    Description: Here we report results from a multidisciplinary field campaign at Villarrica volcano, Chile, in March 2009. A range of direct sampling and remote sensing techniqueswas employed to assess gas and aerosol emissions from the volcano, and extend the time series of measurements that have been made during recent years. Airborne traverses beneath the plume with an ultraviolet spectrometer yielded an average SO2 flux of 3.7 kg s−1. This value is similar to previous measurements made at Villarrica during periods of quiescent activity. The composition of the plume was measured at the crater rim using electrochemical sensors and, for the first time, open-path Fourier transforminfrared spectroscopy, yielding a composition of 90.5 mol% H2O, 5.7% CO2, 2.6%SO2, 0.9% HCl, 0.3% HF and b0.01% H2S. Comparison with previous gas measurements made between 2000 and 2004 shows a correlation between increased SO2/HCl ratios and periods of increased activity. Base-treated filter packs were also employed during our campaign, yielding molar ratios of HBr/SO2=1.1×10−4, HI/SO2=1.4×10−5 and HNO3/SO2=1.1×10−3 in the gas phase. Our data represent the most comprehensive gas inventory at Villarrica to date, and the first evaluation of HBr and HI emissions from a South American volcano. Sun photometry of the plume showed the near-source aerosol size distributions were bimodal with maxima at b0.1 and ~1 μm. These findings are consistent with results from analyses in 2003. Electron microscope analysis of particulatematter collected on filters showed an abundance of sphericalmicron-sized particles that are rich in Si, Mg and Al. Non-spherical, S-rich particles were also observed.

    Description: The major technical tasks that led to the definitions of operational and demonstration multiple beam antenna (MBA) flight systems and a proof of concept model (POC) are described. Features of the POC Model and its measured performance are presented in detail. Similar MBA's are proposed for transmitting and receiving with the POC Model representing the 20 GHz transmitting antenna. This POC MBA is a dual shaped-surface reflector system utilizing a movable free array to simulate complete CONUS coverage. The beam forming network utilizes ferrite components for switching from one beam to another. Measured results for components, subsystems and the complete MBA confirm the feasibility of the approach and also show excellent correlation with calculated values.

    Description: Additional frequency bands are needed to satisfy requirements related to the rapid growth of satellite communications, and the utilization of the 30/20 GHz frequencies is being considered. The present investigation is concerned with the experimental verification phase of an antenna technology study sponsored by NASA. The feasibility of narrow (0.3 degree) directive beam scanning over the entire continental U.S. (CONUS) from a single antenna at 30/20 GHz is demonstrated. The POC (Proof-of-Concept) model is based on an employment of an offset shaped dual reflector optics. The main reflector and the subreflector are both fabricated from aluminum. Attention is given to feed array and beam-forming network, multiple beam antenna range tests, an analysis, and test results.

    Description: A full scale 20 GHz antenna model was designed, fabricated and tested. The model is intended to test the low sidelobe beam scanning capability of a new class of an offset dual reflector and feed array configuration. The offset main reflector and subreflector surfaces are custom shaped by a computer synthesis procedure. The derived optics result in beam scan loss under 1 db over the + or - 12.3 beamwidths by + or - 5.8 beamwidths scan volume while maintaining low sidelobes. It is found that the measured and computed patterns are in good agreement.
