Notes: Abstract Soot-blower operation leads to thermal-cyclic-oxidation conditions of heat-resistant steels in conventional power stations. The consequence may be failure of the protective oxide scales and increased corrosive attack. The behavior of protective oxide scales on 12Cr-1Mo steel was investigated under isothermal conditions at 650°C and under thermal cycling conditions between 650 and 300°C (200°C). The tests were performed in air, air + 0.5%SO2, simulating the fire side, and Ar-5% H2-50% H2O, simulating the steam side. Complete heat-exchanger tubes were used as specimens. The main instrument for the detection of scale failure was acoustic-emission analysis. In air and air + 0.5% SO2 the M2O3 scales with M = Fe, Cr were very thin and did not show significant failure either during isothermal or during cyclic oxidation. The thicker scales formed in Ar-5% H2-50% H2O, consisting of several partial layers, failed even during isothermal oxidation due to geometrically-induced growth stresses in the scale. Thus, in the thermal-cycling cooling periods there was only very little additional scale cracking. The scale behavior can be explained consistently by applying the existing quantitative models.

Description / Table of Contents: A PC Program for Determination of the Acceptability of Defects in Components of Chemical ApparatusesThe paper describes development and features of a PC program for the assessment of defects in components. The program based on approximate methods of linear elastic and elastic plastic fracture mechanics has several accuracy and effort levels and does not require special fracture mechanics expertise. A collection of material data is attached to the program.

Description / Table of Contents: Creep Rupture Data of TitaniumIn a joint investigation program of the Dechema Committee “Werkstoffe und Konstruktion im Chemie-Apparatebau” creep rupture data of titanium Ti1 (DIN materials no. 3.7025) and titanium Ti2 (DIN materials no. 3.7035) were measured in the temperature region of 20 to 300 °C and for periods of up to 50 000 hrs, allowing reliable extrapolation to 100 000 hrs values. The results of these investigations are presented together with earlier results on titanium Ti3 (DIN materials no. 3.7055). The data shown enable the assessment of the behaviour of titanium components even for long service times.

Notes: A computer programme is described which simulates the cracking and healing processes in protective oxide scales on heat-resistant alloys under tensile straining at high temperatures. The main aim of the programme has been to calculate the critical strain rates for the maintenance of the protective effect of oxide scales after cracking by healing. The results from simulation calculations using input data for 3 heat-resistant steels investigated earlier are compared to experimental results for these materials. The comparison reveals good agreement between calculated and experimental data concerning the critical strain rates for the maintenance of the protective effect by crack healing. The programme, thus, offers a tool for the theoretical estimation of critical strain rates when knowing some necessary mechanical data of the scale and the oxidation rate constant.
