Notes: To improve cell permeability, monomeric 3′-deoxyadenosine (cordycepin) and antivirally active trimeric 3′-deoxyadenylyl-(2′-5′)-3′-deoxyadenylyl-(2′-5′)-3′-deoxyadenosine (2′-5′)d3 (A-A-A); (cordycepin-trimer core) were modified at the 2′-O- or 5′-O-position by myristic, cholic, and folic acid = tetradecanoic, 3α, 7α, 12α -trihy-droxy-5β-cholan-24-oic, and N-{4-{[(2-amino-3,4-dihydro-4-oxopteridin-6-yl)methyl]amino}benzoyl}-L-glutamic acid, resp., linked by a 6-aminohexamoyl spacer. Syntheses of the trimeric educts 21, 27, and 28 were performed by phosphoramidite chemistry, using β-eliminating 2-(4-nitrophenyl)ethyl (npe), 2-(4-nitrophenyl)ethoxycarbonyl (npeoc) and (9H-fluoren-9-yl)methoxycarbonyl (fmoc) groups which allow a deprotection by DBU in an aprotic solvent without harming the ester-bounded conjugates, to give the products 24-26 and 31-33. The metabollically stable (2′-5′)A derivatives 26 and 33, covalently linked to folic acid either at the 2′-terminus or at the 5′-terminus of (2′-5′)d3′(A-A-A), respectively, are a new class of the anti-HIV-1 compounds. Inhibition of HIV-1 reverse transcriptase (RT) activity by 26 and 33 was 45 and 81%, respectively. Only 33 activated recombinant, human RNase L by 35%.

Notes: In order to obtain information for suggesting the most likely molecular and crystal structure of poly[(tetramethyldisilanediyl)ethylene] (PTMDSE) an X-ray study of the structural precursor 2,2,5,5,6,6,9,9-octamethyl-2,5,6,9-tetrasiladecane (TSD) is carried out. The TDS molecule is centrosymmetric, the CSiCCSiSiCCSiC chain having an almost planar all-trans conformation. In the crystal of TSD one can distinguish molecular layers parallel to the a b plane; the long axes of the TSD molecules form an angle of 24,4° with the layer plane; intermolecular contacts in layers are shorter, on the average, than interlayer contacts.

Notes: If the resistance of a conductor is negligible compared with the reactance and if radiation effects are ignored the inductance and current distribution may be obtained by using perfectly-conducting models. In this paper the distribution of current in a system of infinitely-long, perfectly-conducting straight conductors of arbitrary cross-section is shown to satisfy an integral equation of Fredholm type and a general digital procedure for solving this equation, and hence for determining inductance, is given. The relative advantages of stepped, piecewise-linear and piecewise quadratic approximations to the current distribution are studied using arrangements of strip conductors and of isolated rectangular conductors having known current distributions. The advantageous effect of varying the width of the sections used in the computation is also established. It is shown that inductance estimates accurate to within 0·1 per cent can be obtained with a relatively small number of sections and that for a large number of sections the inductance converges on the theoretical value. The paper also examines current distribution and inductance for ‘go-and return’ systems of rectangular conductors, as well as for two paralleled conductors with remote return, and compares the inductances obtained with previous derivations.

Notes: In a previous paper1 a method was described for computing the current distribution and inductance of systems of infinitely-long, perfectly-conducting, straight conductors. The method relied on the solution of a Fredholm Integal equation of the first kind, and in the present paper the method is extended to equations of the second kind in order to study the inductance and a.c. resistance factor of resistive for which approximate formulas and experimental results exist, with which the method is in good agreement over a range of grequencies of particular practical practical interest. Results have also been obtained for rectangular conductors connected in parallel.

Notes: Polymers of norbornenes with SiMe3 and Si(Me2)CH2SiMe3 groups were synthesized and mass transfer properties of the polymers were studied. Ring-opening polymerizations of these monomers were realized in the presence of homogeneous WCl6-based and heterogeneous Re2O7-based metathesis catalysts. Introduction of silicon-containing groups in the polynorbornene main chain results in a drastic increase of the permeability (P) and diffusion (D) coefficients for different biatomic and multiatomic gases. Comparison of polymers having SiMe3 and Si(Me2)CH2SiMe3 substituents shows lower permeability and diffusion coefficients in the latter case. The combination of transport properties (Pi values) and separation factors aij = Pi/Pj of the two new silicon-containing polynorbornenes permits one to consider them as representatives of the most permeable and sufficiently permselective group of polymers. Transport properties of the polymers studied were analysed on the basis of the free volume approach.

Notes: The length of the oviduct, the thickness of its wall, and the height of its mucosal epithelium and cilia were measured in (a) 0-, 2-, 4- and six-month-old rabbits, (b) rabbits ovariectomized at birth and (c) ovariectomized, estrogen-treated rabbits. The length and external diameter of the oviduct increased progressively until four months of age, after which their rates of increase declined. The thickness of the oviductal wall at the uterotubal junction was twice as large as that of the isthmus at two months of age and six times as large at four and six months of age. The height of the mucosal epithelium in the fimbriae was less than that in other oviductal segments at birth, but exceeded that in other segments at six months of age. Ciliated cells and motile cilia were absent 24 hours after birth; they were first observed two months after birth. The cilia of fimbriae were shorter than cilia elsewhere in the oviduct. Neonatal ovariectomy retarded the development of the oviduct and the mesotubarium and caused pyknosis of ciliated and non-ciliated cells of the oviductal mucosa. Cells with scarcely motile cilia were present five and one-half months after neonatal ovariectomy.

Notes: The development of gel permeation chromatography (GPC) has provided a convenient tool for the rapid determination of molecular weight distribution. The question has arisen as to the suitability of the method for specification purposes. The present work, suggested by the Naval Air Systems Command, represents an attempt to assess the precision of the method through a series of tests carried out by a number of laboratories using identical procedures on the same samples. Ten laboratories agreed to take part. Naval Ordnance Station, Indian Head, worked out standard conditions for operation of the chromatograph, for calibration of the columns, and for analysis of the GPC curves. Two samples of polystyrene were used by the various organizations for calibration of their instruments. Number-average molecular weight, heterogeneity index, and cumulative molecular weight distribution curves were determined on four samples of carboxyl-terminated polybutadiene (CTPB) and two samples of hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB), all unidentified except by letter code. All laboratories used identical directions for setting up CTPB and HTPB calibration curves which were based on curves determined from vapor-pressure osmometer molecular weights and GPC count numbers of fractionated material. Variation among the different laboratories was 0.15 in heterogeneity index, and a maximum of 1200 in molecular weight provided one aberrant set of values was eliminated. The six samples had heterogeneity indices from 1.15 to 1.54, while molecular weight varied from approximately 3000 to 6000. The average coefficient of variation of the molecular weight values was 6.2 ± 0.7%, which is quite acceptable. Variation in heterogeneity index was too great for specification purposes when considered among the different laboratories, but may be sufficiently good when measured by any one laboratory.

Notes: The polyimide resin LARC-160 was prepared from diethyl-3,3′,4,4′-benzophenone tetracarboxylate (BTDE), ethyl-5-norbornene-2,3-dicarboxylate (NE), and Jeffamine AP-22. The imidization reactions of NE and BTDE were studied by HPLC, 13C-NMR, and IR. NE imidizes slowly at 12°C; BTDE imidizes when the resin is heated above 100°C. Both imidization reactions proceed directly to the imide. Neither amic acid is present in significant quantities at any stage of the imidization reactions. The monomer mixture has been stored at 12°C for periods up to 14 months. The effects of resin aging at this temperature on the chemical composition of the resin monomer mixture and the imidized polymer formed on curing were investigated. Aging the resin monomer mixture has the effect of partially advancing the imidization reaction. Aging also results in the formation of slightly higher-molecular-weight polyimide chains after curing of the resin at 140 and 180°C. Bisnadimide (BNI) is observed as a major reaction product, regardless of resin age.
