Notes: This paper discusses the hypothesis that insulin undergoes a conformational change either before or during its binding to the receptor. The evidence for this is not conclusive but allows us to reconcile the following observations: (1) no chemical modification or deletion of invariant surface residues has abolished the hormone's activity - only reduced its potency. (2) Reduction in potency follows many modifications to different side chains, both variant and invariant. (3) There are insulins with perfectly preserved structure (by the criteria of aggregation, spectroscopy, and x-ray analysis) that have markedly reduced potency. (4) Insulins with disturbed structure still exhibit real, sometimes substantial activity.

Notes: Syntheses of 1-(β-D-Arbinofuranosyl)-pyrimidinesNew synthetic methods of 1-(β-D-arabinofuranosyl)-pyrimidines are described. 1-(β-D-arabinofuranosyl)-uracil, 1-(β-D-arabinofuranosyl)-5-fluorouracil, 1-(β-D-arabinofuranosyl)-thymine, and 1-(β-D-arabinofuranosyl)-cytosine can be obtained in a high yield by the splitting of the anhydrobond in 2,2′-anhydropyrimidines in dipolar aprotic solvents, such as HMPT, DMF, and DMSO, respectively, in the presence of activated elemental copper.Unlike the formation of cyclopyrimidiens ribonucleosides are directly transformed to the corresponding arabinofuranosyl derivatives by the reaction with diphenylcarbonate and NaHCO3 in the presence of copper. The reaction proceeds probably via an intermediate formation of the cycloproduct. Further aspects on the mechanism are described.

Notes: An experimental study was carried out to investigate the moldability of polymer blends which form two phases in the molten state and the effect of mixing on the morphology and mechanical porperties of molded specimens. Blends of polystyrene with polypropylene and blends of polystyrene with high-density polyethylene were used for this study. A plunger-type injection molding machine (Van Dorn) was employed for molding specimens. To improve the mixing performance of the plunger machine, a Static Mixer (Kenics Corp., Super Nozzle) was installed between the heating cylinder and the sprue. A number of different molding conditions (injection pressure, temperature, injection time, cooling time) were varied, and molded specimens were collected under each molding condition. The specimens were used for studying the degree of dispersion in the blends and for determining the mechanical properties. A differential thermal analysis (DTA) experiment was also carried out to determine the degree of dispersion of the blends in molded specimens. It was found that a linear correlation exists between the blend composition and thermal spectra area of the blends tested.

Notes: We present here a method for superposing creep measurements on polymer concrete (PC), taken at different temperatures, imposed stresses, and resin contents, onto master curves, which describe the respective responses of various PC systems and their resin binders, to compressive, tensile, and flexural loads. This treatment is extended to systems reinforced with chopped glass fiber and montmorillonite (MMT). The general applicability of this superposition is tested with creep measurements by other investigators under tensile, compressive, and flexural loads. The results make it possible to predict the long-term creep behavior of unfilled as well as reinforced glassy polymer systems at different temperatures and load conditions from limited, short-term data. Success of the multiple superposition suggests a generalized constitutive equation, which describes the creep compliance of these systems as a product of separable functions of each parameter in the form of shift factors for temperature (αT), stress (ασ), resin content (αυ), fiber reinforcement (αF), and MMT reinforcement (αM): J(PC) = JrαTασαυαFαMtm, where Jr is an appropriately chosen reference creep compliance. The time exponent m does not depend on the chemical nature of the polymer matrix.

Notes: The aim of the present work was to investigate the effect of fiber pretreatment, fiber content, coating concentration, and also pretreatment procedure on the tensile properties of asbestos-epoxy composites. These composites comprise materials of considerable industrial importance. Asbestos exhibits unique properties. Occasionally it is difficult to disperse asbestos properly because the individual fibrils are very small and tend to agglomerate, but there is no evidence that asbestos is not easily wetted out by all systems. However, the higher potential aspect ratio of asbestos fibers compared with glass is not always realized in practice because the fibers break in length to fine diameters. Accordingly, the very considerable new surface created makes successful wetting difficult or impossible. For this reason, asbestos was precoated with a well adhered film of poly(hexamethylene adipamide), a polymer especially compatible with the epoxy phase. The pretreatment procedure followed was based on the principles of the interfacial polymerization involving the serial application to the asbestos of two immiscible solutions of hexamethylenediamine and adipoyl chloride. Accordingly, epoxy-nylon-chrysotile composites were made while varying pretreated fiber volume fraction, concentration of the polyamide coating, and reactants application order. Results obtained from tensile measurements proved quite interesting: Relative modulus of elasticity and relative ultimate strength exhibited a similar behavior when correlated with the ratio of polyamide to asbestos concentration. The corresponding curves pass through distinct maxima at which severe improvement of the material performance is effected. A thorough interpretation of these results is also included.

Notes: We have studied in detail the effects of synthesis conditions, such as current density and sodium dodecylsulfate electrolyte concentration, on the electrical and mechanical properties of polypyrrole. Flexible and self-supported films were electrochemically obtained using an aqueous solution containing pyrrole and sodium dodecylsulfate. The conductivity (2-20 S/cm) of the films increases with increases in either the current density or the electrolyte concentration. This behavior is caused by the structural changes induced by the different kinetics of film formation. Result indicate that the dodecylsulfate anion, incorporated as dopant in the polymer, randers it flexible with tensile strength in the order of MPa.

Notes: Loss of diamine and distinct transition phenomena from the solid to the melt state restrain solid-state polymerization (SSP) of nylon salts from industrial application. To depress these phenomena temperatures well below the melting point of the starting material are employed, resulting however in low reaction rates. The need to use catalysts arises and accordingly in this study hexamethylenediammonium adipate (HMA) particles were polymerized containing a strictly controlled amount of uniformly distributed catalyst. The catalysts included boric, sulphuric, and phosphoric acids with boric acid being the most effective in accelerating the reaction while eliminating the tendency to agglomeration. In general, catalyst concentration up to a critical value plays a considerable role in the overall behavior. Furthermore, in agreement with non catalytic processes, the reaction temperature remains an influential parameter. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
