    Notes: Studies of K(nd) Rydberg atom collisions (10≤n≤100) are used to investigate electron attachment to trichlorotrifluoroethane 1,1,1-C2Cl3F3 (TCTFE) at subthermal energies. The Rydberg atom data indicate that electron attachment to TCTFE occurs predominantly through dissociative capture and that the cross section for this process is large. Differences between the present results and those obtained using the threshold photoelectron spectroscopy (TPSA) technique are discussed.

    Notes: : Data from a recent survey conducted by the Adirondack Lake Survey Corporation were used to evaluate the influence of lake surface area on the acid-base status of lakes in Adirondack State Park, New York. Acid neutralizing capacity (ANC) in the small lakes (〈 4 ha) occurred more frequently at extreme values (〉 200, 〈 0 μeq L−1), whereas larger lakes tended to be intermediate in ANC. Consequently, acidic (ANC ≤ 0) and low-pH lakes were typically small. The small lakes also exhibited lower Ca2+ concentration and higher dissolved organic carbon than did larger lakes. Lakes ≥ 4 ha were only half as likely to be acidic as were lakes ≥ 1 ha in area. These data illustrate the dependence of lake chemistry on lake surface area and the importance of the lower lake area limit for a statistical survey of lake water chemistry.

    Notes: Performance characteristics of a microchannel plate photomultiplier tube having a resistive anode readout were measured under a wide variety of applied potentials. Some general conclusions were reached regarding spatial resolution and counting efficiency. The photocathode-to-VMCP and VMCP applied potentials should be as high as possible, consistent with the dark-current performance and safe operation. The VMCP-to-ZMCP applied potential should be retarding, about −100 to −300 V. The ZMCP applied potential must be chosen to put the average pulse height in an optimum range for the position electronics and the gain values resulting from the VMCP and VMCP-to-ZMCP applied potentials. Finally, spatial resolution is a strong function of the ZMCP-to-anode applied potential, and a typical optimum value is 100 V. The smallest measured line-spread function full width at half maximum was approximately 50 μm.

    Notes: Rate constants for ion production in collisions between potassium atoms in nd Rydberg states and SF6 and CCl4 have been investigated over a range of principal quantum numbers n between 9 and 45. The data suggest that, at the lower values of n, electrostatic interactions between the product ions become important and lead to a marked decrease in free ion production for both target species. The data also demonstrate that only a small fraction of the energy released by dissociative electron attachment to CCl4 appears as kinetic energy of the Cl− fragment.

    Notes: Associative ionization in K(nd)–H2O collisions has been investigated for values of n in the range 9 to 13. The measured rate constants are very small, ∼6×10−12 cm3 s−1, and are much less than those reported for associative ionization in Na(np)–Na collisions at similar n. Possible reasons for this difference are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract. In germinating seedlings of Sinapis alba, nitrate reductase activity is under phytochrome control and becomes accessible to phytochrome at about 15 h from sowing. The induction of the enzyme with pulses of light is strongly affected by pretreatments given prior to 15 h, also acting through phytochrome. It is shown that the effects of these pretreatments can persist undiminished for a considerable time (〉40 h) but do not alter the pattern of the subsequent responsiveness to Pfr. The nitrate reductase response is compared with other data pertaining to a similar response.

    Notes: Abstract In germinating seedlings of Sinapis alba nitrate reductase activity as assayed in vivo becomes accessible to phytochrome control between 15 and 17 h after sowing. Phytochrome operates via the high irradiance reaction to control nitrate reductase activity in the period 15 to 20 h after sowing. Both continuous red light and far-red light elicit this response with a strong fluence rate dependency being apparent in each case. The induction of nitrate reductase activity by light pulses at 20 h after sowing is greatly influenced by red light pre-treatments (operating through phytochrome) given between 0 and 15 h after sowing. Low fluence rate pre-treatments reduce the effectiveness of a subsequent pulse to below the level of a dark control whilst high fluence rate pre-treatments greatly increase the effectiveness of a subsequent pulse.

    Notes: Abstract. A proposal has recently been made (Johnson & Tasker, 1979) that phytochrome acts through the multiplicative effect of two components of the phytochrome system, only one of them being Pfr and the other a product of the photoconversion reaction Pr→Pfr. It has been shown previously that HIR action spectra based on this assumption show a good resemblance to the observed responses with the possible exception of the red region of the spectrum. There, a greater response is predicted than is often observed and fluence rate dependency is predicted, on which matter there is disagreement in the literature.The experiments reported here show that, because chlorophyll is formed in red light but not in far-red, chlorophyll screening lowers the effective fluence rate in red light with respect to phytochrome. When such screening is eliminated the observed responses show strong fluence rate dependency, as predicted. Evidence is also presented to support the conclusion that the two proposed effectors must act together multiplicatively.

    Notes: Abstract San 9789 (norflurazone) blocks carotenoid synthesis which allows chlorophyll bleaching in the light, and has been used recently as a tool to study phytochrome responses without interference from photosynthetic pigments. By using this herbicide, we have found that nitrate reductase activity and light dependent nitrite reduction were lost simultaneously from achlorophyllous areas of barley leaves, with the green areas of the leaf tip still showing high activities. By contrast nitrate reductase is still present in the roots of herbicide treated plants. We suggest that intact chloroplasts are required for the presence of nitrate reductase in barley leaves.
