Notes: Abstract This paper is concerned with two mixed plate-bending elements with shear strain interpolations, a quadrilateral element and an 8-node serendipity-type element based on discussions on the element proposed in Ref.[1]. The shear strains and inner-forces in the natural coordinates are interpolated in an element and then transformed into Cartesian coordinates in accordance with covariant and contravariant tensor transformations, respectively. The quadrilateral element coincides with the element in Ref.[1] when it is rectangular. Numerical examples show that the two new elements are free from shear locking and spurious kinematic modes under regular and irregular meshes and have the advantages of being insensitive to element distortion and able to give fairly accurate results.

Notes: Abstract In this paper a generalized variational principle with two-field variables is derived from the Reissner principle of elasticity in the curvilinear coordinates of a revolution shell, based on which, a new kind of mixed elements with independent transverse rotations is formulated for revolution shells subjected to harmonic external loads. The resultant-stress interpolations are carefully selected so that the shear part of the element stiffness contains the Kirchhoff hypothesis for thin shells and element stiffness matrices have correct ranks. The elements are free from shear locking and spurious kinematic modes. Numerical examples show that the new elements have good generality and high accuracy for thin and moderately-thick revolution shells.

Notes: Abstract The stochastic finite element method (SFEM) based on the local, averages of random fields, which was proposed in [5], is now generalized to analyze the structures with several correlated random parameters. The covariance matrix of the local averages of a random vector field is derived. The SFEM based on the local averages of random vector fields is formulated. The numerical examples show that the generalized SFEM preserves the advantages of the original one, i. e., rapid convergence, good accuracy and insensitivity to the correlation structures of random parameters.

Description: During the breakup of continents in magmatic settings, the extension of the rift valley is commonly assumed to initially occur by border faulting and progressively migrate in space and time toward the spreading axis. Magmatic processes near the rift flanks are commonly ignored. We present phase velocity maps of the crust and uppermost mantle of the conjugate margins of the southern Red Sea (Afar and Yemen) using ambient noise tomography to constrain crustal modification during breakup. Our images show that the low seismic velocities characterize not only the upper crust beneath the axial volcanic systems but also both upper and lower crust beneath the rift flanks where ongoing volcanism and hydrothermal activity occur at the surface. Magmatic modification of the crust beneath rift flanks likely occurs for a protracted period of time during the breakup process and may persist through to early seafloor spreading.
