    Notes: Abstract An inducible transposable element, termed INAc (inducible Activator), was constructed for development of a gene tagging system in higher plants. The advantage of such an inducible element is that, unlike the native transposon, its excision can be induced at any time during plant development and the resulting mutants are stable after removal of the inducer. A fusion of the SA inducible promoter (PR-1a) with the Ac transposase gene was inserted together with a hygromycin resistance gene between ca. 400 bp sequences from each end of the maize Ac element, yielding INAc. The INAc element was introduced into tobacco and tomato plants. A high frequency of spontaneous transposition was apparent in primary transformed tomato calli but not in tobacco calli. Treatment of tobacco plants with salicylic acid induced transposition of INAc in both somatic and germinal tissue, with germinal transposition events being revealed by characterization of the progeny of transformed plants whose flowers were exposed to SA. The INAc element thus exhibits potential for development of an inducible transposon system suitable for gene isolation in heterologous plant species.

    Notes: Abstract The past decade has seen increased applications for millimeter waves both in commercial and defense activities. Conventional millimeter-wave solid-satate sources were built in waveguide, suspended stripline, and finline. Fabricating these components in microstrip provides advantages of light weight, small size, and low cost. This paper summarizes the recent developments in millimeter-wave microstrip solid-state sources and amplifiers. The design and performance of these components will be presented.

    Description: An analysis is carried out to determine the discontinuity susceptance of a circular or rectangular aperture in the transverse plane of a circular waveguide. Closed-form solutions based on the scattered amplitude calculation and aperture coupling theory are derived. Example solutions for a small circular aperture and a resonant rectangular aperture are given. The calculated results agree very well with the experiments. The results have many applications in the design of circular waveguide components and circular waveguide-backed aperture antennas.

    Description: A circular patch antenna fed by an aperture-coupled microstrip line has been demonstrated at 29.3 GHz. The patch was enclosed by a cavity to reduce surface-wave interactions in an array environment and to improve heat dissipation when using active devices. The antenna exhibited a 2:1 input VSWR (voltage standing wave ratio) over a bandwidth of 12 percent from 27.52 to 30.95 GHz. The antenna should have applications in conformal phased arrays at millimeter-wave frequencies.

    Description: Circuits of rectangular waveguides coupled to a cylindrical cavity have been studied. Two types of circuits were developed: a high-power four-way power divider/combiner with less than 0.5 dB insertion loss over a 20 percent bandwidth and a high-power four-port cross-over circuit with less than 0.7 dB insertion loss and 20 dB isolation at X-band. To demonstrate the feasibility of the first circuit, a power combiner was built by connecting four Gunn oscillators to the four rectangular waveguide ports of the radial waveguide. A power combining efficiency of over 70 percent was achieved at X-band. The second circuit was used to feed a dual-polarization cross-slot antenna backed by a cylindrical cavity.
