Notes: Abstract We review the results from recent deep HST imaging on faint galaxies. Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) were used to classify faint galaxies based on surface brightness and light profiles. We use available UV + ground-basedU-band images of nearby galaxies to address the effects from the uncertain red shifted UV-morphology on the classifications, resulting in `restframe ANN' classifiers. These distinguish quite consistently between E/S0's, Sabc's, and Sd/Irr for B ≲ 27 mag. A Fourier-based method is used to quantify higher order morphological features and asymmetries in faint galaxies. We review the faint blue galaxy population as classified with these restframe ANN's. The median scale-length at B ∼ 27 mag is r hl≃ 0″.25-0″.3 (∼ 1-2 kpc at z ≃ 1-2). Early and late-type galaxies are fairly well separated in BVI color-magnitude diagrams for B≲27 mag, with E/S0's being the reddest and Sd/Irr's generally blue. We discuss the B-band galaxy counts as a function of type for 18.5 ≲ B≲ 28 mag. We briefly review deep medium-band imaging with HST/WFPC2 in the filter F410M(Lyα at z ≃ 2.4) which yielded 18 faint, compact objects surrounding the radio galaxy 53W002 at z ≃ 2.39, as well as another 30 in random HST parallel fields, plus ground-based images over a larger area. Deep HST/PC images of 53W002 at ∼ 0″.06 FWHM resolution in BVI + redshiftedLyαsuggest that both reflected AGN continuum-light shining through a cone and jet-induced star-formation play a role in its `alignment effect'. We discuss the formation and evolution of 53W002 in the context of its many surrounding sub-galactic sized objects. We discuss the nature of a μJy radio source that remained essentially unidentified in HDF flanking fields. The object was identified in deep HST/NICMOS J- and H-band images, and a single emission line at 6595 Å was detected, most likely Lyα at z=4.42. This faint (H =23.9 mag), compact (r e ≃ 0″.2), red (I-K = 2.0 mag) object is most likely a dusty, star-forming young galaxy with an embedded active nucleus. Finally, HST/NICMOS images are presented of some of the oldest known red galaxies at z ≃ 1.5.Both galaxies are dominated by a r 1/4-profile with 5 kpc scale-length, and are amongst the oldest known relaxed systems at that epoch.

Notes: Summary The biological effect has been investigated of a specific protein with a growth-stimulating activity on epidermal cells. Injection of minute amounts of this factor (EGF) into newborn rats produces hyperplasia of the epidermis with a marked increase in the protein and nucleic acid content per unit of skin area. The activity of a number of epidermal enzymes per unit area is also increased by the epidermal growth factor.

Notes: Abstract The lethal and anti-allatin effects of various doses of 7-ethoxy-precocene II (PIII), topically applied to crowdedSchistocerca gregaria nymphs, 0–27 h after the previous moult, were investigated for the five nymphal instars. The LD (lethal dose) probit lines were parallel for the different instars. The ED (effective anti-allatin dose) probit lines were also parallel. But for each instar the LD and ED probit lines seemed to be convergent toward the higher doses. The LD50 and the ED50 (μg PIII/g fresh weight) were not widely separated; the LD50/ED50 ratio was instar dependent and varied between 1.26 (Vth instar) and 5.35 (IIIrd instar). Thus, separation between lethal effect, anti-allatin effect and no effect was rather poor; indeed in many instances all these types of results were obtained in a group of hoppers treated with the same dose in the same instar. A low precocene susceptibility was observed for the Ist instar and for each subsequent instar the susceptibility further decreased; the LD50 and the ED50 were respectively 886 μg/g and 328 μg/g for the Ist instar, but increased to 14 307 μg/g and 11 367 μg/g for the Vth instar. The anti-allatin effect of the precocene induced various morphogenetic responses: (1) permanent adultiform in the instar next to that treated; (2) death in the moult from the next to the second consecutive instar; (3) permanent adultiform in the second consecutive instar. The occurrence and/or distribution of these responses were instar dependent and for the first three instars also limitedly dose dependent. The anti-allatin effect of the precocene applied to Vth (last) instar nymphs became overt by sterility and lack of yellow colour in the adult. An overt anti-allatin effect was always coupled with a response dependent increase of the duration of the instar treated and/or of the next instar.

Notes: Abstract The tomato yellow leaf curl disease is caused by a hitherto undescribed virus (TYLCV), which attacks tomato and Datura stramonium plants in Israel. The virus, transmitted by the tobacco whitefly, is persistent in its vector, but not for life. A virus-acquisition access lasting 24 hours renders the whitefly inoculative for an average period of 10–12 days. During that period the vector is unable to compensate for its steadily decreasing inoculativity by re-acquiring the virus from a source plant, until it first completely ceases to transmit the virus. Only after such a cessation is the vector able to begin re-acquiring the virus, and thereby regain its inoculative potential as during the previous cycle of acquisition/inoculation.

Notes: . The dependence of the reflectivity on the vapour density, the buffer gas pressure and the pump beams intensity was investigated. The influence of the strong linear absorption was taken into account in a theoretical model that led to a satisfactory interpretation of the experimental results. A maximum reflectivity of 46% was measured under optimized conditions. The effect was also studied through the high-lying bound states . The maximum measured reflectivity was as high as for the first excited state. The effect of the oscillator strength on the reflectivity was demonstrated experimentally and interpreted with the help of a simple theoretical model.

Notes: Summary The paper reports on a social accounting matrix of the Netherlands for 1978. After a brief description of the estimation of the SAM, and a specification of exogenous and endogenous accounts in the SAM, overall accounting multipliers are examined, and decomposed in terms of transfer, open-loop and closed-loop effects.
