    Notes: Abstract Under physiological conditions, the laryngeal synapse of male Xenopus laevis exhibits marked facilitation during repetitive nerve stimulation. The male laryngeal synapse is weak and requires facilitation to produce muscle action potentials and ultimately sound. The female laryngeal synapse is strong: muscle contractions are produced to single nerve stimuli. We sought to determine if laryngeal synapses of males and females also differ in their ability to facilitate. To measure facilitation, laryngeal muscle action potentials were suppressed either postsynaptically by bathing the preparation in saline containing curare or presynaptically by bathing the preparation in reduced calcium/elevated magnesium saline. Facilitation of postsynaptic potential amplitude or quantal content in response to paired pulses was measured in male and female larynges: there is no sex difference in paired pulse facilitation. Facilitation in response to trains of stimuli, in curare-blocked preparations, increased and reached plateau values more rapidly in females than in males, although the facilitation between the last and first pulses in the train was the same in the sexes. Thus, the sexually differentiated behavior of this synapse is controlled more by a sex difference in synaptic strength than by a sex difference in the ability to facilitate.

    Notes: Abstract A sodium-montmorilion ite from Almeria (Spain), with the structural formula (Si7.64 4+ Al0.36 3+) (Al3.09 3+ Fe0.28 3+ Mg0.609 2+) O20 (OH)4 has been used as starting material for the preparation of samples saturated with lanthanum, neodymium and gadolinium. By application of the Greene-Kelly Li+- test the inability of the sample to re-expand with glycerol, has been observed, in agreement with the existence of a predominant charge in the octahedral sheet. The effect of heating at 300° C, in air and under vacuum, on the swelling capacity of the lanthanide montmorillonites has been studied. Prolonged re-expansion in water after thermal treatment in air is necessary to reproduce the initial basal spacing of the samples. From Fourier transform infrared spectra it is concluded that the interlamellar hydrated lanthanide cation concentration decreases on heating, which agrees with the decrease in the cation exchange capacity claimed in the literature. The mechanism of exchangeable ion migration into octahedral vacant sites with thermal treatments, advocated in the case of lithium-saturated montmorillonite, does not seem to occur in the case of lanthanide-saturated samples. The partial hydrolysis of the interlamellar hydrated cations to polyhydroxycations is proposed as the only mechanism for explaining the loss or exchange able 4f ions.

    Notes: Abstract. Testicular biopsies from 82 oligo- or azoospermic male patients were subjected to immunostaining using anti-human FSH antibodies. Histological evaluation showed normal spermatogenesis (nspg) in 7 (FSH: 2.7±0.7), mixed atrophy (ma) in 63 (FSH: 5.3±0.5), and bilateral or unilateral Sertoli Cell Only syndrome (SCO) in 12 (FSH:21.7±3.5) patients. For the relationship between FSH values and testicular histology, see Bergmann et al. (1994). FSH immunoreactivity was found exclusively in Sertoli cells and in some interstitial cells. Seminiferous epithelium showing normal or impaired spermatogenesis displayed only weak immunoreactivity compared to intense immunoreaction, i.e. large and numerous vesicles in Sertoli cells of SCO tubules in biopsies showing mixed atrophy or SCO. In addition, h-FSH receptor mRNA was demonstrated by in situ hybridization using biotinylated cDNA antisense oligonucleotides. Hybridization signals were found within the seminiferous epithelium exclusively in Sertoli cell cytoplasm associated with normal spermatogenesis and in epithelia showing different signs of impairment, including SCO. It is concluded that: (1) Sertoli cells are the only cells within the seminiferous epithelium expressing FSH receptors; (2) the accumulation of FSH immunoreactivity in Sertoli cells of SCO tubules appears to be a sign of impaired Sertoli cell function.

    Notes: Abstract The time-dependent response of climate changes to changing atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide is modeled using an energy balance atmospheric model coupled to a one-dimensional upwelling diffusion model of the deep ocean. Such a model introduces time delays so that the calculated globally-averaged temperature lags that which would be predicted by assuming radiative equilibrium. The climate model is coupled to a simple carbon cycle model and a ‘social’ model that simulates decreasing emission in response to increasing global temperatures. The thermal inertia of the system is such that temperatures continue to increase after carbon dioxide concentrations are decreasing.

    Notes: Abstract In the search for materials having larger pores than zeolites, the concept of pillared clays gradually emerged. The substitution of zeolite-based commercial catalysts by pillared clays requires the improvement of the thermal and hydrothermal stability of the latter. Characterization of pillared clays has essentially consisted of nitrogen BET specific surface area and X-ray diffraction powder measurements. The study of the texture of pillared smectites really requires the assessment of their microporosity. However, little detailed information is available on the evolution of microporosity with thermal and hydrothermal treatments of these materials. The aim of this work was to supply such information on an alumina-pillared montmorillonite. The effect of La(III) addition was also studied. Up to now the thermal stability of the pillars has been over-estimated from measurement of the basal spacing. However, it has been found that the accessible volume decreases with increasing calcination temperature at a much greater rate than does the basal spacing. Therefore, the generally accepted conclusion that alumina pillars are stable at temperatures even higher than 500°C may give a misleading picture of pore structure evolution with calcination temperature. Lanthanum appears to exert a small positive effect on the thermal and hydrothermal stability of the pillared montmorillonite.
