Notizen: The prediction of polymer/polymer miscibility is addressed using analog calorimetry and molecular modeling. For each polymer, an analog compound representing one or two repeat units was chosen. Heat-of-mixing was measured for liquid mixtures of analog compounds and then used in a binary interaction model to predict polymer miscibility. Specifically, we have measured exothermic heats-of-mixing for 4-ethyl phenol, an analog of poly(vinly phenol), with several analogs containing ether, ester, or ketone functional groups. The exothermic heat-of-mixing results are consistent with the observed miscibility of poly(vinyl phenol) with polymers containing these functional groups. Using interaction parametes derived from the analog calorimetry in the binary interaction model or using premixes of 4-ethyl phenol in ethyl benzene, we correctly predict the magnitude and relative order of the fraction of vinyl phenol units in copolymers with styrene required for miscibility with poly(methyl methacrylate), polyacetal, and a polyketone. the miscibility trends for poly(vinyl phenol) blends predicted from analog calorimetry and the binary interaction model are in reasonable agreement with those predicted from the association model of Painter and Coleman, despite the different bases of the two approaches. We have used molecular modeling to complement the analog calorimetry and to assess steric effects on hydrogen-bonding ability for models of poly(n-butyl acrylate) and poly(t-butyl acrylate) with phenol. The modeling results suggest that, in some cases, steric effects and the three-dimensional structure of the polymer can significantly influence the hydrogen-bonding ability of polymers relative to their analogs.

Beschreibung: Among the various candidate materials tested, stainless steel shows the best potential for applications as heat exchanger components in solar ponds. Even stainless steel may lead to pitting type of corrosion. Weight loss measurements are probably unsatisfactory for corrosion evaluation in solar pond situations. Also included are the results from the potentiodynamic anodic polarization analysis, corrosion rate calculation via corrosion behavior diagrams, and immersion weight loss measurements.

Beschreibung: The solar pond research program conducted by the United States Department of Energy was discontinued after 1983. This document summarizes the results of the program, reviews the state of the art, and identifies the remaining outstanding issues. Solar ponds is a generic term but, in the context of this report, the term solar pond refers specifically to saltgradient solar pond. Several small research solar ponds have been built and successfully tested. Procedures for filling the pond, maintaining the gradient, adjusting the zone boundaries, and extracting heat were developed. Theories and models were developed and verified. The major remaining unknowns or issues involve the physical behavior of large ponds; i.e., wind mixing of the surface, lateral range or reach of horizontally injected fluids, ground thermal losses, and gradient zone boundary erosion caused by pumping fluid for heat extraction. These issues cannot be scaled and must be studied in a large outdoor solar pond.

Beschreibung: The design and operation of a salt-gradient solar pond power plant at the Salton Sea presents problems not encountered at small research ponds that were built in the United States. The specific characteristics of the Salton Sea site and the desire to construct the pond using the local clay as a sealant represent major deviations from previous solar pond experience. The site-specific research in support of the plant design is described. The research activity included validation of the spectrophotometric light transmission measurement technique, a search for options for clarifying the turbid and colored water of the Salton Sea, development of water clarification specifications in terms common to industry practice, quantification of gas production from microbiological reactions in the ground, a determination of the combined effects of temperature and salinity on the permeation of the local clays, and a preliminary evaluation of material corrosion.

Beschreibung: Plausible future market scenarios for solar heating and cooling systems into buildings in the area served by the Southern California Edison Company. A range of plausible estimates for the number of solar systems which might be installed and the electrical energy which might be displaced by energy from these systems are provided. The effect on peak electrical load was not explicitly calculated but preliminary conclusions concerning peak load can be inferred from the estimates presented. Two markets are investigated: the single family market and the large power commercial market.

Beschreibung: Five specific California plants with potentially attractive solar applications were identified in a process heat survey. These five plants were visited, process requirements evaluated, and conceptual solar system designs were generated. Four DOE (ERDA) sponsored solar energy system demonstration projects were also reviewed and compared to the design/cost cases included in this report. In four of the five cases investigated, retrofit installations providing significant amounts of thermal energy were found to be feasible. The fifth was rejected because of the condition of the building involved, but the process (soap making) appears to be an attractive potential solar application. Costs, however, tend to be high. Several potential areas for cost reduction were identified including larger collector modules and higher duty cycles.
