Description: This study focuses on clay smear processes during fault gouge evolution in sand-clay sequences at depths up to 2 km. A clay-rich fault gouge can dramatically lower the fault’s permeability, and prediction of this process is therefore relevant in groundwater modelling and hydrocarbon geology (Fulljames et al. 1997, Yielding et al 1997, van der Zee et al. 2003, 2005). We constructed an ‘underwater’ sandbox to deform layered sand-clay models of 20 × 40 × 20 cm above a 70°-dipping rigid basement fault. The experiments are run completely watersaturated to allow deformation of wet clay and cohesionless sand. The basement fault moves at 20 to 120mmh−1 to a maximum offset of 60 mm. We use quartz sand with grain size between 0.1 to 0.4mm and an illite-rich clay with a water content between 28 and 55 wt.%. Water content of the clay is used to control its shear strength and state of consolidation...

Description: This dataset contains oxygen and carbon isotope data of the shells of A. benedeni benedeni specimens SG-126 and SG-127, as well as two in-house standards (Naxos, Kiel-carbonate). These measurements were carried out in order to establish a sclerochronological record of year-by-year shell growth. The bivalve shells were collected in 2013 from a shell bed at the top of the Oorderen Member of the Lillo Formation of the Pliocene in Belgium. The collection site was a construction-related temporary outcrop at the Deurganck Dock Lock (now Kieldrecht Lock) in the city of Antwerp, located at 51°16′44″N 4°14′52″E. Oxygen and carbon stable isotopes were measured in spring 2021 at the department of Earth Sciences at Utrecht University, the Netherlands, on a Thermo Scientific GasBench II gas preparation system coupled to a Thermo Scientific MAT 253 isotope ratio mass spectrometer and using a LIDI workflow. The dataset includes raw data and corrected values, and final values are reported relative to the Vienna Pee-Dee Belemnite (VPDB) standard.

Description: This dataset contains carbonate clumped isotope data of the shells of A. benedeni benedeni specimens SG-126 and SG-127 as well as used standards (ETH1, ETH2, ETH3, Merck, IAEA-C2). These measurements were carried out in order to reconstruct a palaeo mean annual temperature from these shells, using the temperature calibration of Meinicke et al. (2020, 2021). Clumped isotopes were measured in spring 2021 at the department of Earth Sciences at Utrecht University, the Netherlands, on a Kiel IV carbonate device coupled to a Thermo Scientific MAT 253 Plus isotope ratio mass spectrometer and using a LIDI workflow, following the protocol of Meckler et al. (2014). The dataset includes raw data and corrected values, and final values are reported in accordance with the I-CDES90 reference frame of Bernasconi et al. (2021). Associated oxygen and carbon isotopes are reported relative to the Vienna Pee-Dee Belemnite (VPDB) standard.
