Notes: Abstract The results of the theory of chromatography are described using the mass balance model without entering into the details of mathematical treatment. The equation of the elution function describing the concentration in the column effluent as function of time is discussed with special emphasis on the theoretical plate height. The choice of the experimental parameters is discussed by means of the equation for the resolution of two components. Especially the optimation with respect to the time of separation and the dilution occurring at the separation is dealt with.

Notes: Abstract Coherences among asymmetry-split rotational levels in a molecule can be created when a weak electric field is applied. The quantum beats superimposed on the time-resolved fluorescence decay are utilized for the accurate measurement of asymmetry splittings. The technique is exemplified for selected vibronicS 1 states of propynal and αD-propynal and the results are compared with conventional (i.e. frequency domain) spectroscopic data. The applicability of the presented method of coherence spectroscopy is discussed.

Notes: Abstract A new method is presented for the detection and manipulation of magnetic sublevel coherences in excited molecular states. A radio-frequency field induces coherences between a set of molecular levels which were excited by a short optical pulse. The time evolution of the coherences is directly monitored in the modulated fluorescence decay by quantum beat detection. The system can be brought into particular superposition states with radio-frequency pulses of selected lengths and amplitudes. The method is demonstrated for a Zeeman splitJ=1 state in the electronically excited3 A 2 triplet of the12CS2 molecule. The interpretation and analysis of the experimental results based on the theoretical description have been further elucidated and corroborated by computer simulations. The presented method extends the quantum beat technique and is applicable for labelling of transitions and determination of molecular parameters in complex level structures such as hyperfine structures.

Notes: Abstract We derive analytical expressions for Stark quantum beat signals of polyatomic molecules and discuss them with regard to molecular and geometrical parameters. The general treatment is specified for near prolate asymmetric rotor molecules and a method for determining rotational constants and all components of the dipole moment of electronically excited polyatomic molecules is presented. The method is tested and illustrated for the vibrationlessS 1 state of deuterated propynal (HC ≡ CCDO,C s symmetry) and its lowest frequency non-totally symmetric state 121. The results of the vibrationless state are compared with structural data reported in the literature. For the 121 state we obtainA=1.5004(43) cm−1,B=0.16131(34) cm−1,C=0.14623(34) cm−1, and the components of the electric dipole moment in the molecular plane μ a =−0.88(2)D, μ b =1.03(2)D. Furthermore, it is shown that the modulation depth of Stark quantum beat signals can be utilized to quantify the contribution of the individual components of the transition moment to the total emission.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary In the analytical application of column-liquid chromatography the batchwise collection of effluent must be applied if the analytical measurements cannot be carried out in the effluent stream of the chromatographic column. In high pressure liquid chromatography a component may be eluted in a few seconds in a volume of less than hundred microliter. The design of an automatic fraction collector which meets these requirements is described. The batchwise collection of fractions of the column effluent is discussed with respect to fraction volume and additional mixing effects. The application was demonstrated in off-line identification by mass spectrometry, quantitative trace analysis using off-line detection and trace analysis by discontinuous recycling.
