Notes: New three phases composite materials made of glassbeads as filler, water as liquid dispersed phase and polystyrene as matrix were obtained by polymerization of a water in oil emulsion formed by water dispersed in styrene in which glass beads are added. For this purpose glass beads have to be modified by silanization by a coupling agent 3-(Trimethoxysilyl)propylmethacrylate (TPM) or a silane Octadecyltrichlorosilane (ODMS), in order to prevent the wetting of the glass by water. Only low coverage of the glass surface by the coupling agent (0,05% of TPM) are convenient for the preparation cellular materials having good mechanical properties. At higher coverage ratio, strong hydrophobic glass beads are obtained which destabilize the water / styrene emulsion and lead to macroporous products. Study of the rheology of the filled emulsion appears to be the more simple and more sensitive method to determine the level of wettability of the glass bead by the emulsion which is the most significant parameter for the preparation of such three phases composite materials. Composite materials made of glass beads, air and polystyrene are simply obtained by evaporation of water under vacuum.

Description / Table of Contents: The chloromethylated polystyrenes bearing tetrathiafulvalenylcarbonyloxymethyl groups can be oxidized. We have shown that ion radical salts are obtained from these polymers and carbon tetrabromide after irradiation with UV light. Charge transfer complexes were prepared by mixing these polymers and 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyanobenzoquinone. The possible presence of sulfoxides as a result of oxidation of some tetrathiafulvalene units could explain the difficulties we have observed to filter solutions of these polymers.

Notes: Manning's and Scatchard's models for the description of ion-polyelectrolyte interactions are compared in the case of linear polyelectrolytes and bivalent counterions, where “condensation” of the counterions is known to occur for certain concentration ratios of the two species in solution. This comparison leads to the definition of certain conditions on Scatchard's parameters for a precise structural interpretation of Scatchard's plots to be valid. Experimental data obtained with both models are compared and found in good agreement under such conditions.

Notes: A very general approach to the chemical equilibria between many interacting molecules during sedimentation (boundary, band, or active enzyme) taking into account boundary conditions, cell geometry, equilibrium constants, diffusion, enzyme kinetics, etc., is presented. Through a Fortran program, the method has been applied to two very simple but typical cases. With only minor adjustments, the method presented here for sedimentation studies can be extended to all sorts of problems in which “pools” of various species are interacting with each other.

Notes: A conformational quantum-mechanical study of (Gly-Phe-Pro) and (Gly-Pro-Phe) repeating tripeptide sequences has been carried out with the PCILO method. Using appropriate molecules as a model, we investigated the conformational possibilities of each in situ residue. Computations have been done taking into account the two typical pyrrolidine ring puckering and the most favorable orientations of the phenylalanyl side chain. Major conclusions drawn from this study are that the phenylalanyl can be accommodated at both second and third positions in the sequence without preventing the formation of triple-helix conformation. However, the analogy observed between the rotational possibilities around the second residue of Gly-Pro-Pro and Gly-Phe-Pro indicates that phenylalanyl in the second position favors the triple-helix formation.

Description / Table of Contents: The grafting of a liquid acrylic derivative (2-methylenepentane-1,5-dicarboxylic acid diethylester) on the surface of a polyethylene film (HD) was carried out in the presence of benzoylperoxide. The wettability of the surface was investigated with respect to the adhesion properties against aluminium and compared with those of a film of polyethylene grafted in mass with acrylic acid. The mobility of the surface grafted chains may cause the differences in the observed comportment.

Notes: Self-diffusion coefficient measurements have been applied to the study of Na+, Ca++, and Sr++ in the presence of a linear acidic polysaccharide extracted from cartilage, i.e., chondroitin sulfate. A series of experimental determinations was made with and without supporting electrolytes, and an analysis of experiments involving the separation of the electrostatic interaction terms by an extension of Manning's theory produced results showing the preponderant nature of these electrostatic terms. The specificity of each type of ion or the influence of the pH can be considered merely as higher order corrections with respect to the preceding interactions. Counterion concentration ranges and pH ranges were determined, where either the alkaline-earth counterions become free and hence move with their normal diffusion rate, or these cations are associated with the polyelectrolyte molecule, thus giving a diffusion coefficient similar to that of the macromolecule, or the apparent diffusion coefficients vary between these two extreme diffusion rates as a function of the association equilibria. This variation can be expressed as a function of the linear charge density parameter ξ related to the structure of the polyelectrolyte, the value of which was determined and found in good agreement with published values.

Notes: We have studied the electrical conductivity of NaDNA solutions under “saltfree” conditions at temperatures well below the melting point of DNA, using radio-frequency dielectric and noise measurements. A conductivity discontinuity is observed at a temperature well below that at which the usual denaturation processes and trans conformation may commence. The radio-frequency permittivity also exhibits a discontinuity at the same temperature. For the premelting phase, the conductivity versus temperature curves consist of two linear regions with a change in slope occurring at 23°C. This effect is related to the behavior of the ionic sheath covering the DNA macromolecule. The activation energy of the alternative current conductivity as well as that the equivalent noise conductivity results as 3.11 kcal/mole below and 4.08 kcal/mole.
