Notes: Fe—Si alloys and compounds are of strong interest because of their electrical and magnetic properties. In thin layers they can be produced by ion implantation. To form iron-rich alloys Si was implanted at room temperature into iron. Different energies (100, 200, and 300 keV) and ion doses (2 × 1017 to 1 × 1018 cm-2) were applied. The produced layers were investigated by Fe57 conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy (CEMS) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). CEMS was used to study the phases formed due to the ion implantation. Depending on the implantation parameters different disordered (probably amorphous) Fe—Si compounds were detected. Annealing of the samples resulted first in the precipitation of crystalline compounds and then in the beginning of the migration of Si out of the investigated range. The concentration profiles were determined with AES. Gaussian shaped Si profiles were found. Depending on the implantation parameters the maximum Si concentration detected was about 50 at.%.

Notes: Thin layers of iron silicides produced by ion implantation were investigated by 57Fe conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy and Auger electron spectroscopy. The Mössbauer hyperfine parameters were calculated and compared with results obtained at crystalline layers to determine the phases formed. It was found that, depending on the implantation conditions, the phases α- and β-FeSi2, ε-FeSi or mixtures of them are formed. Auger electron spectroscopy was used to analyse the depth distribution of the elements in the layer. The iron concentrations necessary, according to the equilibrium phase diagram, to form the compounds mentioned above were not reached as a result of the implantation. Therefore, the formation of precipitates is concluded. Furthermore, it was found that the Si KLL Auger peak is very sensitive to silicide bonding. Its energy shift can be used as an indicator for silicide formation.

Description / Table of Contents: Phases of the Ternary System Vanadium-Nitrogen-OxygenThe phase relationship in the ternary system V—N—0 has been investigated in the region between “VN”, “VO”, and V2O3 by preparative methods, X-ray phase analysis and measurements of dissociation pressure. From the results a phase diagram has been constructed, “VN” and “VO” form mixed crystals with a miscibility gap between the two phases.

Description / Table of Contents: Since a preparation of pure chromium(II) oxide has not yet been achieved, it was attempted to stabilize CrO in mixed crystals with related metal monoxides. With the oxides VO and CrO - both having the sodium chloride structure -, a homogenous mixed phase in the limits of 0-12 mole % CrO could be obtained. No miscibility could be observed in the oxide systems MnO—CrO and ZnO—CrO. Metal-to-oxygen distances in CrO, as referred to in the literature, have been compared.

Description / Table of Contents: Reinvestigation of the homogeneity range of the cubic vanadium monoxide phase showed that this oxide exhibits two closely related phase sections (VO0.86 to VO0.91,and VO1.05 to VO1.25) divided by a miscibility gap. This largely confirms observations of VOL'F et al.
