    Notes: Abstract Several new techniques have been developed to allow the geochemical characterization of shallow pore waters in reefs. First, a new method was developed for using non-metallic well-points to sample pore waters from shallow depths (〈1 m) in coral reefs with unconsolidated substrates. These PVC well-points can be made faster and at less expense than well-points made of stainless steel. They also eliminate metal contamination and are free from the problems of corrosion in sea water. Additional improvements in sampling techniques maximize the spatial resolution of geochemical gradients and address the problems of atmospheric contamination associated with the sampling of dissolved gases. Data taken from Checker Reef, Oahu, Hawaii, illustrate the application of these methods.

    Notes: Abstract  The temporal and spatial variability of inorganic nutrient concentrations in overlying- and interstitial-seawater in Checker Reef, Oahu was examined for response to incident wave magnitude and direction. Well-point samplers were used to profile interstitial nutrient concentrations across oxic-suboxic-anoxic transition zones in the upper meter of the reef framework at four sites aligned across the patch reef. Samples were acquired over February, 1992, during which time dominant E-NE trade winds directed waves across the reef from the fore-reef to back-reef. However, W-SW “Kona” winds periodically interrupted this pattern and directed waves in the reverse direction. The interstitial microbial habitats of fore- and back-reef framework were distinct from those within the mid-reef framework. Maximum concentrations of PO4, Si, and NH4 in interstitial waters occurred at framework depths of 1–2 m, with the highest concentrations occuring within the mid-reef framework. Maximum concentrations of NO3 and NO2, which were used to delineate the core of the suboxic zone, occurred at framework depths of 5–10 cm at all stations and attained 2–4 fold higher peak concentrations within the mid-reef and back-reef than within the fore-reef. Variability in interstitial nutrient concentrations was greatest within the back-reef and is consistent with reversals of wave-direction, with the resultant increases in mixing between interstitial and overlying seawater due to flushing caused by the S-SW Kona wind events. The ratio of molar concentrations of total inorganic nitrogen to phosphate (TIN : PO4) for the fore-reef was 5 : 1; while ratios for the mid- and back-reef were 13–15 : 1, reflecting that the dominant source of particulate organic matter to the fore-reef framework is plankton, while that of the mid- and back-reef is benthic reef plants.

    Notes: Abstract A technique is described for collecting reef interstitial water using manually-driven well points. This method does not require the use of hydraulic drills, and eliminates the problems associated with the casing of boreholes. The technique allows collection of samples from discrete depths within reef frameworks, and produces samples unaffected by atmospheric or surface seawater contamination. Data from Checker Reef, Oahu, Hawaii illustrate the utility of this approach.

    Notes: Abstract Objective. The polymorphism of erythrocyte thiopurine methyltransferase (TPMT) is genetically regulated as an autosomal codominant trait, and so should be congenital. Results. We tested this hypothesis by measuring TPMT activity in erythrocyte preparations from adults and newborns and observed polymorphic distribution of TPMT activity in the adult and newborn erythrocytes. The activity of TPMT was higher in red cells from the newborns than adults. The frequency distribution of TPMT activity was also investigated in the liver and kidney. In the kidney, TPMT activity fell into two subgroups, whereas in the liver the distribution pattern was more complex. The activity of TPMT in erythrocytes and liver from the same subject was correlated, but the values of only half the cases fell within the 95% confidence limits, suggesting that the control of hepatic and/or erythrocyte TPMT is multifactorial.

    Notes: Abstract  The experience gained in the aftermath of serious radiation accidents shows that forests are an important source of external and internal exposure of the affected population. This paper presents the results of an assessment of the major radiological consequences for forests of Russia, most heavily contaminated after the Chernobyl nuclear power plant (ChNPP) accident. Illustrated in the Novozybkovsky district of the Russian Federation, the significance of different forest exposure pathways is estimated and the doses resulting from forest pathways are compared with the doses from agricultural products. It has been found that the contribution of mushrooms and berries to the internal doses of the population, relative to the doses from agricultural products, varied from 10–15% in 1987 to 40–45% in 1996. The results indicate large differences in internal exposure of members of the ”critical groups” and ”normal population”, increasing with time after deposition. Data are presented that give information on the contribution of forests to the collective doses of inhabitants of the area under consideration. It has been shown that for 10 years after the accident (1987–1996), the contribution of forest products to the collective dose of the rural population living in contaminated forests of the Novozybkovsky district, amounts to about 20% (213 person Sv) of the total collective dose of internal and external exposures. However, a potential impact of these products including the dose from exported products is much higher and might reach 659 person Sv. It has been found that in the long-term after the ChNPP accident, serious attention should be given to forest countermeasures, and restoration strategies should be selected on the basis of a combined analysis of the effectiveness of forest and agricultural countermeasures.

    Notes: Abstract. The paper provides an explanation for altruistic behavior based on the matching and learning technology in the population. In a infinite structured population, in which individuals meet and interact with their neighbors, individuals learn by imitating their more successful neighbors. We ask which strategies are robust against invasion of mutants: A strategy is unbeatable if when all play it and a finite group of identical mutants enters then the learning process eliminates the mutants with probability 1. We find that such an unbeatable strategy is necessarily one in which each individual behaves as if he is related to his neighbors and takes into account their welfare as well as his. The degree to which he cares depends on the radii of his neighborhoods.

    Notes: Abstract: Recognition systems based on a combination of different experts have been widely investigated in the recent past. General criteria for improving the performance of such systems are based on estimating the reliability associated with the decision of each expert, so as to suitably weight its response in the combination phase. According to the methods proposed to-date, when the expert assigns a sample to a class, the reliability of such a decision is estimated on the basis of the recognition rate obtained by the expert on the chosen class during the training phase. As a consequence, the same reliability value is associated with every decision attributing a sample to a same class, even though it seems reasonable to take into account its dependence on the quality of the specific sample. We propose a method for estimating the reliability of each single recognition act of an expert on the basis of information directly derived from its output. In this way, the reliability value of a decision is more properly estimated, thus allowing a more precise weighting during the combination phase. The definition of the reliability parameters for widely used classification paradigms is discussed, together with the combining rules employing them for weighting the expert opinions. The results obtained by combining four experts in order to recognise handwritten numerals from a standard character database are presented. Comparison with classical combining rules is also reported, and the advantages of the proposed approach outlined.
