    Notes: Abstract The vacuum-UV-photoelectron spectra (hν=10.0 eV or 8.3 eV) of selenium- and tellurium-clusters of different sizes (up to Se25 and Te8) were measured in a molecular beam by a photoion-photoelectron-coincidence experiment. Especially, the photoelectron spectra (4p-π-electrons) of the selenium-clusters converge with growing cluster size to the well known spectra of amorphous solid selenium by taking into account the dielectric constant of the bulk material. The experimental results indicate the first evidence that larger selenium aggregates are van der Waals clusters of the molecules Se5, Se6, Se7 and Se8 which are contained in the equilibrium vapour.

    Notes: Abstract The vacuum-UV-photoelectron spectra (hν=10.0 eV) of Se2, Se5, Se6, Se7 and Se8 were measured. The isolated particles were examined in a supersonic molecular beam employing the photoelectron-photocation-coincidence technique. The structures of the photoelectron spectra of selenium molecules with even and odd numbers of atoms differ in a characteristic manner. Whereas the spectra of Se6 and Se8 show one single broad band, three separated bands with different intensities are observed for Se5 and two for Se7. An attempt to connect these experimental observations with the geometrical structure of the molecules shows that the photoelectron spectra are consistent with theC 1h -symmetry of the Se5 and Se7 rings proposed in the literature.

    Description: In this paper we report the first observation in the Southern hemisphere of an energy dependence in the Galactic cosmic ray anisotropy up to a few hundred TeV. This measurement was performed using cosmic ray induced muons recorded by the partially deployed IceCube observatory between May 2009 and May 2010. The data include a total of 33 x 10(exp 9) muon events with a median angular resolution of approx. 3 degrees. A sky map of the relative intensity in arrival direction over the Southern celestial sky is presented for cosmic ray median energies of 20 and 400 TeV. The same large-scale anisotropy observed at median energies around 20 TeV is not present at 400 TeV. Instead, the high energy skymap shows a different anisotropy structure including a deficit with a post-trial significance of -6.3 sigma. This anisotropy reveals a new feature of the Galactic cosmic ray distribution, which must be incorporated into theories of the origin and propagation of cosmic rays.

    Description: The giant radio galaxy M87 with its proximity (16 Mpc), famous jet, and very massive black hole ((3-6) X 10(exp 9) Solar Mass) provides a unique opportunity to investigate the origin of very high energy (VHE; E〉100 GeV) gamma-ray emission generated in relativistic outflows and the surroundings of super-massive black holes. M87 has been established as a VHE gamma -ray emitter since 2006. The VHE gamma -ray emission displays strong variability on timescales as short as a day. In this paper, results from a joint VHE monitoring campaign on M87 by the MAGIC and VERITAS instruments in 2010 are reported. During the campaign, a flare at VHE was detected. triggering further observations at VHE (H.E.S.S.), X-rays (Chandra), and radio (43 GHz VLBA). The excellent sampling of the VHE gamma-ray light curve enables one to derive a precise temporal characterization of the flare: the single, isolated flare is well described by a two-sided exponential function with significantly different flux rise and decay times of rise tau ((sup rise sub d) = (1:69 +/- 0:30) days and tau(sup decay sub d = (0:611 +/- 0:080) days, respectively. While the overall variability pattern of the 2010 flare appears somewhat different from that of previous VHE flares in 2005 and 2008, they share very similar timescales (approx day), peak fluxes (Phi (sub 〉 0:35 TeV) approx. equals (1 - 3) X 10(exp -11) ph / square cm/s), and VHE spectra. 43 GHz VLBA radio observations of the inner jet regions indicate no enhanced flux in 2010 in contrast to observations in 2008, where an increase of the radio flux of the innermost core regions coincided with a VHE flare. On the other hand, Chandra X-ray observations taken approx 3 days after the peak of the VHE gamma -ray emission reveal an enhanced flux from the core (flux increased by factor approx 2; variability timescale 〈 2 days). The long-term (2001-2010) multi-wavelength (MWL) light curve of M87, spanning from radio to VHE and including data from HST, LT, VLA and EVN, is used to further investigate the origin of the VHE gamma -ray emission. No unique, common MWL signature of the three VHE flares has been identified. In the outer kpc jet region, in particular in HST-1, no enhanced MWL activity was detected in 2008 and 2010, disfavoring it as the origin of the VHE flares during these years. Shortly after two of the three flares (2008 and 2010), the X-ray core was observed to be at a higher flux level than its characteristic range (determined from more than 60 monitoring observations: 2002-2009). In 2005, the strong flux dominance of HST-1 could have suppressed the detection of such a feature. Published models for VHE gamma -ray emission from M87 are reviewed in the light of the new data.

    Description: This paper presents four searches for flaring sources of neutrinos using the IceCube neutrino telescope. For the first time, a search is performed over the entire parameter space of energy, direction, and time with sensitivity to neutrino flares lasting between 20 micro-s and a year duration from astrophysical sources. Searches that integrate over time are less sensitive to flares because they are affected by a larger background of atmospheric neutrinos and muons that can be reduced by the use of additional timing information. Flaring sources considered here, such as active galactic nuclei, soft gamma-ray repeaters, and gamma-ray bursts, are promising candidate neutrino emitters. Two searches are "untriggered" in the sense that they look for any possible flare in the entire sky and from a predefined catalog of sources from which photon flares have been recorded. The other two searches are triggered by multi-wavelength information on flares from blazars and from a soft gamma-ray repeater. One triggered search uses lightcurves from Fermi-LAT which provides continuous monitoring. A second triggered search uses information where the flux states have been measured only for short periods of time near the flares. The untriggered searches use data taken by 40 strings of IceCube between 2008 April 5 and 2009 May 20. The triggered searches also use data taken by the 22-string configuration of IceCube operating between 2007 May 31 and 2008 April 5. The results from all four searches are compatible with a fluctuation of the background.

    Description: As part of its earthquake information service, GFZ Potsdam has started to provide seismic moment tensor solutions for significant earthquakes world-wide. The software used to compute the moment tensors is a GFZ-Potsdam in-house development, which uses the framework of the software SeisComP 3 (Hanka et al., 2010). SeisComP 3 (SC3) is a software package for seismological data acquisition, archival, quality control and analysis. SC3 is developed by GFZ Potsdam with significant contributions from its user community. The moment tensor inversion technique uses a combination of several wave types, time windows and frequency bands depending on magnitude and station distance. Wave types include body, surface and mantle waves as well as the so-called 'W-Phase' (Kanamori and Rivera, 2008). The inversion is currently performed in the time domain only. An iterative centroid search can be performed independently both horizontally and in depth. Moment tensors are currently computed in a semi-automatic fashion. This involves inversions that are performed automatically in near-real time, followed by analyst review prior to publication. The automatic results are quite often good enough to be published without further improvements, sometimes in less than 30 minutes from origin time. In those cases where a manual interaction is still required, the automatic inversion usually does a good job at pre-selecting those traces that are the most relevant for the inversion, keeping the work required for the analyst at a minimum. Our published moment tensors are generally in good agreement with those published by the Global Centroid-Moment-Tensor (GCMT) project for earthquakes above a magnitude of about Mw 5. Additionally we provide solutions for smaller earthquakes above about Mw 4 in Europe, which are normally not analyzed by the GCMT project. We find that for earthquakes above Mw 6, the most robust automatic inversions can usually be obtained using the W-Phase time window.
