Description / Table of Contents: Riassunto Sono state investigate le forme di riga di transizioni del neon mediante la spettroscopia optogalvanica in intermodulazione.
Notes: Summary We have investigated sub-Doppler lineshapes of neon transitions by means of intermodulated optogalvanic technique in a direct current hollow cathode and a radio frequency glow discharge. The intermodulated Doppler-free signal, as usual, is superimposed on a broad Gaussian background due to velocity-changing collisions. The ratio between the collisional and the homogeneous signal has been systematically investigated as a function of gas pressure and discharge current. By detecting neon as a trace in other buffer gases, the lineshapes have been also carefully investigated as a function of the mass of the perturbers (helium and argon). Comparison between theoretical predictions and experimental data leads to quantitative evaluations of collisional parameters.

Notes: Summary We report the design criteria and performance characteristics of a hollow-cathode tube developed especially for high-resolution Doppler-free laser spectroscopy. It is simple to construct and is easily demountable. Narrow homogeneous line widths of refractory and highly reactive-element transitions have been observed by applying intermodulated detection scheme.

Notes: Abstract The hyperfine structure of the3He 1s 3p 3 P state and the3He-4He isotope shift is determined by high precision measurements of the 1s2s 3 S 1-1s 3p 3 p 3 P J transition frequencies near 389 nm. A direct frequency measurement is made without the need for wavelength calibration by tuning a single laser to the atomic frequency, and using a novel heterodyne method to observe beat frequencies with a stable reference laser. A fit to a theoretical model of hyperfine structure is used to determine the hyperfine shifts. Additional off-diagonal mixing effects are investigated to resolve a possible systematic discrepancy in the hyperfine intervals. The final isotope shift without hyperfine structure of 42184308±165 kHz is used to deduce an rms nuclear charge radius for3He of 1.956±0.042 fm. This is in good agreement with other values obtained from atomic isotope shift measurements, and a recent theoretical value of 1.958±0.006 fm. The present result helps to resolve substantial differences in the3He nuclear radius derived from electron-nuclear scattering measurements, and it provides a significant test of the nuclear three-body problem.

Notes: Abstract Using high-resolution saturation spectroscopy, by means of both double heterostructure and multiple quantum-well AlGaAs diode lasers, we investigate the isotope shifts and the hyperfine structure in the 3s-3p transitions of the triplet and quintet systems of atomic oxygen. From the analysis of the signals from17O we can deduce precise values for the hyperfine structure magnetic dipole constants. A theoretical analysis allows us to bring into evidence core polarization effects in the hyperfine structure. By heterodyning two frequency locked lasers, we perform a direct frequency measurement of the isotope effect on the3 S 1→3 P 1,2,0 transitions. From the comparison with similar accuracy data on the corresponding quintet transitions, an upper bound to the size of the nuclear volume effect is given, and precise values for the specific mass contributions are consequently obtained.

Notes: Abstract The lifetime of the metastable 3D3/2 and 3D5/2 states of Ca+ ions is determined in a r.f. ion trap by laser excitation of this levels and subsequent time delayed probing of the state population by a second laser. In a buffer gas atmosphere of about 10−5−10−6 mbar of He we observe quenching to the ground state and strong finestructure mixing of the two D-states. This mixing allowes only the determination of the combined lifetime. Our result of τ(3D)=1.24(39) s is in good agreement with theoretical calculations.

Description: The frequency of the 170.6-micron CW CH3OH optically pumped laser emission has been remeasured at different pressures without observing the pressure shift observed by Lawandy and Koepf (1980). The far-infrared frequency was synthesized with two stabilized CO2 lasers. No measurable pressure shift over the operating pressure range of the laser was observed, and the frequency was confirmed to be 1 757 526.3 MHz. However, competing lasing lines were found to produce spurious effects on the frequency. These effects may explain the apparent shifts.

Description: High-accuracy absorption spectroscopy of CH3OH in the far infrared is discussed. In addition to 22 transitions in the ground state, the frequency of the (n, tau, J, K), (0, 1, 16, 8) to (0, 2, 15, 7) transition in the nu5 excited vibrational level, which is responsible for the laser emission at 119 microns, was measured. The measured frequency is 2,522,782.57(10) MHz at zero pressure, with a pressure shift of 6.1(32) kHz/Pa (0.805/420/ MHz/torr). An accurate remeasurement of the laser emission frequency has also been performed, and the results are in good agreement.

Description: The first experimental observations of sub-Doppler linewidths in a cell made using tunable far-infrared radiation are reported. A double-resonance scheme has been used, combining CO2-laser infrared radiation with tunable far-infrared radiation to observe a sub-Doppler line shape in an excited vibrational state of CH3OH.
