    Notizen: Abstract The viscoelastic response of a chopped strand mat E-glass fibre reinforced vinylester resin has been studied over a wide range of applied stress levels. At low applied stress levels, the material exhibited a linear viscoelastic response well represented by Schapery's power law model with constant C and n terms. At higher stresses nonlinear behaviour was observed which apparently is caused by the multiplicity of complex local phenomena associated with and preceding damage development (plastic deformation of the matrix, interfacial slippage, fiber-matrix debonding). The limits of linear viscoelastic behaviour and of damage initiation – about 0.48% strain or 42 MPa – coincide for this material. However, for successful modelisation of uniaxial creep strain in the nonlinear range a modified power law is proposed which uses stress-dependent creep parameters C and n.

    Notizen: A numerical model is developed for the simulation of moving interfaces in viscous incompressible flows. The model is based on the finite element method with a pseudo-concentration technique to track the front. Since a Eulerian approach is chosen, the interface is advected by the flow through a fixed mesh. Therefore, material discontinuity across the interface cannot be described accurately. To remedy this problem, the model has been supplemented with a local mesh adaptation technique. This latter consists in updating the mesh at each time step to the interface position, such that element boundaries lie along the front. It has been implemented for unstructured triangular finite element meshes. The outcome of this technique is that it allows an accurate treatment of material discontinuity across the interface and, if necessary, a modelling of interface phenomena such as surface tension by using specific boundary elements. For illustration, two examples are computed and presented in this paper: the broken dam problem and the Rayleigh-Taylor instability. Good agreement has been obtained in the comparison of the numerical results with theory or available experimental data. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Beschreibung: We report preliminary results of a massive investigation of the striation patterns observed in the dust tail of comet Hale-Bopp in March and April 1997. Our findings are based on 16 wide-field photographs taken with Schmidt cameras on March 2-20, with six more, from March 31-April 8, still waiting for analysis. Altogether approximately 700 individual striae were examined on the 16 images, which were scanned and computer processed to enhance the morphology. About 5300 stria points, or some 7-8 points per stria per image on the average, were measured and their astrometric positions determined and subsequently converted to a Cartesian coordinate system, aligned with the comet's projected radius vector and centered on the nucleus. The evolution of the striated tail has been studied using the Sekanina-Farrell fragmentation hypothesis (AJ 85, 1538, 1980), previously applied to other comets. This two-step model is characterized by the time of release from the nucleus of a parent object (or objects) whose motion is assumed to have been subjected to a constant repulsive acceleration beta(sub p) (presumably due to solar radiation pressure) until the time of fragmentation.
