Notes: Abstract The annual occurrence of hypoxia (〈25% oxygen saturation) in the bottom waters along the Swedish west coast coincides with the postlarval settlement of Norway lobster, Nephrops norvegicus (L.). This study investigates behaviour and the experimental effects of low oxygen concentrations in juvenile N. norvegicus of different ages. All experimental individuals were reared to the juvenile (postlarval) stage in the laboratory and then given sediment as a substratum. Behavioural responses to low oxygen concentrations were tested in early and late Postlarvae 1 exposed to normoxia (〉80% oxygen saturation, pO2 〉 16.7 kPa), moderate hypoxia (30% oxygen saturation, pO2 = 6.3 kPa) and hypoxia (25% oxygen saturation, pO2 = 5.2 kPa). The experiments were run for a maximum period of 24 h or until individuals died. Behaviour was studied using sequential video recordings of four behavioural activities: digging, walking, inactivity or flight (escape swimming up into the water column). Behaviour and mortality changed with lowered oxygen concentrations; energetically costly activities (such as walking) were reduced, and activity in general declined. In normoxia, juveniles initially walked and then burrowed, but when exposed to hypoxia they were mainly inactive with occasional outbursts of escape swimming. To increase oxygen availability the juveniles were observed to raise their bodies on stilted legs (similar to adults in hypoxic conditions), but oxygen saturations of 25% were lethal within 24 h. The results suggest that the main gas exchanges of early postlarval stages occur over the general body surface. Burrowing behaviour was tested in Postlarvae 1 and 2 of different ages held in 〉80% oxygen saturation for 1 wk. The difference in time taken to complete a V-shaped depression or a U-shaped burrow was measured. The results showed a strong negative relationship between postlarval age and burrowing time, but all individuals made a burrow. Juveniles were more sensitive to hypoxia than adults. Thus, the possible consequences of episodic hypoxia for the recruitment of Nephrops norvegicus and for the recolonization of severely affected areas are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The present paper is based on a 3-year field study of marine Cladocera in the waters off Gothenburg on the Swedish west coast. The group mainly occurred from May to September, when there was a temperature stratification of the waters. The dominant species, Evadne nordmanni Lovén, may occur in large numbers during the entire warm period, both in offshore and inshore waters. The species Podon leuckarti G.O. Sars, P. intermedius Lilljeborg, and Pleopis (=Podon) polyphemoides (Leuckart) occurred separately both in time and space. The occurrence of different species may primarily be regulated by abiotic factors, e.g. temperature and currents, but may also be modified by competition for food between closely related species. During the early summer, the populations of E. nordmanni and Podon leuckarti seem to be comprised of specimens brought in by the sea, while the estuarine species Pleopis polyphemoides seems to be more indigenous within the area.

Notes: Summary Ten patients (mean age 53 years; range 37–65 years) with hypertension refractory to standard triple treatment were selected for measurement of blood pressure and echocardiographic evaluation of the left ventricular dimensions before and after 3, 6 and 12 months of captopril therapy. In each patient the dose of captopril was titrated to a maximum of 150 mg t.d.s. (range 25 to 150 mg t.d.s.) with a therapeutic goal of ≤90 mmHg diastolic blood pressure. Most patients had added diuretic therapy. Four patients were unable to complete the study, two because of insufficient response to captopril therapy, and two because of side-effects (skin rash and cough). A significant fall in blood pressure was seen after three months of treatment and a reduced blood pressure was still maintained after 12 months. Over the same period, the average number of drugs was reduced from 3.6 to 2.1 per patient. A gradual reduction of septal and posterior wall thickness were noted, from 12.8 and 11.5 mm to 10.0 and 8.5 mm, respectively, after 12 months. Calculated left ventricular muscle mass was insignificantly reduced from 281 to 243 g after 12 months. The present study suggests that in hypertension resistant to conventional multiple therapy, captopril can reduce the blood pressure, and, in the long run it can also induce reversal of left ventricular wall thickening without causing deterioration of left ventricular function.

Notes: Abstract A series of potassium titanyl phosphate crystals, KTiOPO4, with various concentrations of niobium dopant has been grown, and some of their physical properties and structural characteristics have been studied. The incorporation of a small amount of niobium results in considerable changes in the electrical conductivity of KTP: Nb crystals and the temperature of the ferroelectric phase transition. Thus, the presence of 3–4 at. % of niobium results in an increase of conductivity by more than an order of magnitude, whereas T C decreases from 930 to 620°C. The X-ray diffraction study of the crystals has been performed at room temperature; the neutron diffraction analysis was made at temperatures of 20, 330, and 730°C. It was revealed that two crystallographically independent positions are statistically (by 90%) occupied by potassium cations, which results in the concentration of potassium atoms in the structure higher than it was expected from the condition of preservation of crystal electroneutrality. At high niobium concentrations, the monoclinic compound of the composition K2TiNb2P2O3 is formed.
