    Description: Results of a search for extended CO(7-6) line emission in the Orion A molecular cloud using the University of Texas submillimeter laser heterodyne receiver are presented. The large-scale distribution of quiescent CO(7-6) emission is mapped along a cut across the Trapezium cluster extending more than 13 arcmin (nearly 2 pc) in R.A. The receiver, observing method, and calibration techniques are described, and the CO(7-6) spectra and maps are presented. The physical parameters and energetics of the molecular gas are discussed. The findings are compared with observations of other high-luminosity star-forming regions.

    Description: We study the hydrophobic/hydrophilic behavior of carbon nanotubes using molecular dynamics simulations. The energetics of the carbon-water interface are mainly dispersive but in the present study augmented with a carbon quadrupole term acting on the charge sites of the water. The simulations indicate that this contribution is negligible in terms of modifying the structural properties of water at the interface. Simulations of two carbon nanotubes in water display a wetting and drying of the interface between the nanotubes depending on their initial spacing. Thus, initial tube spacings of 7 and 8 A resulted in a drying of the interface whereas spacing of 〉 9 A remain wet during the course of the simulation. Finally, we present a novel particle-particle-particle-mesh algorithm for long range potentials which allows for general (curvilinear) meshes and "black-box" fast solvers by adopting an influence matrix technique.

    Description: Eric Drexler has proposed a hypothetical nanotechnology based on diamond and investigated the properties of such molecular systems. While attractive, diamonoid nanotechnology is not physically accessible with straightforward extensions of current laboratory techniques. We propose a nanotechnology based on functionalized fullerenes and investigate carbon nanotube based gears with teeth added via a benzyne reaction known to occur with C60. The gears are single-walled carbon nanotubes with appended coenzyme groups for teeth. Fullerenes are in widespread laboratory use and can be functionalized in many ways. Companion papers computationally demonstrate the properties of these gears (they appear to work) and the accessibility of the benzyne/nanotube reaction. This paper describes the molecular design techniques and rationale as well as the software that implements these design techniques. The software is a set of persistent C++ objects controlled by TCL command scripts. The c++/tcl interface is automatically generated by a software system called tcl_c++ developed by the author and described here. The objects keep track of different portions of the molecular machinery to allow different simulation techniques and boundary conditions to be applied as appropriate. This capability has been required to demonstrate (computationally) our gear's feasibility. A new distributed software architecture featuring a WWW universal client, CORBA distributed objects, and agent software is under consideration. The software architecture is intended to eventually enable a widely disbursed group to develop complex simulated molecular machines.

    Description: Multi-line studies of CO-12, CO-13, C-18O, HCN, and HCO(+) at 3 mm, 1.3 mm, and 0.8 mm using the Institute for Radio Astronomy in the Millimeter range (IRAM) 30 m telescope, with the IRAM superconductor insulator superconductor (SIS) receivers and the Max Planck Institute for External Physics (MPE) 350 GHz SIS receiver, show that the densities and temperatures of molecular gas in external galaxies change significantly with position. CO-12 measures the densities and temperature of diffuse interclump molecular gas, but not the bulk of the molecular gas. Simple one-component models, with or without external heating, cannot account for the weakness of the CO-12 J = 3 to 2 line relative to J = 2 to 1 and J = 1 to 0. CO-12 does not trace the bulk of the molecular gas, and optical depth effects obviate a straightforward interpretation of CO-12 data. Instead, researchers turned to the optically thin CO isotopes and other molecular species. Isotopic CO lines measure the bulk of the molecular gas, and HCN and HCO(+) pick out denser regions. Researchers find a warm ridge of gas in IC 342 (Eckart et al. 1989), denser gas in the starburst nucleus of IC 342, and a possible hot-spot in NGC 2903. In IC 342, NGC 2146, and NGC 6764, the CO-13 J = 2 to 1 line is subthermally populated, implying gas densities less than or equal to 10(exp 4) cm(-3).

    Description: Researchers observed CO(7-6), CO(3-2), HCN(3-2) and HCO+(3-2) line emission toward the starburst nucleus of M82 and have obtained an upper limit to H13CN(3-2). These are the first observations of the CO(7-6), HCN(3-2) and HCO+(3-2) lines in any extragalactic source. Researchers took the CO(7-6) spectrum in January 1988 at the Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF) with the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics/Univ. of California, Berkeley 800 GHz Heterodyne Receiver. In March 1989 researchers used the Institute for Radio Astronomy in the Millimeter range (IRAM) 30 m telescope to observe the CO(3-2) line with the new MPE 350 GHz Superconductor Insulator Superconductor (SIS) receiver and the HCN(3-2) and HCO+(3-2) lines with the (IRAM) 230 GHz SIS receiver (beam 12" FWHM, Blundell et al. 1988). The observational parameters are summarized.

    Description: Dust reemission from the Scd galaxy NGC 6946 has been measured at 100 and 160 microns with the 32-channel University of Chicago Far-Infrared Camera. Researchers present fully sampled maps of the nucleus and inner spiral arms at 45 seconds resolution. The far-infrared morphology of the galaxy is a bright peak centered on a diffuse disk, where the peak occurs about 24 seconds NE of the Dressel and Condon optical center. The 100/160 micron color temperature is correlated with the H alpha surface brightness. Assuming the distance from Earth to the galaxy is 10.1 Mpc, researchers determine that Tc is 32 K at the nucleus and at radius 5.4 kpc, where there is a concentration of H II regions. In the intermediate annulus of relatively low H alpha surface brightness, the temperature drops to a local minimum of 25 K at radius 3 kpc. The ratio of reradiated to transmitted stellar luminosity is approx. 3.0 at the nucleus and approx. 0.9 for the disk. The optical depth at 100 micron increases from .0005 at the edges of our map to .0035 at the far infrared radiation (FIR) peak. Combining our observations with a fully sampled map of similar spatial extent in CO(1 greater than 0), researchers determine that the ratio F sub IR/I sub CO at the center of the galaxy is almost twice that for the disk, where the value is more or less constant.

    Description: We mapped the distribution of atomic far-IR line emission from (O I) and (C II) over parsec scales in the Galactic star-forming regions L1630, M17, and W3 using the MPE Far-Infrared Fabry-Perot Imaging spectrometer (FIFI) on board the NASA Kuiper Airborne Observatory. The lines mapped include (O I) 63 microns, (O I) 146 microns, and (C II) 158 microns. Comparison of the intensities and ratios of these lines with models of photodissociation regions (e.g., Tielens & Hollenbach 1985, ApJ, 344, 770) allows us to derive temperatures and densities of the primarily neutral atomic gas layers lying on the surfaces of UV-illuminated molecular gas. In general, the (C II) line arises ubiquitously throughout the molecular clouds while the (O I) lines are mainly confined to warm, dense gas (T is greater than 100 K, n is greater than 10(exp 4)/cu cm) near the sites of O and B stars. The distribution of (C II) in the star-forming clouds implies that the (C II) emission arises on the surfaces of molecular clumps throughout the clouds, rather than only at the boundary layer between molecular gas and H II regions.

    Description: We combine beam-matched CO-13, CO-12 J = 3 yields 2 and J = 2 yields 1 line data to infer the molecular gas excitation conditions in the central 500 to 1600 pc diameters of a small sample of infrared-bright external galaxies: NGC253, IC342, M 83, Maffei 2, and NGC6946. Additional observations of the J = 1 yields 0 lines of C-18O and CO-13 set limits on the opacity of the CO-13 J = 1 yields 0 line averaged over the central kiloparsec of these spiral galaxies.

    Description: Reported are 88 GHz aperture synthesis observations of HCN J=1 yields 0 emission and absorption in the central 5 pc of the Galaxy. The data, taken by the Hat Creek mm-interferometer at 5" to 10" spatial and 4 km/s spectral resolution, show a complete, clumpy ring of molecular gas surrounding the ionized central 2 pc of the Galaxy. The ring is the inner edge of a larger disk extending to about 5 pc. Comparison with sub-mm line data suggests that the HCN 1-0 line is slightly optically thick and originates in subthermally populated gas. The clumpy line emission distribution reflects a combination of hydrogen volume and column density variations. The new data clearly show a close physical relation between the molecular and the ionized gas in the central cavity. The western arc appears to be the ionized inner surface of the molecular ring, and the northern arm and bar may be streamers of ionized gas falling from the ring toward the center. The dominant large scale velocity pattern of the majority of the molecular gas in the inner 5 pc is rotation. No overall radial motion of the ring greater than about 20 km/s is apparent. The rotation is perturbed in several ways; (1) there is a very large local velocity dispersion, (2) the ring shows changes in position angle and inclination (warps), (3) there is a bright, redshifted cloud which appears to be located in the western part of the ring but does not participate in the rotation. These characteristics and the high degree of clumpiness indicate a non-equilibrium configuration of short (less than or approx. 10 to the 4th power to 10 to the 5th power y) dynamical lifetime. The warping and tilting of the structure and the short dynamical lifetime make an accurate determination of equilibrium rotation velocity uncertain.

    Description: The minimum scientific spacecraft instrumentation is considered that is likely to result in as complete an understanding of the composition, structure, and activity of a cometary nucleus as is possible without landing on it. The payload will also give useful results on secondary goals of a better understanding of physical processes in the inner and outer coma. Studies of composition, by means of an actual landing on the surface, details of the internal structure of the nucleus, and sample return were considered beyond the scope of this mission.
