Notes: A capillary gas chromatographic method for the quantitative analysis of diethylbenzene fractions is described. Estimation of ortho-, meta- and para-isomers and other C9 and C10 aromatic impurities is covered. The conditions developed involve the use of a capillary column of Carbowax-1540 (300 feet × 0.01 inch) under isothermal operation. The retention index data for a number of aromatics are presented at four temperatures (90, 100, 110 and 120°C). The method offers a good choice for any level of concentration both for isomers and impurities commonly encountered within a reasonable analysis time.

Notes: An indirect UV photometric detection technique is described in which a low concentration of a UV-absorbing compound (UVAC) is added to the mobile phase in reversed phase liquid chromatography, thereby making it possible for non UV-absorbing compounds such as the lower alcohols to be detected by the UV detector. This happens because the injected analyte may extract a portion of the UV absorbing compound from the mobile and/or stationary phase and the complex is co-eluted as a positive peak at the retention time of the analyte. Alternatively, the injected analyte may appear as a negative peak if the UV-absorbing compound is transferred to the mobile and stationary phases. In any case, the injected compound appears either as a positive or negative peak depending on the relative polarities and concentrations of all the compounds in the system. In addition, the resulting excess or deficiency of detection agent in the stationary phase is eluted separately as a positive or negative peak, indicating that the system has returned to equilibrium. In the work described herein, the chromatographic conditions and variables of the indirect photometric technique were studied to develop a quantitative HPLC method for UV-transparent compounds. It was found that under optimal conditions it is possible to determine some analytes quantitatively at concentrations as low as 0.05%.

Notes: A simple pulse dampener is described for use with reciprocating pumps. The dampener may be assembled locally form readily available components and consists mainly of a small reservoir of compressed helium which acts as a cushion to dampen the mobile phase pulsations pneumatically. Depulsing is 99% complete and is uniform through a wide pressure range. The pneumatic dampener allows the use of single- piston reciprocating pumps in conjunction with highly flow-sensitive detectors at their highest sensitivity settings.

Notes: Suitable choice of monomer/nonsolvent and monomer plus solvent/nonsolvent ratios affords a very simple and convenient laboratory scale method for the synthesis of functionalized crosslinked polymers suitable as polymeric supports in a wide variety of applications. The method involves an initially homogeneous solution polymerization which, because of the presence of nonsolvents ultimately produces insoluble, particulate (i.e., nonswollen) resin. Advantages over the usual suspension polymerization processes include the absence of stabilizers and suspension agents and complete freedom to utilize water soluble or water insoluble monomers, or mixtures of the two. Reaction conditions must be determined experimentally for individual systems and a number of representative examples are given.

Notes: The uncatalysed kinetics of self-esterification of trans-16-hydroxy-9-enoate hexadecenoic acid has been found to follow third order. A relationship between intrinsic viscosity and molecular weight of its polyesters [η] = 14.2 · 10-5 M0.95 (25°C, chloroform) has been put forward. The polymolecularity studies of the polyester have shown usual characteristics of integral and differential curves.

Notes: The performance of dental ceramics is reduced in wet environments due to stress-corrosion limiting restoration lifetime. As analysis suggests that fracture is typically initiated from the internal surface, placement of a thin coating before a restoration is cemented to place may prevent fracture if it acts as a moisture barrier. Of coating we tested, a fluoroalkylethyl silane (du Pont MPD-7680) showed promise. This study aimed to test a range of concentrations on glass and to determine any strength improvement on dental ceramics. Glass slides (n = 8-9) were indented (29-N load) stored 24 h, etched, coated with 100, 50, and 25% fluorosilane in isopropyl alcohol, and air-cured for 24 h. The slides were fractured on a biaxial fixture in water at 0.5 mm/min and maximum stresses calculated. Uncoated controls were tested in water and liquid N2 to determine the inert strength without stress-corrosion. Results showed increasing mean strength from uncoated (53.6 MPa) to 100% (68.0 MPa) which compared to the 80.4 MPa inert strength. ANOVA showed P 〈 .05. Subsequently the experiment was repeated on discs of three dental ceramics (n = 7-10): feldspathic (Ceramco), glass-ceramic (Dicor MGC), high-leucite (Optec) with the 100% solution only. Mean strength was significantly (P 〈 .01) enhanced in the feldspathic (56.2 MPa, untreated, 70.7 MPa, treated) but not the high-leucite (83.1, 83.0) or the glass-ceramic (283.9, 271.4). Fluoroalkylethyl silane coating reduced stres-corrosion in glass and feldspathic porcelain. It may be a practical approach to reducing fracture of ceramic restorations. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The copolymerization of acrylonitrile (r1) and p-acetoxystyrene (r2) in bulk yields reactivity ratios r1 = 0.08 and r2 = 0.42. Crosslinked resins are readily obtained by a new type of precipitation copolymerization of acrylonitrile, p-acetoxystyrene, and divinylbenzene. After deacetylation, the phenolic groups afford useful attachment sites for protected amino acids as a first stage in solid-phase peptide synthesis. Reactivity of typical 10% functionalized polyacrylonitrile-based resins is comparable to that of the more usual polystyrene-based equivalents, although swelling characteristics of the two types of resin are very different.

Notes: An X-ray fluorescence method for the measurement of film and coating thickness has been described for use in situations where standard foils of the same material are not available for comparison. The method is based on the measurement of combined mass absorption coefficient of the coating element at the excitation and at the fluorescent energies using thin samples of a compound in which the coating element is present and then calculating the coating thickness using the fluorescence equation. The paper describes the theoretical approach and presents the result of the measurement of certain film and coating thicknesses which support the theoretical considerations.

Notes: Allyl D-glucopyranoside tetraacetate is prepared by reaction of acetobromo-D-glucose with allyl alcool. The glycoside is not readily polymerized by free radical mechanism but on conversion to the epoxide with peracids, polymerization is easily induced with triethylaluminum. The product with a D. P. of 250 is soluble in organic solvents. On alkaline deacetylation the hydrophylic polymer is water soluble but the aqueous solution possess comparatively low viscosity.
