Description: The biogeochemical cycles of carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) are interlinked by primary production, respiration and decomposition in terrestrial ecosystems. It has been suggested that the C, N and P cycles could become uncoupled under rapid climate change because of the different degrees of control exerted on the supply of these elements by biological and geochemical processes. Climatic controls on biogeochemical cycles are particularly relevant in arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid ecosystems (drylands) because their biological activity is mainly driven by water availability. The increase in aridity predicted for the twenty-first century in many drylands worldwide may therefore threaten the balance between these cycles, differentially affecting the availability of essential nutrients. Here we evaluate how aridity affects the balance between C, N and P in soils collected from 224 dryland sites from all continents except Antarctica. We find a negative effect of aridity on the concentration of soil organic C and total N, but a positive effect on the concentration of inorganic P. Aridity is negatively related to plant cover, which may favour the dominance of physical processes such as rock weathering, a major source of P to ecosystems, over biological processes that provide more C and N, such as litter decomposition. Our findings suggest that any predicted increase in aridity with climate change will probably reduce the concentrations of N and C in global drylands, but increase that of P. These changes would uncouple the C, N and P cycles in drylands and could negatively affect the provision of key services provided by these ecosystems.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Delgado-Baquerizo, Manuel -- Maestre, Fernando T -- Gallardo, Antonio -- Bowker, Matthew A -- Wallenstein, Matthew D -- Quero, Jose Luis -- Ochoa, Victoria -- Gozalo, Beatriz -- Garcia-Gomez, Miguel -- Soliveres, Santiago -- Garcia-Palacios, Pablo -- Berdugo, Miguel -- Valencia, Enrique -- Escolar, Cristina -- Arredondo, Tulio -- Barraza-Zepeda, Claudia -- Bran, Donaldo -- Carreira, Jose Antonio -- Chaieb, Mohamed -- Conceicao, Abel A -- Derak, Mchich -- Eldridge, David J -- Escudero, Adrian -- Espinosa, Carlos I -- Gaitan, Juan -- Gatica, M Gabriel -- Gomez-Gonzalez, Susana -- Guzman, Elizabeth -- Gutierrez, Julio R -- Florentino, Adriana -- Hepper, Estela -- Hernandez, Rosa M -- Huber-Sannwald, Elisabeth -- Jankju, Mohammad -- Liu, Jushan -- Mau, Rebecca L -- Miriti, Maria -- Monerris, Jorge -- Naseri, Kamal -- Noumi, Zouhaier -- Polo, Vicente -- Prina, Anibal -- Pucheta, Eduardo -- Ramirez, Elizabeth -- Ramirez-Collantes, David A -- Romao, Roberto -- Tighe, Matthew -- Torres, Duilio -- Torres-Diaz, Cristian -- Ungar, Eugene D -- Val, James -- Wamiti, Wanyoike -- Wang, Deli -- Zaady, Eli -- England -- Nature.

Description: In Cuba, the sea cucumber fishery began in 1999 in the Manzanillo area of Granma province, capturing only the species Isostichopus badionotus. Currently, it is caught in the four regions of Cuba (southeast, southwestern, northeastern and northwestern) and the largest volumes of capture are obtained from the southeastern region, in which up to 70 % of the total catch has been reached. Since the beginning of this extractive activity, prospecting cruises have been carried out annually to obtain fishing potentials since, due to the fragile character of this resource, many populations in the world have collapsed because of fishing. This study shows an analysis of the size, weight, density and fishing potential of the species I. badionotus in the Southeast region in the period 2016-2018. 61 % of the individuals captured in the samplings are considered juveniles, since they had sizes smaller than the legal minimum (22 cm). In zone 5, the smallest individuals are found, representing 100% of juveniles in 2018. In general, the sizes and weights show a decrease in time, which may indicate an impact on the population. Densities were obtained between 0,09 pep./100 m2 and 1,51 pep./100 m2. Zone 2 is the most productive when presenting the highest fishing potentials, with maximum values of 2 105 544 sea cucumbers corresponding to 1 304 t wet eviscerated weight.

Description: Gain contribution by stratification in hake (Merluccius hubbsi) biomass estimation with respect to a simple random sampling based on the same sample size is analyzed. Considering as objective hake biomass assessment, curves which relate precision reached in estimations to the sample size are established. Data were from total hake biomass surveys carried out from 1996 through 1999 hake management units distributed North and South of 41°S Argentine Sea are analyzed separately. Stratification used at present allows to obtain very variable gains in precision associated to biomass with estimations, in the North management unit, with a maximun of 88 in 1996 and no gain in 1997. The South management unit presents also variable results but always with important gains. The applied sampling effort levels allow to obtain biomass estimation relative errors no higher than 29 in the assessment corresponding to the North management unit and 14 in the assessment relative to the South management unit. These values may be considered as very satisfactory. In the event of further diminishing estimation errors to obtain minimum gains it will be necessary to increase the sampling effort to levels which are inadmissible from a practical point of view. It does not seem feasible to diminish the present error of biomass estimation in both management units.

Description: To evaluate absolute biomass, a research cruise was conducted on three scallop (Zygochlamys patagonica)beds (38°S-56°W, September 1998). The estimated bed surface was 1,162 nm(2). Sampling stations were regularly spaced at 5 nm intervals. A total of 118 trawls were performed with a non-selective dredge 2,5 m wide (efficiency 16-21. ). Trawls duration and speed were 10 minutes and 3 nm.h(-1)respectively. Samples were taken to estimate total and commercial (greater or equal than 55 mm total height)scallop weight and size frequency distribution. Coefficients of variation (CV)of the estimated biomass were calculated for each bed using geoestatistical techniques and a simple random sampling alternative with the same number of samples. The CVs for total scallop biomass as estimated in the three beds using geostatistical techniques were 50,8. , 20,5. and 5,6. lower than the respective CVs obtained using a simple random design-based alternative. In the case of commercial scallop biomass, the reduction in the CVs was 51,4. , 20,5. and 5,6. , respectively. An important decrease in the associated uncertainty in biomass estimation of the three beds was found using a geoestatistical approach instead of the randomized sampling alternative. Given the spatial distribution and sedentary characteristic of Z. patagonica, once detected, grounds are particularly vulnerable to overfishing. Thus, reliable biomass estimates and precise maps of commercial and non commercial individual densities are useful tools to define sustainable management strategies.
