Notes: Abstract The paper deals with aging of concentrated poly(vinyl alcohol) solutions prepared from polymer samples which, prior to dissolution, were heated at various temperatures in an aqueous suspension or in the powder state. The effect of preheating is discussed on the basis of changes in viscosity and normal stress difference, measured during aging.

Notes: Abstract Aging of aqueous solutions of poly (vinyl alcohol) obtained by melting of gels, formed in the aging process from solutions prepared by the dissolution of the polymer in hot water, was investigated using non-Newtonian viscometry and normal stress measurement. It was shown that, if the gels undergo melting at the same temperature at which the original solutions were prepared, aging of such solutions proceeds in the same way as in the case of the original solutions. If melting occurred due to heating at lower temperature, the resulting solutions aged more quickly.

Notes: Abstract Rheological properties of a drag-reducing surfactant were investigated with the intention to find out the influence of shear rate and the duration of shear straining on the Shear Induced Structure. The ability of the surfactant to restore the broken drag-reducing network after the decrease of shear stress is well known. This property of reversible change caused by high shear at different flow conditions was compared to a more intensive mechanical straining by means of ultrasound. Observations using electronmicroscope and spectrometer are also presented.

Notes: Abstract Concentrated (typically 6%) solutions of a polystyrene-polyisoprene diblock copolymer in low viscosity paraffinic solvents form a micelle system by precipitating the polystyrene blocks, whereas the polyisoprene blocks are in solution. Besides viscoplastic behavior without thixotropy, this system exhibits a pronounced shear thickening in steady-state shear flow. The micelles are stable up to shear rates of more than 105 s−1. The properties of the solutions, especially the shear-thickening behavior, depend on the thermal history of the samples as well as on the solvent properties and are sensitive to flow field disturbances occurring in rotational viscometer devices with a profiled surface structure as commonly used to avoid wall slip in dispersed materials. The shear thickening is found to be related to the formation of a long-range ordered structure which also gives rise to the yield point. This long-range order enables aggregate flow with less energy dissipation at low shear rates. Shear-induced break-up of the aggregates appears as a shear-thickening transition which is observed in different types of flow fields.

Notes: Abstract A diblock copolymer of styrene and isoprene (hydrogenated) is dissolved in C11/C12 n-paraffins and o-xylene (or cyclohexane) mixtures. An unusual type of flow curve is obtained in certain ranges of composition and under certain conditions of preparation. With increasing shear rates, the flow curve is first of the Bingham type, followed by a sudden shear thickening at almost discrete rate of shear and then by a second branch of almost linear increase. Time independent and reproducible behaviour can be achieved. A linear model is proposed and the possible molecular arrangement that corresponds to this model is discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Es wird das Bewitterungsverhalten von Blei/Barium/Cadmium-bzw.
Notes: The weathering behaviour of lead/barium/cadmium-respectively barium/cadmium-stabilized profiles has been compared with new developed profiles which are free from heavy metals, the so-called HMF profiles. The weathering tests have been made out doors, in Xenotest 450, QUV(A), and QUV(B). The colourmetric values (ΔE, ΔL, ΔA, ΔB) and the loss of brightness were measured in dependence of weathering time. The results of QUV(A) measurements were not suitable for practical application, but the findings of the total colour difference of QUV (A) measurements correlate very well with the results of out door weathering. With respect to the surface attack HMF-stabilized profiles are equivalent to the lead/barium/cadmium standard profiles or even superior. The colourmetric behaviour of the new developed HMF profiles is equivalent to the lead/barium/cadmium standard profiles.

Notes: Ab initio minimal and split-valence basis set calculations have been performed on compounds that are involved in retro-inverso modifications, i.e., gem-diaminoalkyl and malonyl structures. These calculations are compared with empirical force field calculations and the minor differences discussed. All calculations agree that the preferred helical conformation of the isolated gem-diaminoalkyl and malonyl derivatives of residues found in the retro-inverso modified peptides is 5-8 kcal/mol lower than the Ceq7 conformation preferred by the isolated peptide residues. Population analysis and contour plots of the charge distribution are used to help explain the differences between the model compounds.

Notes: Rigid and flexible geometry calculations are described for N-acetylglycine-N′-methylamide, N-acetylalanine-N′-methylamide, and their retro-inverso analogs, bis(acetamido) methane, 1,1-bis(acetamido) ethane, N,N′-dimethylmalonamide, and N,N′-dimethyl-2-methyl-malonamide. The significance of relaxing all degrees of freedom, especially angular flexibility is demonstrated. The flexible geometry approach yields energy maps similar to those from rigid geometry, but the energy barriers between minima are substantially reduced, leading in general, to more probable transitions and a higher volume of accessible conformational space. Whereas the glycine and alanine derivatives exhibit their lowest energy minima in the Ceq7 region, the gem-diaminoalkyl and malonyl residues show their lowest minima in the “α-helical” regions. With respect to the effect of side chains (H versus CH3), the greatest conformational influence appears with the gem-diaminoalkyl residues. These results indicate significantly different conformational behavior of retro peptides and the implications of these pairwise incorporations of retro-inverso residues in peptide chains, are discussed.
