    Notes: A study on the effects of flow pulsations on interphase mass or heat transfer has been made. The situation corresponds to fully developed flow in a long conduit with a periodic pressure gradient at amplitudes which cause flow pulsations without flow reversal. It is shown that the basic three-parameter formulation can be reduced to a one-parameter problem in the boundary layer formulation. Solutions are developed over wide ranges of the parameters in both the basic and the boundary layer formulations.The boundary approach gives accurate results over wide ranges of the parameters. Pulsations cause increases in the time-averaged interphase flux at intermediate values of a composite frequency-space variable. However, at small values of this variable the pulsations cause a decrease in the flux such that the overall space-averaged flux is always decreased.

    Notes: We review and systematize experimental evidence concerning the extreme high-pressure kinetics of condensed phase nitroalkanes and nitroaromatics. This systematization suggests that enolate aci anions of the nitroalkanes and enolate aci-quinone anions of the nitroaromatics are important in the initial high-pressure kinetics of such systems. Kinetic data from experiments which observed the effect of: (1) small amounts of chemical additives, (2) substitution for protons, (3) difference in chemical isomer, (4) exposure to ultra-violet light, and (5) application of very high pressure can all be rationalized within the framework of our hypothesis. We suggest a static high-pressure ultra-violet absorption spectroscopy experiment on nitromethane that would test the proposed hypothesis.

    Description: The peptide binding cleft of the class I human histocompatibility antigen, HLA-A2, contains conserved amino acid residues clustered in the two ends of the cleft in pockets A and F as well as polymorphic residues. The function of two conserved tyrosines in the A pocket was investigated by mutating them to phenylalanines and of a conserved tyrosine and threonine in the F pocket by mutating them to phenylalanine and valine, respectively. Presentation of influenza virus peptides and of intact virus to cytolytic T lymphocytes (CTLs) was then examined. The magnitude of the reduction seen by the mutation of the two tyrosines in the A pocket suggests that hydrogen bonds involving them have a critical function in the binding of the NH2-terminal NH3+ of the peptide nonamer and possibly of all bound peptide nonamers.     Description: A small molecule called PD 153035 inhibited the epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor tyrosine kinase with a 5-pM inhibition constant. The inhibitor was specific for the EGF receptor tyrosine kinase and inhibited other purified tyrosine kinases only at micromolar or higher concentrations. PD 153035 rapidly suppressed autophosphorylation of the EGF receptor at low nanomolar concentrations in fibroblasts or in human epidermoid carcinoma cells and selectively blocked EGF-mediated cellular processes including mitogenesis, early gene expression, and oncogenic transformation.
