Abstract: The authors and editors of this volume state that with the intensive growth of global industrialization and urbanization, the consumption of various resources and materials, such as energy, minerals, and even water, is increasing at an amazing speed, which poses great pressure on material resources. In addition, the massive utilization of materials has led to low efficiency, resulting in great wastes of resources as well as serious environmental pollutions and degradation, which has severely hindered the sustainable development of economy and society. In order to transit to sustainable development, it is necessary to improved resource efficiency, and circular economy and waste valorization are the best alternative ways for achieving this goal. This book aims to provide an in-depth description of circular economy and waste valorization, make assessments for circular economy and waste valorization in different regions and countries and determine the technological pathways and roadmap for achieving circular economy and waste valorization. More specifically: (1) Conceptions and Theories: Concepts and definitions of circular economy and waste valorization and their nexus and contributions to sustainable development. (2) Policy and Practice: Measurement and assessment of performance or sustainability for implementing circular economy and waste valorization. (3) Pathways and Prospects: Identification and prioritization of the barriers, strategies, technologies, and pathways for achieving circular economy and waste valorization. The book systematically and comprehensively introduces the definitions, concepts, framework and nexus of circular economy and waste valorization, analyzes and measures their performance and sustainability and provides the methods for investigating and prioritizing the barriers and strategies and determining the pathways and roadmap for their development. .

Notes: The electronic structure and local magnetic properties of the MnSb compound with or without substituted Pt atoms are calculated using the spin-polarized discrete variational method within local-density-functional theory and multiple embedded clusters models. Calculated charge transfer, spin moments and density of states of MnSb without doping Pt atoms agree well with experiments and augmented sphere wave calculations for MnSb crystal. Finally, the electronic structure and spin moments of MnSb doped with different concentrations of Pt atoms are calculated. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Transparent and colorless AlPO4 gel and glass are prepared via a simple aqueous sol–gel route using aluminum lactate and phosphoric acid as precursors. The stoichiometric AlPO4 glass derived from this sol–gel route has a mesoporous structure with a surface area of 504 m2/g after calcination to 600°C. With increasing gel-to-glass processing temperature, the average degree of P/Al connectivity increases. After sample calcination at 600°C for 4 h, 27Al MAS NMR spectra indicate that aluminum is almost completely converted into AlO4 units. 27Al{31P} rotational echo double resonance and 31P{27Al} rotational echo adiabatic passage double resonance NMR experiments as well as 27Al and 31P MAS NMR results further confirm that the prepared AlPO4 glass has a three-dimensional network based on alternating Al(OP)4 and P(OAl)4 tetrahedral units in analogy to the local structure of crystalline AlPO4.

Notes: In this paper the effect of isothermal forging process parameters on the microstructure andthe mechanical properties of TA15 titanium alloy was researched. The results of the tests indicatethat, in the range of temperature of 850 ºC~980 ºC and deformation degree of 20%~60%, with theincrease of temperature or deformation, as the reinforcement of deformation recrystallization, theprimary α-phase tends to the spherical shape and secondary α-phase transforms from the acicularshape to fine and spherical shape with disperse distribution, which enhance the tensile properties atroom and high temperature. With the increment of forging times, the spheroidization of primaryα-phase aggrandizes and secondary α-phase transforms from spherical and acicular shape to widestrip shape, which decrease the tensile properties at room and high temperature. The preferableisothermal forging process parameters are temperature of 980 ºC, deformation degree of 60%, andfew forging times

Notes: New nano-submicron textured Al2O3-ZrO2 ceramic eutectic composites were obtained from high-temperature melts produced by the SHS metallurgical process with intro-granular and 1-3 composite structures. Nano-micron textured ceramic composites were naturally self-assembled in one quick step by the SHS metallurgical process, in-situ synthesis and symbotic eutectic transformationunder high degree of undercooling. The experimental results indicated that the Al2O3-ZrO2 ceramic eutectic composites with ZrO2 fibers at the nano-submicron scale are only suitable for the ceramic composite with hypoeutectic composition under the conditions of the experiment

Notes: The large-scale Al2O3/YSZ ceramic plates were prepared by combustion synthesis under highgravity, the ceramics were mainly composed of random-oriented rod-shaped grains, and within therod-shaped grain aligned nano-submicron YSZ fibers were embedded. Compared to thehigh-performance directionally solidified ceramics, the hardness, flexural strength and fracture toughnessof the eutectic ceramics obtained in the experiment increased by 40.7~55.1%, 9.6~26.0% and172.0~240.0%, respectively. The increase in hardness and strength of the ceramics could be attributed tonano-submicron YSZ fibers and inter-phase spacing and the refinement of the eutectic grains; meanwhile,high-energy, large-angle boundaries between rod-shaped grains could introduce strong tougheningmechanisms involving crack-bridging and pull-out of rod-shaped eutectics

Notes: A new near-net-shape technology, namely, self-reactive spray forming, to prepare ceramicpreforms with low cost was proposed by combining the self-propagating high-temperature synthesis(SHS) with the metal spray forming. The feasibility of the technology was illustrated. And TiC-TiB2-based structural ceramic was prepared by the new technology. The microstructure of the self-reactivespray formed preforms was analyzed. It was shown that the self-reactive spray formed preforms arecomposed of four kinds of structure, which takes on the characteristics of rapid solidification. They aregriseous continuous base phase TiC0.3N0.7, black columnar grain TiB2 with the size of 100nm-1μm, whiteby-product phase TiO2 distributing along the boundary of the base phase, and a few of black anomalouspores respectively

Notes: The design on joining of metal and ceramics in composite pipes fabricated by the SHS metallurgical process is carried on with adding (TiO2 +Al+C+Ni) subsystem in(CrO3+Al) system, and the composite pipes with three-layer structure of steel substrate, intermediate alloy and lined ceramics are fabricated with low cost and high performance. Combustion determination and mechanical test indicatethat adding suitable amount of Ni powder in combustion system rather than (NiO+Al) subsystem can cause combustion behavior of a whole system and volume fraction of the carbides to be controlled easily, and is beneficial to improve joining of the intermediate alloy and steel substrate, causing compressionstrength and compression shear strength of the composite pipes to be increased greatly

Notes: In this paper, a new generation method for diamond turning non-axisymmetry asphericmirrors is introduced. A rotary arm that carried a diamond tool combined with fast tool servo wasused to replace the straight guides employed by most diamond turning machines. The micro linearfeed of the fast tool servo was real-time calculated with the use of high resolution angular feedbackon the work spindle and the swing tool. Synchronized motion of the fast tool servo according torotating angles of the workpiece and the diamond tool produced ultra-precision non-axisymmetryaspheric surfaces. The corresponding mathematical models of NC program are presented
