    Notes: Self-chemical ionization Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectra are reported for bases, nucleosides, and alkylated and exocyclic adducts of bases and nucleosides. The technique always produces a protonated molecular ion and in the majority of cases this is a single, intense peak. Analysis of a base mixture and a nucleoside mixture demonstrates the technique as an excellent method to identify the constituent compounds qualitatively. The high resolution capabilities and tandem mass spectrometric techniques (msn) in FT-ICR are discussed with respect to developing the technique as a future method to identify and characterize nucleic acid constituents, specifically adducts.

    Notes: The ions produced by 252Cf plasma desorption are detected by Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance techniques. Results for CsI and N,N,N-trimethyl-p-aminophenolate iodide show the feasibility of the technique with high resolution (up to 11 000 at m/z 23) and good signal-to-noise ratio (up to 726).

    Notes: The 1,2-azaphosphinine, 9, and the 1,3-diphosphinine, 10, can be isolated from a mixture resulting from the reaction of 1,1,3,3-tetrakis(dimethylamino)-1λ5,3λ5-diphosphete, 1, and ethyl isothiocyanate. The reaction of 1 with phenyl isothiocyanate yields the 1,2-azaphosphinine, 16. Mechanisms for the formation of the compounds 9, 10, and 16 are suggested. The properties, the NMR, mass, and IR spectra, and the molecular and crystal structures of 9 and 10 are described and discussed.

    Notes: Oligonucleotide analogs, in which carbamate rather than phosphodiester linkages form the backbone, have been analyzed by negative ion fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry. These oligodeoxynucleotides, dimers (982.4 daltons) to 11-mers (4356.5 daltons), show intense [M - H]- ions and some degree of cleavage of the sugarcarbamate backbone structure in repeating fashion on both sides of the carbonyl groups. Sequencing of the shorter chain oligonucleotide analogs, up to six bases long, is demonstrated by complete 3′ and 5′ terminal sequence fragment ions. Longer chain oligomers show partial sequencing information.

    Notes: Underivatized short-chain polysaccharides such as two inulins from different plants containing up to 35-40 monosaccharide units with molecular weights of up to 6500 Da and dextran T 1.5 containing up to 16-20 monosaccharide units with molecular weights of up to 3200 Da have been investigated by direct chemical lionization. Under soft ionization conditions such as ammonia chemical ionization and reduced ion-source temperature, it was possible to obtain spectra of the native polysaccharides showing dominant ion series corresponding to ammonia adduct ions of oligosaccharides, and also ion series corresponding to ammonia adduct ions of anhydro-oligosaccharides.

    Notes: The application of differential thermogravimetric analysis (DTGA) to the study of polymerization mechanisms is illustrated using as examples the radical polymerization of di-n-alkyl itaconates and methyl methacrylate (MMA). Five poly(di-n-alkyl itaconates) were prepared in bulk, both in the presence and absence of n-dodecyl mercaptan and in solution using AIBN as initiator. The poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was photoinitiated using colloidal CdS as a photosensitizer. The thermal properties of the resulting polymers are described in terms of the proposed polymerization mechanisms. The advantages and disadvantages of DTGA for the identification of thermally weak structures are discussed. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: The modeling equations formulated for a catalytic packed-bed reactor with distributed resistance to flow have been applied to the alumina catalyzed isomerization of 1-butene to cis- and trans-2-butene. Flow maldistribution was deliberately created in a 5.25 cm I.D. reactor by packing different radial sections with alumina particles of different size. Effluent gas composition, monitored by gas chromatography, was found to vary with radial position in a manner consistent with the modeling equations and with the reaction rate constant previously established in a microreactor.

    Notes: The chemical engineer frequently has to correlate kinetic data for heterogeneous reactions simply and accurately in order to make useful predictions of reaction rates over a range of conditions. The Langmuir-Hinshelwood approach, which is frequently used for this purpose, does not have the theoretical validity commonly attributed to it, and its use leads to unnecessary mathematical complexity. A simpler method of analysis is suggested which is based on power dependencies of the rate on concetrations, the powers being restricted to integral of half-integral values. The data for several reactions are shown to be adquately correlated by the suggested procedure, which is simple and convenient.

    Notes: A new analysis is presented for the extraction of Arrhenius parameters from experimental measurements of ignition temperatures during catalytic oxidation over electrically-heated metal wires. Butane oxidation on high purity platinum wires has yielded reproducible experimental results for the reaction rate and has provided consistent estimates of the Arrhenius parameters. First-order kinetics was assumed. The present treatment contains explicit consideration of: (1) the ohmic heating term; and (2) the end conduction heat loss from the catalytic wire. The effects of wire length, diameter, and configuration are reconciled when the ignition phenomenon is refferred to the center-point temperature of the wire.
