are summarized in this paper. A peak concentration ratio of 64 with 90% of the transmitted energy focused into a 5 cm width was achieved and demonstrated the feasibility of the Fresnel lens solar concentrator concept.
