Description: Ultraviolet spectra of HD153919 (=3U1700-37) and HDE226868 (=Cyg X-1) were obtained with the ultraviolet objective-prism spectrograph of Skylab Experiment S019. The data consist of unwidened spectra which extend to 1,600A for HD153919 and to 2,400A for HDE226868. The wavelength resolution is about 2A to 1,400A and 12A at 2,000A. For HD153919, an unwidened spectrum of fair quality and extending to a wavelength of 1,600A was obtained at 22 sup h 08 sup m on 1 September 1973. The energy distribution in this spectrum generally resembles that of other reddened O stars. A break in continuum intensity seems to occur at a wavelength of about 1,720A. There is a suggestion of an emission line on the longward edge of the break but this could be either a chance clumping of grains or else a photographic edge-effect caused by the break.

Description: The transient intensity dips of the binary system Cyg X-1 have been observed, using the gas scintillation proportional counter (GSPC) array onboard the Tenma X-ray astronomy satellite. The duration of the dips was in the range from several seconds to 10 minutes, with several dips occurring as much as 15 h before the superior conjunction. Within the dips, complex structures were observed with time scales of several seconds, and, in at least one case, shorter than two seconds. For a dip lasting longer than 10 minutes, a high-quality spectrum was obtained which reveals the K-absorption edge of iron at 7.18 + or - 0.18 keV. On the basis of the observed absorption, it is suggested that the dips are caused by absorption due to relatively cool matter (less than about 30,000 k); the low-energy excess observed during the dips is due either to an extended soft X-ray emitting corona or to partial obscuration of the X-ray source by multiple blobs. From the time structure of the dip, a blob size of the order of 10 to the 9th cm is derived.

Description: The interacting close binary system UW CMa has been observed, in the wavelength range from 1161 to 1188 A, continuously during a complete orbital cycle in 1979 with the Copernicus (OAO-3) U2 spectrometer. The C III multiplet at 1175 A, observed as a P Cygni feature, exhbits a clear dependence on the orbital phase of the binary; the radial velocity variation of this feature lags behind that of the O7 primary component by 0.1 orbital phase, which agrees with the anticipations in an earlier study by the same authors. The radiation-driven matter, flowing out of the binary, originates in the primary component.

Description: Physical interpretation of IUE spectra obtained with the SWP camera may be significantly affected by artificial spectral features of several types. In low dispersion large aperture SWP exposures of sources with nominally featureless spectra, a spectral imprint which alters the shape of the continuum, several spurious "emission features" which recur at fixed locations on the camera target, and fixed pattern noise which can result in illusory emission and absorption features were identified. The anomalies appear in spectra extracted from line by line files generated by IUESIPS at all epochs, regardless of the ITF or rectification scheme used for processing.

Description: Existing high dispersion, long wavelength IUE, high dispersion long and short wavelength, and Balloon borne ultraviolet stellar spectrograph (BUSS) spectra providing a baseline measurement of the ultraviolet spectrum of the Epsilon Aurigae system before eclipse are reviewed. Plans for ultraviolet spectrum IUE observations during the 1982 to 1984 eclipse of Epsilon Aurigae are presented.

Description: Ultraviolet spectra of Omicron And, Alpha CrB, Eta Ori A, and Alpha Vir, which were obtained with the S59 spectrometer at a resolution of 1.7 A in three 100-A-wide regions centered at 2110, 2454, and 2825 A, have been studied for the presence or absence of effects due to their binary nature. As may have been anticipated from their orbital and other characteristics, no indication of strong binary interactions were seen in these observations. However, there are certain spectral peculiarities suggesting the possibility of modifications of spectral classifications for some of these objects. A rather unusual spectral behavior in Alpha Vir is also noted. In addition, based primarily on a review of available literature, attention is drawn to a remarkable property of the third component in Eta Ori A.

Description: Measurements of nitric oxide (NO) and total reactive nitrogen (NOy) at altitudes about 12 km were made from two aircraft missions over the central and western Pacific Ocean at latitudes between 65 deg N and 65 deg S during the International Strato-Tropospheric Air Chemistry (INSTAC) program. NO measurements were performed during the first mission in late February and early march 1990, while NOy measurements were performed during the second mission in October 1990. Lowest NO and NOy mixing ratios in the upper troposphere were observed near the equator to be about 30 to approximately 70pptv and 150 to approximately 220pptv, respectively. NOy mixing ratios in the upper troposphere were higher in the northern middle latitude than in the southern middle latitude; 300 to approximately 900pptv in 30 deg N to approximately 50 deg N and 250 to approximately 400pptv around 25 deg S and 50 deg S possibly due to the transport of the polluted air from the boundary layer and the emissions from the commercial aircraft in the northern middle latitudes. Near the equator up to 40 deg S, the NO values showed very high variability and reached between 200 and 2000 pptv. NOy(pptv)/ozone(ppbv) ratios in the upper troposphere were between about 3 and 20 and these values seem to be higher in the lower latitude except for the polluted air in the northern middle latitude. These NOy/ozone ratios in the equatorial upper troposphere are higher than those in the lower stratosphere observed by others. These features of NO and NOy in the equatorial upper troposphere suggest that NOx is produced possibly by the lightning.

Description: This star, classified F8 IIe + B:, has a very unusual ultraviolet spectrum, with abnormally strong and numerous absorption features in the far-UV and exceptionally strong Mg II emission. There is some resemblance to shell and pre-main-sequence B stars, but it more closely matches the strange spectra of the eclipsing systems VV Cep and SX Cas, and it probably has considerable circumstellar material at fairly high temperature. HD 207739 is probably an interacting binary and needs to be monitored for light and velocity variations.
