Notes: An investigation into the wear process of five polymers tested under different contact conditions is presented. Polymer pin on metal plate and metal pin on polymer plate configurations were used. The metal pin on polymer plate configuration gave significantly lower wear rates compared to that observed for the polymer pin on metal plate configuration. The results are discussed in terms of morphology of wear debris generated.

Notes: Results of phenomenological study into the forms of surface failure of poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) are presented. Surface failure of the polymer resulted from rolling contact fatigue produced in a model configuration consisting of a PMMA disc with nominally flat surface loaded against three steel balls able to roll free over the surface of the disc. It was found that the performance of the polymer under the test conditions used is influenced by lubricating medium and the main form of failure is of surface fatigue type. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Description: The 2003 Bam, Iran, earthquake ( M w  = 6.6) was recorded by the BAM accelerometer station. Since the causative fault was located just below the city, the accelerometer recorded the main shock, a foreshock and several local aftershocks. To study the scenario of rupturing, we simulated all components of the observed main shock waveform via the empirical Green's function method. 28 selected aftershocks and the single foreshock are used to simulate the main shock in the frequency range of 0.5–5 Hz. Since the events were very close to the station, some small events may not have similar path effects to the main shock. Therefore, it is essential to employ some appropriate changes to the waveforms to alleviate path difference effects. The starting point of the rupture is identified in the centre of the strong motion generation area and is located approximately 5 km south of the BAM station and in depth of about 7 km. The horizontal simulated components imply that the main shock was located west of the BAM station. In contrast, significant variation in the ratio of amplitudes in EW and NS components may be used to discuss the possibility of dissimilarity in the focal mechanism of the small events. Most aftershocks with similar mechanisms to the main shock, that is similar EW/NS maximum amplitude ratio, have capacity to simulate certain peaks of their horizontal components. However, some small events with different mechanisms are only able to simulate the peaks of up to one horizontal component. Some changes were applied to the empirical Green's function method to incorporate two small events by using a combined fault model. While the two aftershocks have different mechanisms, some combinations may improve simulations. The rupture initiating point at the middle of the fault plane and improved simulations by combination of two fault surfaces with different focal mechanisms may suggest a bilateral rupture and combination of two focal mechanisms for the main shock of the Bam earthquake.

Description: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of partial replacement of dietary fish meal with soybean meal (SBM) on some blood and serum parameters of Beluga (Huso huso) juveniles. Three isonitrogenic and isoenergetic diets, as SBM1 (Soybean meal protein (SBP): Fishmeal Protein (FP) =1:3), SBM2 (SBP: FP = 2: 3) and SBM3 (SBP: FP =1: 1) were fed to triplicate groups of fish. After 8 weeks feeding on the experimental diets, blood parameters were measured. The results revealed that of partial replacement of dietary fish meal with soybean meal had no effect on, leukocyte (WBC) levels, red blood cell counts (RBC), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean cellular hemoglobin (MCH) or mean cell hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) (P〉0.05). However, hemoglobin (Hb) concentration and hematocrit (Hct) values were significantly decreased by increasing dietary soybean meal (P〈0.05). Serum glucose had significantly affected by increasing soybean meal. While total protein, phosphorus or calcium remained unaffected between groups. These results indicated that partial replacement of dietary fish meal with soybean meal could affect on some haematological and biochemical parameters in beluga which should be studied in future.

Description: The quality of the oil extracted from rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) wastes was evaluated using bioactive compounds of the plant thyme (Zataria multiflora). Three treatments were in this research: 1- Samples without extract or essence (control), 2-Samples with concentrations of 600 and 1200 ppm of extract and 3-Samples with concentrations of 600 and 1200 ppm of essence. The oil samples entered in test tubes which rapped in aluminum sheets and incubated in 50° C and analyzed on days 0, 3, 6 and 9. The results showed that chemical analysis of oils extracted from rainbow trout wastes including peroxide and non-enzymatic browning were lowest in 1200ppm of essence on day 9 of storage period while some other quantitative indices including thiobabrbitoric acid, free fatty acids and anisidine value were lowest in 600ppm of extract and essence on day 9. Comparing quantitative parameters in control and other treatments showed that almost all indices were higher in control indicating the antioxidant activity of the extract and essence of the plant they in reducing oxidative spoilage rate and increasing the shelf life of the oils.

Description: To evaluate the dietary toxicity of colloidal silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in rainbow trout, fish were fed with diets containing 0, 20 and 50 mg.kg-1 of AgNPs for 5 weeks and then were fed free nanoparticles diet for a week. During this period, fish growth, as well as silver accumulation and elimination in liver, kidney, gastrointestinal tract and muscle were studied. According to our results, high doses of AgNPs in the fish diet decreased appetite and fish growth. In addition, feeding fish with the diet containing AgNPs (especially at higher doses) increases the accumulation of silver in fish tissues (silver concentration in liver〉 kidney〉 gastrointestinal tract 〉 muscle). Although, a oneweek period considered for elimination of nanoparticles from fish tissues were not enough; however, caused some changes in the accumulation of silver in different organs of the fish. Observed effects due to fish feeding with diets containing silver nanoparticles, suggests that nanoparticle ingestion could affect the fish health. Therefore, preventing the entry of these new materials into the food chain of aquatic organisms seems to be necessary.
