Beschreibung: Ozone mixing ratios in the vicinity of the 525-K potential temperature surface in January and early February of 1990 were observed to decrease sharply across the edge of the vortex boundary, where the vortex position was estimated from Ertel's potential vorticity. The changes in NO(y) mixing ratio with respect to altitude measured on January 18 and 31 were quite well correlated with those of ozone between 15 and 24 km, indicating that NO(y) also had a large gradient across the edge of the vortex. This is interpreted as being mainly due to the significant denitrification that occurred inside the vortex. The total amount of gas and particulate phase HNO3 was close to the NO(y) amount at the altitude of the 22- to 23-km region, suggesting that the conversion of non-HNO3 reactive nitrogen to HNO3 had occurred with a PSC.

Beschreibung: Ozone mixing ratios were measured by ozonesondes on board balloons launched from Esrange, near Kiruna, Sweden (68 deg N, 20 deg E) from January 11 to February 9, 1990. The data obtained prior to a sudden warming on February 7, 1990 show that at potential temperatures between 460 and 640 K, the ozone mixing ratio just inside the polar vortex was systematically smaller than that outside, the largest difference being 29 percent at around 525 K. The ozone mixing ratio at 525 K inside the vortex decreased at a rate of about 1.5 percent per day between January 26 and February 4. The temperatures simultaneously observed were quite often low enough to allow for formation of nitric acid trihydrate particles around this altitude. Depletion of ozone due to highly perturbed chemical conditions in late January and early February is strongly suggested.

Beschreibung: An analysis is given of some results of the LIMS experiment, launched on the Nimbus 7 satellite on October 24, 1978 for the purpose of sounding the middle atmosphere composition and structure. One of the LIMS channels was centered spectrally in the 6 micron region to measure vertical profiles and the global distribution of NO2 mixing ratio. The data reveal that NO2 is highly variable with altitude, latitude, longitude and time. Steep latitudinal gradients are observed in high latitude winter ('the NO2 cliff') when a wave number one pattern exists in the geopotential height field. The daytime gradient under these conditions is less than that for the night. The summer hemisphere column amount is considerably greater (by a factor of about 2) than in the winter hemisphere. The largest mixing ratios occur at 4 mb at night (about 20 ppbv) and 9 mb in the day (about 7 ppbv) and the latitude region of the peak mixing ratio is skewed toward the Southern Hemisphere. The mixing ratio variability is greater at night (by a factor of about 2 to 3) than in the day and there are significant long-term changes revealed by mixing ratio time series analyses on a pressure vs time grid.

Beschreibung: Recent high-resolution observations by Reynolds, Roesler, and Scherb identify the low-intensity nighttime H-alpha and H-beta emission components that originate in the geocorona. They suggest that a Balmer-line-producing mechanism such as the one proposed by Kondo and Kupperian is perhaps responsible for generating the H-alpha and H-beta components of the geocorona. A theoretical calculation was performed using this model in which the geocorona hydrogen is excited through collision with the electrons. The results agree well with the observed intensity ratio, H-alpha/H-beta = 4 to 5. Other consequences of this excitation mechanism are also discussed.

Beschreibung: Measurements of nitric oxide (NO) and total reactive nitrogen (NOy) at altitudes about 12 km were made from two aircraft missions over the central and western Pacific Ocean at latitudes between 65 deg N and 65 deg S during the International Strato-Tropospheric Air Chemistry (INSTAC) program. NO measurements were performed during the first mission in late February and early march 1990, while NOy measurements were performed during the second mission in October 1990. Lowest NO and NOy mixing ratios in the upper troposphere were observed near the equator to be about 30 to approximately 70pptv and 150 to approximately 220pptv, respectively. NOy mixing ratios in the upper troposphere were higher in the northern middle latitude than in the southern middle latitude; 300 to approximately 900pptv in 30 deg N to approximately 50 deg N and 250 to approximately 400pptv around 25 deg S and 50 deg S possibly due to the transport of the polluted air from the boundary layer and the emissions from the commercial aircraft in the northern middle latitudes. Near the equator up to 40 deg S, the NO values showed very high variability and reached between 200 and 2000 pptv. NOy(pptv)/ozone(ppbv) ratios in the upper troposphere were between about 3 and 20 and these values seem to be higher in the lower latitude except for the polluted air in the northern middle latitude. These NOy/ozone ratios in the equatorial upper troposphere are higher than those in the lower stratosphere observed by others. These features of NO and NOy in the equatorial upper troposphere suggest that NOx is produced possibly by the lightning.

Beschreibung: Precision of the chemiluminescent instrument for balloon-borne NO measurement was improved by precise determinations of the flow rates of the sample air and the calibration NO in N2 gas. Based on the new calibration of these values, NO mixing ratio in the stratosphere was reanalyzed. The revision of the NO data does not at all alter the form of the diurnal variation. The average of the four NO profiles between 15 and 32 km obtained at 44 N in autumn is given.

Beschreibung: Simultaneous NO column measurements made in France in September, 1985, using several techniques, are compared with one another. The observed NO distributions vary significantly from day to day. It is shown that NO measurements using IR or UV absorption are self-consistent and show good agreement with predictions from a one-dimensional photochemical model. In situ chemiluminescent measurements produced NO columns which were systematically higher than those predicted.
