Beschreibung: A four-year search for 86-GHz SiO and H2O maser emission towards about 20 unidentified OH/IR objects and about 35 optically identified variable stars has yielded information on the temporal variations of many of these sources. The SiO maser emission is noted to behave differently in OH/IR objects as compared with Mira variables. An attempt is made to explain the appearance of strong masers in both vibrational states solely at the 43 GHz transition, under the assumption that an intrinsically weak pump mechanism generates weak (v=1, J=2-1) emission.

Beschreibung: The C3H radical has been identified in the millimeter-wave spectra of IRC +10216 and TMC-1. In IRC +10216, four rotational transitions have been observed, three in the lower fine-structure ladder (2Pi1/2) and one in the upper (2Pi3/2), each a resolved or partially resolved lambda-doublet. In TMC-1, both lambda components of the lowest lying 3/2-1/2 transition of the 2Pi1/2 ladder have been observed, each with well-resolved hfs. In IRC +10216, the excitation of C3H is similar to that of SiCC: the rotational temperature Trot within the 2Pi1/2 ladder is low (8.5 K), because of rapid radiative decay, while Trot across the ladders is high (about 52 K), because interconnecting far-IR radiative transitions are only weakly permitted. The column density of C3H in IRC +10216 averaged over the estimated source diameter of 84 arcsec is 2.8 x 10 to the 13th/sq cm, an order of magnitude less than that of C2H and C4H.

Beschreibung: Mapping of the CO(1-0) emission from the spiral galaxy was made with the Onsala 20 m antenna. The observations show that the emission is considerably enhanced in spiral arms which appear to originate as intense ridges of emission about 1 kpc from the nucleus. One of the main objectives for the 1986 observations was to study the variations of the tangential velocity component of molecular gas across a spiral arm. The radial velocity was found to have a velocity shift similar to that predicted by the density wave theory. The present (1986) observations of the inner southern spiral arm of M51 show that the tangential velocity component also behaves in a way which conforms with the density wave model. The molecular arms were compared with the H alpha ionized gas arms of Tully (1974) and it was found that the ionized gas appears to have its maximum intensity slightly outside the molecular arm.

Beschreibung: We have searched for HCN J=1-0 line emission in the centers of 12 galaxies and have detected it in 10 of them. We have obtained complementary data on J=1-0 and 2-1 transitions of CO-12 and CO-13 in these systems. The ratio of integrated intensities, I(CO 1-0)/I(HCN 1-0) = 25 +/- 11 for this sample. We find that HCN emission of this strength can be produced under conditions of subthermal excitation. In combination with the line ratios in CO and CO-13, HCN puts constraints on the mean conditions of molecular clouds and on the mix of cloud types within the projected beam.

Beschreibung: A Josephson effect heterodyne mixer for the millimeter wave band was investigated employing high-T(c) GdBaCuO point contacts. Mixer performance was in qualitative agreement with theory. A mixing response was observed up to 55 K, the highest operating temperature achieved for such a device to date. The voltage separation of RF-induced steps gave a value of h/2e = 2.08 x 10 to the -15th V s, which is in excellent agreement with the value expected for Cooper pairs. In addition, the temperature dependence of the I(0)R product was found to agree with Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory in the weak coupling limit.

Beschreibung: Spectral scans of Orion A and the envelope of IRC + 10216, obtained with resolution 1 MHz over the complete range from 72.2 to 91.1 GHz using the radome-enclosed 20-m mm-wave telescope at Onsala Space Observatory during 1979-1982, are presented graphically (as main-beam brightness temperature in 500-MHz bands), providing the data basis is for the discussion of Johansson et al. (1984). Observing parameters include main-beam efficiency 0.58, aperture efficiency 0.44, FHPBW 47 arcsec, and total-system noise temperature 300-500 K.

Beschreibung: The spectra of the Orion KL molecular cloud and the envelope of the carbon star IRC+10216 are surveyed at 1 MHz resolution over the interval 72.2-91.1 GHz to a sensitivity usually better than 0.1 K. Multitransition analysis of several molecular species is presented which gives information on the physical conditions and chemical abundance in the Orion KL region. The excitation conditions and relative abundances in the IRC+10216 envelope are surveyed. It is stressed that the low detection rate of molecular lines in this object does not necessarily imply a poorer chemistry compared with that in interstellar clouds, but is partly a reflection of low abundances and unsatisfied excitation requirements.

Beschreibung: Column densities of 10 to the 15th/sq cm toward the Galactic center and not more than 10 to the 12th/sq cm for cold dark clouds are derived from observations using an LVG model, and the chemical implications are discussed. The HOCO(+) 4(04)-3(03) line toward Sgr A is mapped. The fractional abundance of HOCO(+) in the Galactic center region was found to be three orders of magnitude larger than predicted by quiescent ion-molecule chemistry and an order of magnitude larger than predicted by an MHD shock model. It is suggested that the possibly high CO2 abundance, and consequently the observed HOCO(+) abundance in the Galactic center, may result from UV photolysis of grain mantles.
