    Notes: A technique for rapid determination of the presence of polystyrene in individual micron-diameter polymer particles of mixed composition is presented. This technique is based upon observation of visible emission from conjugated regions of the polymer backbone, generated photochemically, while the particle is held in an optical trap. Particle emission characteristics are dependent upon particle size and suspending solvent. Emission spectra are provided for single component polystyrene particles and mixed polymer particles containing poly(methyl methacrylate), poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone), and polystyrene. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Notes: Treatement with hydrazine was used to investigate the crystalline morophology of commercially drawn nylon 6,6 fibers. Electron microscopic investigation revealed a stacked lamellar structure for the debris of a highly oriented, rapidly drawn fiber. However, the high molecular weight range of the gel permeation chromatogram of this same oriented fiber indicated the presence of high molecular weight material. This is thought to be due to the production of rod-like, partially extended regions during drawing.

    Notes: A technique for the selective degradation of amorphous regions in nylon 6,6 is reported. Samples of unoriented film and single-crystal mats have been subjected to selective degradation by refluxing in hydrazine. Weight loss, viscosity-average molecular weight, density, and small-angle x-ray scattering of these samples were monitored as a function of time of degradation. In addition, selected samples have been investigated by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and transmission electron microscopy. Based on the results of these investigations it is concluded that the reported degradation technique is unique in that the debris is not monodisperse in molecular weight distribution. The Weight loss, density, small-angle x-ray scattering, and microscopy data demonstrate that the unordered or noncrystalline regions of the material are removed upon treatement. However, the relatively high molecular weight and broad molecular weight distribution of the debris indicate that regular folds at lamellar surfaces are intact after degradation treatment.

    Notes: Samples of polyethylene and polytetrafluorethylene were sintered at 200°C. The samples were cleaved and cut, and the two types of surfaces were studied by ESCA. The possibility of chemical interaction between the two polymers and the formation of a transitional layer is postulated on the basis of the results. A morphological model of the structure of these samples is given.

    Notes: Polyoxymethylene (POM) was photolyzed at 2537 and at 3130 Å at -196°C. The EPR spectra of the radical intermediates were recorded. Photolysis in vacuo produces a small number of radicals, apparently due to the presence of traces of chromophores. Photolysis in oxygen, however, is a type of photo-oxidation. The radicals HCO, , CH3·, and HOO· were detected and identified as intermediate products of photolysis. Hydrogen atoms and hydroxyl radicals were too reactive (i.e., mobile) at -196°C to be observed. Alkoxy and alkyl radicals and the POM peroxy radical were probably formed as well but could not be characterized with certainty.

    Description: Topology and disorder have a rich combined influence on quantum transport. To probe their interplay, we synthesized one-dimensional chiral symmetric wires with controllable disorder via spectroscopic Hamiltonian engineering, based on the laser-driven coupling of discrete momentum states of ultracold atoms. Measuring the bulk evolution of a topological indicator after a sudden quench, we observed the topological Anderson insulator phase, in which added disorder drives the band structure of a wire from topologically trivial to nontrivial. In addition, we observed the robustness of topologically nontrivial wires to weak disorder and measured the transition to a trivial phase in the presence of strong disorder. Atomic interactions in this quantum simulation platform may enable realizations of strongly interacting topological fluids.

    Description: The Berry phase provides a modern formulation of electric polarization in crystals. We extend this concept to higher electric multipole moments and determine the necessary conditions and minimal models for which the quadrupole and octupole moments are topologically quantized electromagnetic observables. Such systems exhibit gapped boundaries that are themselves lower-dimensional topological phases. Furthermore, they host topologically protected corner states carrying fractional charge, exhibiting fractionalization at the boundary of the boundary. To characterize these insulating phases of matter, we introduce a paradigm in which "nested" Wilson loops give rise to topological invariants that have been overlooked. We propose three realistic experimental implementations of this topological behavior that can be immediately tested. Our work opens a venue for the expansion of the classification of topological phases of matter.
