    Notes: Abstract Cells of two different cell lines: ccvx (cotyledon derived) and ccvz (hypocotyl derived) of Solanum chrysotrichum were cultivated in 10-l airlift bioreactors for the production of the human antimycotic compound SC-1. When using 3 g l–1 dry weight inoculum in a batch culture, higher levels of biomass were achieved with the ccvx cell line (14.6 g l–1) than with ccvz (7.7 g l–1), resulting in 23 and 12 mg g–1 of SC-1 after 17 days in culture for ccvx and ccvz, respectively. The maximum productivity of SC-1 in bioreactors was 0.025 g l–1 day–1 after 9 days in culture. When using a draw-fill mode, the productivity increased by 60% to a value of 0.041 g l–1 day–1, 4 days after 50% of the cell suspension was removed and replaced with fresh medium. This latter bioreactor system is a feasible alternative for the production of the antimycotic metabolite of S. chrysotrichum on a large scale.

    Notes: Abstract The roles of molybdenum and iron in the enzymes of the assimilatory nitrate-reducing system from Azotobacter chroococcum have been investigated. 1. By adding 99Mo-molybdate to a cell culture of A. chroococcum with nitrate as the nitrogen source, it has been possible to inccrporate the radioactive metal into a purified preparation of the enzyme nitrare reductase. 2. When 185W-tungstate was supplied to a culture medium lacking added molybdate, a 185W-labelled nitrate reductase preparation with negligible activity could be obtained. This in vivo incorporation of tungsten was competitively hindered by molybdenum. 3. The cellular level of nitrite reductase activity gradually increased in response to the addition of increasing amounts of iron to the culture medium. Under the same conditions, the level of nitrate reductase activity was not affected.

    Notes: Abstract. Relativistic corrections to ionization potentials (IPs) and electron affinities (EAs) of atoms with an atomic number Z≤54 are examined based on the first-order perturbation theory with an approximate Schrödinger form of the Dirac-Coulomb-Breit Hamiltonian. Using a Hartree-Fock (HF) wave function from the numerical HF method as the unperturbed function, both the LS-non-splitting and fine-structure corrections are evaluated together with the normal and specific mass corrections. The LS-non-splitting corrections are found to be important for IPs and EAs of transition metal atoms. The fine-structure corrections are generally larger in magnitude than the LS-non-splitting corrections for the atoms of groups 13–18 with Z≥31, and can never be neglected. Comparison of the IPs and EAs presented here and experimental IPs and EAs gives an estimation of the electron correlation correction for these properties. For some light atoms, the estimated values agree with the results directly obtained from correlated calculations.
