Notizen: Removal of the pungent factor, allyl isothiocyanate, will partly determine whether mustard seed can become a commerical source for oil and meal in the United States. In processing studies at the Northern Laboratory, the mustard glucoside was converted enzymatically and the pungent oil was removed. This process has now been extended to pilot-plant scale by using filtration-extraction equipment at the Southern Laboratory. After desolventization and further steam stripping, the extracted meal had a residual content of 2.9% crude fat and 0.004% allyl isothiocyanate.

Notizen: The mechanical anisotropy of oriented PVDF sheet is examined using a variety of experimental techniques. The mechanical behavior is similar to that observed previously for low-density polyethylene and nylon and consistent with a parallel lamellar crystalline structure. The s31 compliance is reduced in magnitude by drawing to higher draw ratio, but the reduction in the piezoelectric coefficient d31 is less marked, suggesting that the piezoelectric response cannot be related solely to dimensional changes under stress. Drawing to high draw ratio increases the s33 compliance, and this is further increased by introducing voids. The corresponding d33 piezoelectric coefficient is not changed significantly by drawing to high draw ratio, or by the introduction of voids, again indicating that the piezoelectric behavior relates to factors other than dimensional changes.

    Beschreibung: Arising from M. A. Nowak, C. E. Tarnita & E. O. Wilson 466, 1057-1062 (2010); Nowak et al. reply. Nowak et al. argue that inclusive fitness theory has been of little value in explaining the natural world, and that it has led to negligible progress in explaining the evolution of eusociality. However, we believe that their arguments are based upon a misunderstanding of evolutionary theory and a misrepresentation of the empirical literature. We will focus our comments on three general issues.〈br /〉〈br /〉〈a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3836173/" target="_blank"〉〈img src="https://static.pubmed.gov/portal/portal3rc.fcgi/4089621/img/3977009" border="0"〉〈/a〉   〈a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3836173/" target="_blank"〉This paper as free author manuscript - peer-reviewed and accepted for publication〈/a〉〈br /〉〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Abbot, Patrick -- Abe, Jun -- Alcock, John -- Alizon, Samuel -- Alpedrinha, Joao A C -- Andersson, Malte -- Andre, Jean-Baptiste -- van Baalen, Minus -- Balloux, Francois -- Balshine, Sigal -- Barton, Nick -- Beukeboom, Leo W -- Biernaskie, Jay M -- Bilde, Trine -- Borgia, Gerald -- Breed, Michael -- Brown, Sam -- Bshary, Redouan -- Buckling, Angus -- Burley, Nancy T -- Burton-Chellew, Max N -- Cant, Michael A -- Chapuisat, Michel -- Charnov, Eric L -- Clutton-Brock, Tim -- Cockburn, Andrew -- Cole, Blaine J -- Colegrave, Nick -- Cosmides, Leda -- Couzin, Iain D -- Coyne, Jerry A -- Creel, Scott -- Crespi, Bernard -- Curry, Robert L -- Dall, Sasha R X -- Day, Troy -- Dickinson, Janis L -- Dugatkin, Lee Alan -- El Mouden, Claire -- Emlen, Stephen T -- Evans, Jay -- Ferriere, Regis -- Field, Jeremy -- Foitzik, Susanne -- Foster, Kevin -- Foster, William A -- Fox, Charles W -- Gadau, Juergen -- Gandon, Sylvain -- Gardner, Andy -- Gardner, Michael G -- Getty, Thomas -- Goodisman, Michael A D -- Grafen, Alan -- Grosberg, Rick -- Grozinger, Christina M -- Gouyon, Pierre-Henri -- Gwynne, Darryl -- Harvey, Paul H -- Hatchwell, Ben J -- Heinze, Jurgen -- Helantera, Heikki -- Helms, Ken R -- Hill, Kim -- Jiricny, Natalie -- Johnstone, Rufus A -- Kacelnik, Alex -- Kiers, E Toby -- Kokko, Hanna -- Komdeur, Jan -- Korb, Judith -- Kronauer, Daniel -- Kummerli, Rolf -- Lehmann, Laurent -- Linksvayer, Timothy A -- Lion, Sebastien -- Lyon, Bruce -- Marshall, James A R -- McElreath, Richard -- Michalakis, Yannis -- Michod, Richard E -- Mock, Douglas -- Monnin, Thibaud -- Montgomerie, Robert -- Moore, Allen J -- Mueller, Ulrich G -- Noe, Ronald -- Okasha, Samir -- Pamilo, Pekka -- Parker, Geoff A -- Pedersen, Jes S -- Pen, Ido -- Pfennig, David -- Queller, David C -- Rankin, Daniel J -- Reece, Sarah E -- Reeve, Hudson K -- Reuter, Max -- Roberts, Gilbert -- Robson, Simon K A -- Roze, Denis -- Rousset, Francois -- Rueppell, Olav -- Sachs, Joel L -- Santorelli, Lorenzo -- Schmid-Hempel, Paul -- Schwarz, Michael P -- Scott-Phillips, Tom -- Shellmann-Sherman, Janet -- Sherman, Paul W -- Shuker, David M -- Smith, Jeff -- Spagna, Joseph C -- Strassmann, Beverly -- Suarez, Andrew V -- Sundstrom, Liselotte -- Taborsky, Michael -- Taylor, Peter -- Thompson, Graham -- Tooby, John -- Tsutsui, Neil D -- Tsuji, Kazuki -- Turillazzi, Stefano -- Ubeda, Francisco -- Vargo, Edward L -- Voelkl, Bernard -- Wenseleers, Tom -- West, Stuart A -- West-Eberhard, Mary Jane -- Westneat, David F -- Wiernasz, Diane C -- Wild, Geoff -- Wrangham, Richard -- Young, Andrew J -- Zeh, David W -- Zeh, Jeanne A -- Zink, Andrew -- BB/H022716/1/Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council/United Kingdom -- England -- Nature. 2011 Mar 24;471(7339):E1-4; author reply E9-10. doi: 10.1038/nature09831.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21430721" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Notizen: Microcalorimetric heat capacity measurements on dilute and concentrated solutions and films of poly[d(A-T)·d(A-T)] in 2 M sodium chloride have been carried out. Values for enthalpy, entropy, and temperature of the helix-coil transition have been found to depend on the polymer concentration, and to have maxima near 20% (w/w) of polymer. The results are discussed in terms of polynucleotide hydration as one of the structure stabilizing factors.

Notizen: The preceding paper develops the theory for the interpretation of fluorescence photobleaching recovery (FPR) measurements of multiple binding of a ligand to a multivalent substrate molecule. Based on a reasonable assumption about the mechanism of the photobleaching process, this analysis shows that the observed behavior of a multivalent system should be practically identical to that of a univalent binding system. This is in contrast to the expected and observed behavior of fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) measurments. Experimental FPR measurements of multivalent binding of ethidium bromide to DNA confirm these conclusions. The FCS and FPR measurements also reveal an apparently enhanced diffusion of ethidium at high DNA concentration. This enhancement might result from direct transfer of ethidium among DNA molecules.

Notizen: The effect of Cryogenically Ground Rubber (CGR) from old tires on some mechanical properties of an unsaturated polyester resin is presented. A delay in the free radical cure reaction of the unsaturated polyester resin was observed upon the addition of ground rubber. This delay in the cure reaction could be overcome with the further addition of the free radical initiator. The particle size, surface chemistry, and the chemical composition of the rubber had an effect on the cure and on the final properties of the rubber-filled composites. It was also found that the rubber particles decreased the tensile, flexural, and storage shear modulus of the unsaturated polyester. Composites made from silane-treated ground rubber showed better mechanical properties than composites made from untreated CGR. Finally, the particle size of the ground rubber was apparently too large to produce a toughening effect on the filled materials.

Notizen: Some features of the behaviour of polymer materials under the conditions of plastic flow and uniaxial stretch are discussed. A combined action of high pressure and shear deformation leads to a drastic change of the physicochemical properties of solid polymer materials caused by the formation of a large free surface in the substance. In consequence, plastic flow of polymer materials may give rise, depending on the conditions of the experiment, either to monoliths with a more homogeneous structure or to highly disperse powders. An anomalous decrease of the deformability of some thermoplasts during uniaxial stretching has been observed in the premelting range; the decrease is caused by the nonhomogeneity of the structure of the material as a result of the enrichment of its amorphous disordered zones with low-molecular fractions.

Notizen: Amorphous unoriented poly(ethylene terephthalate) was crystallized at 25°C by various organic liquids. The crystalliznity induced in the amorphous polymer was measured by differential scanning calorimetry and infrared spectroscopy. The ability of liquids to interact with and induced crystallinity in the amorphous polymer was classified on the basis of their solubility parameters. Measurements of the density of liquid-crystallized 0.8-mil films of poly(ethylene terephthalate) indicated the presence of extensive internal voids in the semicrystalline polymer matrix. Comparison of differential scanning calorimetric thermograms and infared spectra of heat-crystalized and liquid-crystallized polymer indicated significant differences in the polymer morphologies induced by the two crystallization processes.
