    Notes: Abstract Helothermine, a recently isolated toxin from the venom of the Mexican beaded lizard Heloderma horridum horridum was tested on K+ currents of newborn rat cerebellar granule cells. In whole-cell voltageclamp experiments, cerebellar granule neurons exhibited at least two different K+ current components: a first transient component which is similar to an I A-type current, is characterized by fast activating and inactivating kinetics and blocked by 4-aminopyridine; a second component which is characterized by noninactivating kinetics, is blocked by tetraetylammonium ions and resembles the classical delayed-rectifier current. When added to the standard external solution at concentrations ranging between 0.1 and 2 μm helothermine reduced the pharmacologically isolated I A-type current component in a voltage- and dose-dependent way, with a half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 0.52 μm. A comparison between control and nelothermine-modified peak transient currents shows a slowdown of activation and inactivation kinetics. The delayed-rectifier component inhibition was concentration dependent (IC50 = 0.86 μm) but not voltage dependent. No frequency-or use-dependent block was observed on both K+ current types. Perfusing the cells with control solution resulted in quite a complete current recovery. We conclude that helothermine acts with different affinities on two types of K+ current present in central nervous system neurons.

    Notes: The old Kramers' rule is a useful recurrence relation for the calculation of diagonal 〈n, l|rk|n, l〉 matrix elements between hydrogenic wave functions. An improvement to such a relationship, which considers the most general case of nondiagonal 〈n, l|rk|n, l〉 matrix elements, is called Blanchard's rule. Both formulas were obtained by means of a method that uses the Schrödinger equation multiplied by an appropriate function, integral, and differential operators and boundary conditions. In the present work, using an alternative approach based on Hamiltonian identities, a general recurrence relation for the calculation of nondiagonal multipolar matrix elements for any arbitrary central potential wave functions is presented. As expected, Kramers' and Blanchard's equations are obtained as a particular case of the proposed formula for hydrogenic potential wave functions. As a useful application of the improved Blanchard relationship, also presented are the generalized quantum virial theorem and the generalization of the Pasternack-Sternheimer selection rule that consider any central potential which is energy-dependent on the angular momentum. Likewise, the equivalent of Blanchard's rule when applied to the harmonic oscillator and to the Kratzer potential wave functions, respectively, was found. These new recurrence relations reduce to particular cases which are in good agreement with published results which were derived using well-known approaches such as the hypervirial commutator algebra procedure. Finally, the method proposed can also be extended to consider f(r)≠rk matrix elements for any potential wave functions as well as two-center integrals.   © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Notes: The UV - visible (340 - 800 nm) and Raman spectra (10 - 900 cm-1) obtained using various laser exciting radiation of a powder sample of the misfit compound (PbS)1.12 VS2 were investigated. In agreement with x-ray data, vibrational assignments are proposed for most of the internal and external modes of the ‘PBS’ and ‘VS2’ layered sublattices and they were extensively compared with those in the related titanium-containing compound in order to appreciate the interactions due to the ‘PbS’ donor part of the structure. Owing to the incommensurate structure of (PbS)1.12 VS2, new slightly resonance exhanced Raman signals are detected and they can be explained by the k = O, ± q* selection rules (q* is the modulation vector) as in a previous study of (SnS)1.17 NbS2 and (PbS)1.18 TiS2 compounds. These observations are again confirmed by lattice dynamics calculations which reproduce the essential features of the experimental data and allow one to estimate the strength of interlayer interactions.

    Description: Coda-Q estimates for the Granada Basin (Southern Spain) are obtained by analyzing earthquakes occurring within or close to the borders of this area. The data set is composed of 54 earthquakes with local magnitudes ranging between 2.2 and 4.0 and with epicentral distances to the nearest station smaller than 10 km. A single-scattering process is assumed. Coda-Q values obtained show a clear dependence on frequency according to the relationship Q = Qof", where n ranges from 0.81 to 0.89. After removing the main site effects and discussing the possible multiple-scattering influence, the lapse-time dependence is interpreted as due to attenuation variations with depth. This result agrees with the variation of coda Q obtained by using different sets of events with increasing hypocentral depth ranges.

    Description: Intrinsic and scattering attenuation parameters, Q~ and Qs, have been measured in three different tectonic areas for local and shallow earthquakes located close to the receiver. The approach developed by Wennerberg (1993), which takes into account the numerical correction of the coda-Q parameter for the multiple scat- tering formulation of Zeng, was used to infer from the estimates of coda Q and direct S-wave Q the intrinsic (Qi) and scattering (Qs) Q values. Results for 1 to 12 Hz range show that Q~ is comparable to Qs for the Etna volcano and for the Campi Flegrei area, while Qi for the tectonically active area of Granada is lower than Qs. Coda Q is close to intrinsic Q, suggesting that, at least in the crust, coda Q is a good estimate of the intrinsic Q. Volcanic areas show a reasonable higher degree of heterogeneity, if compared with the nonvolcanic area of Granada.

    Description: In the present paper we describe the on-land field operations integrated in the TOMO-ETNA experiment carried out in June-November 2014 at Mt. Etna volcano and surrounding areas. This terrestrial campaign consists in the deployment of 90 short-period portable three-component seismic stations, 17 broadband seismometers and the coordination with 133 permanent seismic station belonging to Italy’s Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV). This temporary seismic network recorded active and passive seismic sources. Active seismic sources were generated by an array of air-guns mounted in the Spanish oceanographic vessel “Sarmiento de Gamboa” with a power capacity of up to 5200 cubic inches. In total more than 26,000 shots were fired and more than 450 local and regional earthquakes were recorded. We describe the whole technical procedure followed to guarantee the success of this complex seismic experiment. We started with the description of the location of the potential safety places to deploy the portable network and the products derived from this search (a large document including full characterization of the sites, owners and indication of how to arrive to them). A full technical description of the seismometers and seismic sources is presented. We show how the portable seismic network was deployed, maintained and recovered in different stages. The large international collaboration of this experiment is reflected in the participation of more than 75 researchers, technicians and students from different institutions and countries in the on-land activities. The main objectives of the experiment were achieved with great success.
