    Notes: Summary We give sufficient conditions for the existence of positive solutions to some semilinear elliptic equations in unbounded Lipschitz domainsD ⊂ ℝ d (d≥3), having compact boundary, with nonlinear Neumann boundary conditions on the boundary ofD. For this we use an implicit probabilistic representation, Schauder's fixed point theorem, and a recently proved Sobolev inequality forW 1,2(D). Special cases include equations arising from the study of pattern formation in various models in mathematical biology and from problems in geometry concerning the conformal deformation of metrics.

    Notes: Summary This work is concerned with the existence and uniqueness of a class of semimartingale reflecting Brownian motions which live in the non-negative orthant of ℝ d . Loosely speaking, such a process has a semimartingale decomposition such that in the interior of the orthant the process behaves like a Brownian motion with a constant drift and covariance matrix, and at each of the (d-1)-dimensional faces that form the boundary of the orthant, the bounded variation part of the process increases in a given direction (constant for any particular face) so as to confine the process to the orthant. For historical reasons, this “pushing” at the boundary is called instantaneous reflection. In 1988, Reiman and Williams proved that a necessary condition for the existence of such a semimartingale reflecting Brownian motion (SRBM) is that the reflection matrix formed by the directions of reflection be completely-L. In this work we prove that condition is sufficient for the existence of an SRBM and that the SRBM is unique in law. It follows from the uniqueness that an SRBM defines a strong Markov process. Our results have potential application to the study of diffusions arising as approximations tomulti-class queueing networks.

    Notes: The reaction-induced phase separation in a blend of a commercial polysulfone (PSu) with diepoxide-cyclic anhydride monomers, was studied. The diepoxide was based on diglycidylether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) and the hardener was methyl tetrahydrophthalic anhydride (MTHPA), used in stoichiometric proportion. Benzyldimethylamine (BDMA) was used as initiator. PSu had no influence on the polymerization kinetics, the gel conversion, and the overall heat of reaction per epoxy equivalent. A kinetic model including initiation, propagation, and termination steps was used to estimate the distribution of linear and branched species in the first stages of the chain-wise copolymerization. This distribution, together with the PSu distribution, were taken into account in a thermodynamic model of the blend. The interaction parameter was fitted from experimental determinations of conversions at the start of phase separation, obtained under different conditions. The thermodynamic model was used to explain the complex morphologies developed in materials containing different PSu concentrations as well as their dynamic mechanical response. The shift in glass transition temperatures was explained by the fractionation of different species during the phase separation process. Phase inversion produced a significant decrease of the elastic modulus in the glassy state and a thermoplastic-like behavior of the material in the rubbery region. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Notes: Curing novolac with hexamethylenetetramine in closed molds at T = 190°C was studied. Cured products were examined with the following experimental techniques: sol fraction determination, % N fixed in sol and gel fractions, and IR spectra. The fraction of fixed N decreased from 1 to 0.5 when the hexa mass fraction was increased from 0 to 0.3 in the mixture with novolacs. A segregation of the fixed N in the sol fraction was observed. Azomethine derivatives were present, their amounts increasing with the hexa mass fraction. Curing was described by a reaction scheme similar to the one derived from studies with model phenols. A simplified scheme was adequate for the prediction of the minimum hexa amount necessary to gel the system at full conversion.

    Description: A technical description of the design and analysis of the Earth Pointing Safe Hold mode (EPSHM) for the Ocean Topography Experiment (TOPEX) satellite is presented. The EPSHM serves as the primary hardwired analog backup controller for safe-haven satellite operations in the event of on-orbit anomalies. The EPSHM is a modified version of the baseline Multimission Modular Satellite (MMS) EPSHM used on the Landsat-4 mission. Modifications to the MMS baseline EPSHM used on Landsat-4 were required to satisfy the unique TOPEX operational requirements. One such TOPEX operational requirement is that the EPSHM provide a spacecraft yaw-axis slewing capability to maintain adequate illumination of the solar array. The EPSHM architecture, constituent hardware components, performance requirements and predicted on-orbit performance are described.

    Description: The augmented Modular Attitude Control Subsystem (MACS) is described, with emphasis on the significant hardware modifications that have been incorporated into the Landsat MMS (Multimission Modular Spacecraft) MACS design to satisfy the Topex/Poseidon mission attitude control and determination requirements. Particular attention is given to a modification consisting in the addition of an earth pointing safe hold mode utilizing yaw coarse sun sensors to provide a yaw-slew capability for maintaining adequate illumination of the solar array. The design utility of this augmented MACS module for future spacecraft applications is pointed out.
