    Notes: Purpose - A significant garment restyling tool was developed to perform garment design in three dimensions. It provides the professional designers the abilities of 3D garment creation, restyling, omni-angle visualization, and fitting evaluation on a digital mannequin model. According to the body tape-measurements defined in ISO 8559:1999(E) and ASTM D5219-99 (1999), the extracted feature lines on computer mannequin dominate the shape of the apparel and also its associated fitting results. In this paper, the garment creation by the provided interfaces and its outcomes based on the developed system kernel and its formulas described in part I of the paper is demonstrated. Design/methodology/approach - In part II of this paper, a three-dimensional garment creation and restyling software based on the kernel infrastructure and formulas is implemented. Findings - Currently, three fundamental dresses, two basic collars, and sleeve are successfully implemented in the creation of free style mannequin-made apparels. Fitting results in static status are easily performed by detecting the allowances along the body feature lines and its near by. The base of an intuitive 3D computer-aided garment design and manufacture is gradually formed starting from here. Originality/value - In this paper, it is proved that garment creation and restyling can be achieved in three dimensions. This work provides a solution to how to manipulate a modifiable geometry in three dimensions and provide a friendly tool for reshaping.

    Notes: Purpose - This ongoing research revolute the conventional clothing design process by garment constructions in truly three dimensions rather than in two dimensions by ways of pattern design. The aim of the research is to develop a computer-assisted clothing design tool in complete three dimensions. It would provide the garment designers the capabilities of 3D basal garment creation, restyling, and static fitting analysis when wearing on a digital mannequin. The kernel of the design environment and the mathematical formulas used in garment creation are described, results and implementations will be presented later in part II of this paper. Design/methodology/approach - In this paper, a mannequin-based garment design and restyling tools in three dimensions is proposed. The tools are based on mathematical formulas which provide an intuitive way of computer-aided garment design. Findings - Free style creation on clothes is performed by the provided tools and its formulas behind. Feature-based mannequin model is initially constructed by its features interpolation. The crucial girths on garment, for instances, collar girth and sleeve girth are generated from the neck girth and the armhole girth, respectively. Based on the feature girths on the mannequin, garment surface is "radial grown" from the digital mannequin. B-spline surface, loft surface, and sweep surface are used to build blouse, sleeve, and collar for creation and restyling. Research limitations/implications - Basal garment is initially "grown" from the computer mannequin model, which means, size grading no longer becomes extra work. 3D restyling tool is then invoked to conduct versatile designs by exhibiting designers' imagination space. Static fitting analysis is easily performed by the corresponding features on the mannequin. Originality/value - In this paper, a new three dimensions method in clothing design for clothes style creation and restyling in three dimensions on a digital mannequin model is proposed. In this research, a truly 3D garment design tool is developed in order to break through currently paper draft design concept.

    Notes: A theoretical model accounting for the macropolarization effects in wurtzite III–V nitrides quantum wells (QWs) is presented. Energy dispersions and exciton binding energies are calculated within the framework of effective-mass theory and variational approach, respectively. Exciton-associated transitions (EATs) are studied in detail. An energy redshift as high as 450 meV is obtained in Al0.25GaN0.75/GaN QWs. Also, the abrupt reduction of optical momentum matrix elements is derived as a consequence of quantum-confined Stark effects. EAT energies are compared with recent photoluminescence (PL) experiments and numerical coherence is achieved. We propose that it is the EAT energy, instead of the conduction–valence-interband transition energy that is comparable with the PL energy. To restore the reduced transition rate, we apply an external electric field. Theoretical calculations show that with the presence of the external electric field the optical matrix elements for EAT increase 20 times. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The effect of electric field on the electronic structure of a spherical quantum dot is studied in the framework of the effective-mass envelope-function theory. The dependence of the energy of electron states and hole states on the applied electric field and on the quantum dot size is investigated; the mixing of heavy holes and light holes is taken into account. The selection rule for the optical transition between the conduction band and valence band states is obtained. The exciton binding energies are calculated as functions of the quantum dot radius and the strength of the electric field. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We investigate theoretically the electronic structure of InxGa1−xAs/GaAs near-surface quantum wells within the framework of the effective mass theory. We found that the energies of electron and hole states depend sensitively on the capped layer thickness, and the Stark shift is asymmetric with respect to the applied electric field, i.e., the blueshifts or redshifts are determined by the direction and the strength of the electric field. The asymmetric Stark shift is due to the image charge effect and the Coulomb interaction. The spatial distribution of the electron and hole changes significantly when the thickness of the capped layer and the electric field is varied. The exciton binding energy is enhanced significantly by the image charge effect and decreases rapidly with increasing capped layer thickness. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The magneto-Stark effect in a diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) coupled quantum well (CQW) induced by an in-plane magnetic field is investigate theoretically. Unlike the usual electro-Stark effects, in a DMS CQW the Lorenz force leads to a spatially separated exciton. The in-plane magnetic field can shift the ground state of the magnetoexciton from a zero in-plane center of mass (CM)/momentum to a finite CM momentum, and render the ground state of magnetoexciton stable against radiative recombination due to momentum conservation. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract A planning process formulates action assignments for various agents to accomplish a goal statement. In a real situation, unexpected environmental changes (called failures) may invalidate the preformulated plan. When a failure occurs, effective and efficient handling procedures must be taken to prevent irreversible damages. A failure-handling mechanism is a key component in a fault-tolerant system, which makes autonomous operation possible. There are two basic approaches to failure handling—replanning and recovery. In the replanning approach, the currently failure-encountered state is treated as a new initial state, and a brand-new plan is derived from scratch. On the other hand, the recovery approach preserves the applicable components of the original plan and makes necessary adjustments to the preserved plan components to fit the new state. This article presents a method of achieving recovery and compares its performance with replanning. In general, the recovery approach provides a better response time, and the replanning approach sometimes provides a better plan quality.

    Notes: Summary Contrary to most polymer membranes, the membrane composed of poly(maleic acid-co-styrene)-poly(ethylene glycol)(PMS-PEG) complexes gives separation factor for CO2 to O2 smaller than 1. While the unit molar ratio reaches 1, the separation factor for CO2 to O2 exhibits a minium. The temperature dependence of CO2 permeability is larger than O2 permeability, i.e. the permeation activation energy of CO2 (16 kcal/mol) is larger than that of O2 (3 kcal/mol). The separation factor for CO2 to O2 increases with increasing temperature. A tentative explanation is proposed for the results.
