Description: We present the results of multidisciplinary investigations of two significant sites, located in the Acque Albule Basin (AAB), 25 km Northeast of Rome (Italy). This basin has been interpreted as a transtensional structure, lying in the western margin of the Apennine range and affecting the Plio-Pleistocene sedimentary and volcanic sequences. During late Pleistocene times, AAB has been filled in with thermogenic travertine of variable thickness. Since historical time, lithoid travertine has been quarried, becoming the main building material during the Roman period (Lapis Tiburtinus). At present, the mining activity still represents the main economic resource of the region together with thermal baths. After the end of the II World War this area has experienced a strong urbanization and marshy lands were transformed into densely populated areas affected by subsidence and sinkhole phenomena. In order to characterize these environmental hazards from the geophysical and geotechnical point of view, we chose two test sites close to relevant anthropic infrastructures. Site A, located at the southern side of the Guidonia military airport and beside an important road; site B, a few kilometers South-East of site A, lies next to the Regina and Colonnelle Lakes and close to the Roma- Pescara railway. The former feature is a large sinkhole depression, hundreds of meters in width, characterized by ongoing subsidence, whereas the latter consists of two sinkholes actually acting as springs. Both sites lie in proximity of inferred faults, which would affect the AAB in the N-S and NE-SW– directions respectively. The aim of this study is to compare the two cases by collecting geological, geomorphological and geophysical parameters and thus testing the variable controlling their formation and development. We also extended the geophysical campaign in the surrounding area using a multidisciplinary approach to image both surface and subsurface features. We carried out stratigraphic and geomorphological survey, 2 and 3D Geoelectrical Tomography (ERT), differential GPS altimetry, gravity, magnetic, seismic, and soil gas measurements. Moreover, two drillings have been bored inside and outside the depression area of the Site A, reaching depths of 60 and 20 meter, respectively. Geotechnical parameters of the recovered stratigraphy were also measured by laboratory tests. In general, the approach we propose could provide key elements to recognize similar situations in sinkhole prone areas. Moreover, comparative analysis together with the monitoring of the A site can represent useful tools to understand the genesis and dynamics of phenomena and hopefully to forecast their evolution, particularly in the parts of the basin where active movements caused fractures and damages to buildings and infrastructures.

Description: The Plio-Quaternary Acque Albule Basin is already known for the occurrence of sinkholes; since the spring 2014, it has been ongoing the study of an active subsidence process, which formed a depressed area near the Guidonia village. During the last year, the phenomenon has become more intense giving rise to two collapses along the eastern rim of the depression. Thus, geophysical and geogeochemical investigation campaigns started in order to understand the genesis and evolution of the phenomenon. Survey results allowed a geological and structural characterization, showing the presence of “travertino” at the depression margins and its absence therein. It has been recognized, by the geophysics, features with NW-SE and NNE-SSW direction ascribable to a possible depression fracturing and consistent with regional structural trends. Thus, it has been possible to plan and perform geognostic investigation consisting in two drillings aimed to define the stratigraphy of the marginal and inner part of the depression.

Description: Preliminary gravity results are presented in a study carried out in the "Il Laghetto" area and in the surroundings. This area is situated in the NNE of Rome suburb near Via Palombarese among Guidonia town, which is in the east side, Mentana town, which is in the west side and S.Angelo Romano town, which is in the north side. From a morphological point of view "Il Laghetto" area is a subcircular hole, 30 metres deep and 140 metres wide at the top and 120 metres wide at the bottom. In the 30 last years this place has been affected by anthropic buildings. The first gravity data carried out in this place show that Bouguer and Residual anomalies are qualitatively similar, indicating a gravity minimum approximately in the hole’s center. The surrounding area is characterized by two different fluvial trends; one of these is oriented in the N-S side and the other one in the NW-SE side. More specifically, these fluvial trends could indicate a general profile of tectonic structures in this area. At the same time, neither faults nor tectonic structures nor other geologic elements are evident in this place. This is a result of geologic rocks outcrop: Plio-Pleistocene clayes deposits, high-potassium volcanic rocks of the Roman Comagmatic Province (products erupted during the first Tuscolano-Artemisio caldera stage, Middle-Upper Pleistocene) and recent continental deposits. In order to recognize other morphological holes, which should be re-covered by some metres thick recent continental deposits in this area, it has been thought to carry out gravity survey on a particular area situated in the north side of "Il Laghetto" area: the Fosso di Marco Simone.

Description: This paper has the aim to show a geological and structural Meso-Cenozoic carbonatic bedrock below the AAB obtained by 3D gravity model. Subsidence phenomena occurrences along the western edge of the basin only, it is the southern end of Tiberian Gravity Ridge detected in low depth. The distribution of the phenomena of collapse and sulfur springs are recognized along the NNE-SSW, NE-SW and N-S gravity discontinuities where the seismicity of the January 2001 shows the distribution of the areas with higher macroseismic effects.

Description: Systematic analyses of the tectonic structures of the Plio-Pleistocene units and MesoCenozoic deposits of the Acque Albule Basin, 1Okm East of Rome between Mount Soratte, Cornicolani Mts. and Lucretili Mts. in central Italy, show a complex tectonic framework. A gravity survey was carried out to identify the geological and structural features of the basin. Gravity anomalies have been used for the construction of a 3D model of the area, and gravity data for the construction of Bouguer and residual anomaly maps. These data, together with geological surface data, allowed for the understanding of the Plio-quaternary tectonic setting of the basin. The trend of anomalies, around the two relative gravity lows. Here, two relative gravity lows are separated by a wide saddle, located near the Casale Battisti (Guidonia). This plain are characterized by the presence of some collapse phenomena of different types and/or origins. The majority of these collapses are aligned along regional master and seismogenetic faults. Over the last 1O years several collapse phenomena risk area have been detected by micro- gravity survey in Acque Albule plain areas. In this paper only Lago delle Tartare is considered. Both microgravity and seismic tomography data have been proposed in order to better under- stand the underground geological features of the morphological depression.

Description: A new gravity investigation detected a complex geogravity structure called Tiberian Gravity Ridge (TGR) that has a important rule in order to understand the sinkhole genesis in Acque Albule Basin (AAB). Same type of outcropping rocks characterize the Meso-Cenozoic carbonaceous deposit and travertine along the TGR. Sinkhole occurrences show a good correlation with TGR deeper tectonic and structure geometry in the AAB. Genesis sinkhole is due a “deep piping sinkhole” (DPS) and “tectonic sinkhole” (TS) types but it is possible identify a great number of “cave collapse sinkhole” (CaCS) type. In the present time no “cover collapse sinkhole” (CoCS) type is observed yet.
