    Description: The status of modelling the coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS) spectra of molecules important in combustion, such as N2, H2O, and CO2, is reviewed. It is shown that accurate modelling generally requires highly precise knowledge of line positions and reasonable estimates of Raman linewidths, and the sources of these data are discussed. CARS technique and theory is reviewed, and the status of modelling the phenomenon of collisional narrowing at pressures well above atmospheric for N2, H2O, and CO2 is described. It is shown that good agreement with experiment can be achieved using either the Gordon rotational diffusion model or phenomenological models for inelastic energy transfer rates.

    Description: The methods of synchronizing precision clocks will be reviewed placing particular attention to the simpler techniques, their accuracies, and the approximate cost of equipment. The more exotic methods of synchronization are discussed in lesser detail. The synchronization techniques that will be covered will include satellite dissemination, communication and navigation transmissions via VLF, LF, HF, UHF and microwave as well as commercial and armed forces television. Portable clock trips will also be discussed.

    Description: A new silicon solar cell is described which has an array of small-area conduction paths to transport current directly through the wafer to metal electrodes on the back. This design eliminates grid shadowing and many of the other losses inherent in conventional cells. Early experimental units without texturing or antireflection coatings show 13.3% efficiency under air-mass-one illumination insolation.

    Description: A high-sensitivity interferometer has been developed and used to detect boundary-layer transitions over a symmetric airfoil. The tests, which included both natural and roughness-induced transitions, were performed in a transonic wind tunnel. The measurements showed a peak amplitude rms and higher energy in the spectrum of the signal associated with transition. The tests revealed that the interferometer system can be used to locate the transition region over three-dimensional aerodynamic models.

    Description: The most promising way to reduce the cost of silicon in solar cells while still maintaining performance is to utilize thin films (10 to 20 microns thick) of crystalline silicon. The method of solution growth is being employed to grow thin polycrystalline films of silicon on dissimilar substrates. The initial results indicate that, using tin as the solvent, this growth process only requires operating temperatures in the range of 800 C to 1000 C. Growth rates in the range of 0.4 to 2.0 microns per minute and grain sizes in the range of 20 to 100 microns were achieved on both quartz and coated steel substrates. Typically, an aspect ratio of two to three between the width and the Si grain thickness is seen. Uniform coverage of Si growth on quartz over a 2.5 x 2.5 cm area was observed.

    Description: Coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS) is a coherent wave-mixing process in which the signal emerges as a laser-like beam in a precise direction. The spectroscopic technique is appropriate to spatially and temporally resolved measurements of temperature and major species concentrations in combustion. It has been generated from all of the dominant constituents in air-fed, hydrogen, and hydrocarbon fueled combustion, and found applicable to practical combustion systems. High pressure effects on CARS spectra have also been examined.

    Description: Four different boundary-layer transition detection techniques, namely liquid crystals, very thin hot films, IR photography, and an optical interferometer, were compared using the same flat plate model for the same tunnel conditions. The comparisons, conducted at NASA-Langley, involved not only their sensitivity to transition but also their ease of use. The thin films, as expected, gave excellent quantitative information and were used as the standard for evaluating the other techniques. Both the liquid crystals and IR photography were able to detect transition before the boundary-layer intermittency factor had reached 50 percent. The optical interferometer was unsuccessful. Conditions sampled included a range of Mach numbers from 1.5 to 2.5 and unit Reynolds numbers from 1.0 to 4.0 million/foot.

    Description: Investigations of coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS) in a variety of flames are presented. Thermometry has received the primary emphasis in these studies, but species spectral and sensitivity studies will also be described. CARS is generated by mixing a 10 pps, frequency-doubled neodymium 'pump' laser with a spectrally broadband, laser-pumped, Stokes-shifted dye laser. This approach obviates the requirement to frequency scan the dye laser and generates the entire CARS spectrum with each pulse permitting, in principle, instantaneous measurements of medium properties. CARS spectra of N2, CO, O2, H2O, CO2 and CH4 in flames will be presented. In general these spectra exhibit very good agreement with computer synthesized spectra and permit measurements of temperature and species concentration. To illustrate the applicability of CARS to practical combustion diagnostics, CARS signatures from N2 have been employed to map the temperature field throughout a small, luminous, highly sooting propane diffusion flame
