Description: Preface to Journal of Atmospheric and Solar-Terrestrial Physics 67 (2005)
Description: At the beginning of the new millennium, ionospheric physics and its application in new technologies are at a point of significant change and new development. Ionospheric studies in the past found application in the traditional areas of broadcast and terrestrial radio communications. It has become clear, in recent years, that an understanding of the ionosphere, as a part of the upper atmosphere, is central to the design of many modern communication, navigation and positioning systems. An important additional role has also been recognized in the areas of space weather science and services. This issue of the Journal of Atmospheric and Solar-Terrestrial Physics collects selected contributions presented at the Solar-Terrestrial Sciences session ST14 on "Space weather and RF communications: monitoring and modelling" held during the first General Assembly of the European Geosciences Union (Nice, France, 25–30 April 2004).

Description: At the end of August 2007 an Advanced Ionospheric Sounder (AIS), built at the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV), Rome, Italy, was installed at San Miguel de Tucumán, Argentina (geographical coordinates: 26.9 S, 294.6 E; magnetic coordinates: 15.5 S, 3.8 E), particularly interesting for its location, near the southern peak of the equatorial anomaly. AIS-INGV is a digital low-power pulse-compressed ionosonde. In order to reduce the transmitted power, weight, size, power consumption, and to have an excellent reliability, advanced HF-radar techniques were employed. The ionosonde is also equipped with Autoscala, a software able to perform an automatic scaling of the ionogram.

Description: The increasing demand for upper-atmosphere nowcasting services for operational applications reveals the need for a realistic mapping of the ionosphere over Europe in real-time and especially during storm periods. To meet this need, a real-time updating method of simplified ionospheric regional model (SIRM) with autoscaled ionospheric characteristics observed by four European Digital Portable Sounders (DPS) ionosondes was recently developed. SIRM belongs to the group of ionospheric models for the standard vertical incidence (VI) ionospheric characteristics such as the critical frequency of the ionospheric F2 layer foF2 and the propagation factor M(3000)F2, which oversimplify a number of the ionospheric phenomena of real significance for radio communications applications showing satisfactory performance for median ionospheric condition description in restricted area of mid-latitudes. As a step forward, the rapid conversion of real-time data from four European digisondes to the driving parameters of the SIRM was introduced as the real-time SIRM updating (SIRMUP). In SIRMUP approach, the values of the ionospheric characteristics from first-guess model parameters at measurement points are combined with real-time measurements. The reliability of the real-time SIRM update method has already been tested in terms of the foF2 for various ionospheric conditions and the simulation results were very promising. In this paper, the simulation tests are continued in order to investigate the efficiency of the SIRMUP method in mapping the propagation conditions over Europe as they are expressed by the propagation factor M(3000)F2. In general, the results demonstrate that SIRMUP procedure has the potential to be used in real time for nowcasting the standard ionospheric characteristics over Europe, for operational applications.

Description: The main objective of DIAS (European Digital Upper Atmosphere Server) project is to develop a pan-European digital data collection on the state of the upper atmosphere, based on real-time information and historical data collections provided by most operating ionospheric stations in Europe. A DIAS system will distribute information required by various groups of users for the specification of upper atmospheric conditions over Europe suitable for nowcasting and forecasting purposes. The successful operation of the DIAS system will lead to the development of new European added-value products and services, to the effective use of observational data in operational applications and consequently to the expansion of the relevant European market.

Description: The study of foF2 data measured every 5-min and of TEC measurements made every 10-min shows that the within-the-hour variability is different in the two parameters. Deciles of this variability for foF2 and for TEC are determined together with the probabilities of exceeding a given level of variability. Furthermore, considering hourly values, it is found that the variability in TEC is like an «intrinsic noise» throughout the day of the order of less than 5% of the hourly value; but at sunrise and often at sunset large values take place. A seasonal dependence is evident. Besides, a within-the-hour variability in foF2 is always present with large values at sunrise or sunset depending on the season, and also during disturbed ionospheric conditions.

Description: The joint utilization of autoscaled data such as the F2 peak critical frequency foF2, the propagation factor M(3000)F2 and the electron density profile, coming from two reference ionospheric stations (Rome and Gibilmanna), the regional (SIRMUP) and global (IRI) ionospheric models, can provide a valid tool for obtaining a real-time three-dimensional (3-D) electron density mapping of the ionosphere. Preliminary results of the proposed 3-D model are shown by comparing the vertical electron density profiles given by the model with the ones measured at three testing ionospheric stations (Athens, Roquetes and S.Vito). Mostly at the solar terminator the vertical electron density profile extracted from the proposed 3-D model is more representative of the real conditions of the ionosphere than the electron density profile extracted from the IRI-URSI model. Additional tests are planned for geomagnetically disturbed periods, considering more than two reference ionospheric stations, and by using a new oblique-incidence ionospheric sounding campaign between Rome (41.8° N, 12.5°E) and Chania, Greece (35.7°N, 24.0°E), in order to compare the results from radio path measurements with those obtained by the ray tracing technique applied to the real-time 3D pictures of the ionosphere specified by the new developed tool.

Description: The paper describes a new simple method of calculation by which an artificial ionogram trace is obtained from a given vertical electron density profile. The method is discussed in terms of the target function method used by Autoscala to output a reliable estimation of the real vertical electron density profile associated to the recorded ionogram. This new approach solves the issue of the pole in the calculation of virtual height, and consequently eliminates all the divergence phenomena that sometimes characterized the artificial ionogram traces computed by Autoscala. In contrast to the POLAN procedure, the technique introduced in this paper to pass from true to virtual heights is not based on any arithmetical operation related to changes of integration variables. Since the target function method on which Autoscala is based requires that the passage from a vertical electron density profile to an artificial ionogram be repeated a very large number of times, this new calculation procedure is advantageous in terms of speeding up the associated processing time.

Description: The present paper proposes to discuss the ionospheric absorption, assuming a quasi-flat layered ionospheric medium, with small horizontal gradients. A recent complex eikonal model [Settimi et al., 2013b] is applied, useful to calculate the absorption due to the ionospheric D-layer, which can be approximately characterized by a linearized analytical profile of complex refractive index, covering a short range of heights between h1= 50 km and h2= 90 km. Moreover, Settimi et al. [2013c] have already compared the complex eikonal model for the D-layer with the analytical Chapman’s profile of ionospheric electron density; the corresponding absorption coefficient is more accurate than Rawer’s theory [1976] in the range of middle critical frequencies. Finally, in this paper, the simple complex eikonal equations, in quasi-longitudinal (QL) approximation, for calculating the non-deviative absorption coefficient due to the propagation across the D-layer are encoded into a so called COMPLEIK (COMPLex EIKonal) subroutine of the IONORT (IONOspheric Ray-Tracing) program [Azzarone et al., 2012]. The IONORT program, which simulates the three-dimensional (3-D) ray-tracing for high frequencies (HF) waves in the ionosphere, runs on the assimilative ISP (IRI-SIRMUP-P) discrete model over the Mediterranean area [Pezzopane et al., 2011]. As main outcome of the paper, the simple COMPLEIK algorithm is compared to the more elaborate semi-empirical ICEPAC formula [Stewart, undated], which refers to various phenomenological parameters such as the critical frequency of E-layer. COMPLEIK is reliable just like the ICEPAC, with the advantage of being implemented more directly. Indeed, the complex eikonal model depends just on some parameters of the electron density profile, which are numerically calculable, such as the maximum height.

Description: The paper reviews the work done in the course of the COST 271 Action concerned with the development of tools and methods for forecasting, nowcasting and warning of ionospheric propagation conditions. Three broad categories of work are covered. First, the maintenance and enhancement of existing operational services that provide forecast or nowcast data products to end users; brief descriptions of RWC Warsaw and the STIF service are given. Second, the development of prototype or experimental services; descriptions are given of a multi-datasource system for reconstruction of electron density profiles, and a new technique using real-time IMF data to forecast ionospheric storms. The third category is the most wide-ranging, and deals with work that has presented new or improved tools or methods that future operational forecasting or nowcasting system will rely on. This work covers two areas - methods for updating models with prompt data, and improvements in modelling or our understanding of various ionospheric-magnetospheric features - and ranges over updating models of ionospheric characteristics and electron density, modelling geomagnetic storms, describing the spatial evolution of the mid-latitude trough, and validating a recently-proposed technique for deriving TEC from ionosonde observations.

Description: This article introduces the concept of ionospheric waves with periods from about 15 min to about 4 h as one of the acoustic-gravity wave-induced phenomena. The existence of these medium-period ionospheric waves in the various ionospheric layers is supported by the results of a data analysis which has shown remarkable characteristics in occurrence and direction of the waves with a period not longer than about 2 h. The explanation offered is based on the assumption that a unique phenomenon capable to launch acoustic-gravity waves related to such ionospheric waves is the sudden change in physical conditions of the atmosphere due to the passage of the solar terminator.
