Notes: Abstract Rotational temperatures are determined by measuring the absorption of infrared laser radiation. The possibilities of this method are critically examined and tested. As a result the molecular density in the expansion could be determined, too. Color-center laser radiation has been absorbed by a molecular jet of NH3. An anomalous line shape has been observed, related to a Doppler shift from molecules moving along the various streamlines. No deviations from a thermal rotational distribution have been observed.

Notes: Abstract Infrared laser absorption by a planar molecular jet is studied. The absorption lineshape is narrowed by a factor of 2 to 3, as compared to the absorption lineshape in bulk gas. The infrared absorption of CO2 clusters is observed directly in a jet. The formation of clusters in the jet is monitored for different mixtures and distances from the nozzle.

Notes: Abstract Three ν2 vibration-inversion transitions of NH3-Ar have been found with linewidths smaller than 2 MHz, yielding a minimum predissociation lifetime of 80 ns. While one of these lines was previously identified as a low frequency inversion doublet transition, the other two lines belong to the high frequency component of the ν2 vibration-inversion doublet.

Notes: Abstract The infrared dissociation spectra of several halogenated methanes (CHCl2F, CH3F, CF3I and CF3Br) have been studied. Bonded and free C–F stretch excitations have been observed.H-bridges forming the bonding in CHCl2F or CH3F dimers lead to very large red-shifts in the dissociation spectrum with respect to the gas-phase absorptions. Double resonance techniques have been employed to study the homogeneity of the spectral features.

Notes: Abstract The narrow lines on top of the broad homogeneous background of the (C2H4)2 predissociation spectrum are studied. The high resolution spectra are measured tuning the length of a CO2 waveguide laser by means of a PZT yielding a frequency scan of 230 MHz around the CO2 laser lines. In the absense of power broadening a minimum non-instrumental linewidth of 3.5 MHz fwhm is found, corresponding to a lower limit for the predissociation lifetime of 45 ns. From the power broadening of the strongest sharp line a transition dipole moment of 0.14 Debye has been determined. To this transition corresponds a saturation fluenceF sat=3 µJ/cm2, in strong contrast withF sat=20 mJ/cm2 for the broad background. The dependence of the ratio structure/background on the concentration of C2H4 in He, on the source temperature and on the stagnation pressure, yields insight in the origin of the co-existence of the broad background and the narrow lines. Evidence is found that the sharp lines are due to dimers with low internal energies, whereas the background originates mainly from dimers with higher internal energy. By means of a two-laser experiment it is shown that the sharp peaks are inhomogeneous. Moreover, the first laser can significantly diminish the background predissociation signal produced by the second laser without consequences for the height of the sharp peaks.
