    Notes: Summary Horseradish peroxidase was injected into the ciliary body of the eye, and 24 h later it was found in the perikaryon and dendritic processes of the ciliary ganglion neurons, as well as in nerve terminals presynaptic to those neurons. These results indicate that horseradish peroxidase was retrogradely transported and subsequently transneuronally transferred.

    Notes: Summary Preliminary experiments carried out in the Granada province of Southern spain over three years and in three different habitats have shown that a single application of Ethrel (2 chloro-ethyl phosphonic acid) to the olive tree at the beginning of fruit formation is sufficient to reduce significantly attack byPrays oleae Bern. and subsequent damage to the fruit. At the same time the treatment did not cause any detrimental change to the trees and had no measurable effect on the activity of beneficial insects such as Chrysopids (Neuroptera), which are known to be importantP. oleae egg predators in the study area.

    Notes: Summary The ultrastructural study of the frog cornea revealed the existence of intraendothelial nerve fibres. These nerve fibres are unmyelinated elements but surrounded by cytoplasmic lamellae of Schwann cells.

    Notes: Abstract. {In this paper we present linear time algorithms for computing the shortest path tree from a point and the weak visibility polygon of an arc inside a triangulated curved polygon. We also present a linear time algorithm for computing the planar subdivision (in the parametric space) of the set of rays emanating from a fixed arc, such that each face of the subdivision corresponds to rays hitting the same arc of the polygon. Although these results, which involve nontrivial generalizations of known results for rectilinear polygons, may have some interest in its own right, the main result of this paper is a linear time algorithm for computing the conic (circular, elliptic, parabolic, and hyperbolic) visibility polygon of a point inside a simple polygon. The main advantage of our technique over previous results on circular visibility is that it provides a simple, unified approach to conic visibility. Finally, we present a linear time algorithm for computing the planar subdivision, in the parametric space, of two-parametric families of conic rays emanating from a fixed point, such that each face of the subdivision corresponds to conic rays hitting the same edge of the polygon. All these algorithms are asymptotically optimal.}

    Notes: Abstract. Given a set of points S={p 1 ,. . ., p n } in Euclidean d -dimensional space, we address the problem of computing the d -dimensional annulus of smallest width containing the set. We give a complete characterization of the centers of annuli which are locally minimal in arbitrary dimension and we show that, for d=2 , a locally minimal annulus has two points on the inner circle and two points on the outer circle that interlace anglewise as seen from the center of the annulus. Using this characterization, we show that, given a circular order of the points, there is at most one locally minimal annulus consistent with that order and it can be computed in time O(n log n) using a simple algorithm. Furthermore, when points are in convex position, the problem can be solved in optimal Θ(n) time.

    Notes: Summary After 2 h intraocular injections of 19 and 190 nmoles ibotenic acid in the rat retina produced an intensive vacuolization of the inner plexiform layer and cellular alterations, in the inner nuclear layer and ganglion cell layer. These alterations consisted of either cytoplasmic swelling accompanied by clumping of the nuclear chromatin or darkening of the cytoplasm along with nuclear condensation. A week later the retinas were thinner than the controls due to the disappearance of the affected cells. Pre-treatment with diazepam prevents the morphological alterations induced by 19 nmoles ibotenic acid; mainly the swelling, which was completely prevented, while the darkening was reduced drastically, although some vacuolization of the inner plexiform layer is still present.

    Notes: Abstract This work deals with the experimental management of secondary succession in a tropical forest region in Uxpanapa, Veracruz, México. The goal is to establish a system of ‘diversified units’, which will maintain production and biodiversity while obtaining valuable products, primarily for self-sufficiency, and secondarily as cash crops. Three different diversifield units of production have been identified: a) the traditional ‘milpa’, maize polyculture, b) the diversified home orchard and c) the enriched fallows. These units were established in three secondary forests areas, where once thinned or cleared, valuable annual and perennial species were introduced. Total biomass and product yields were analyzed, also labour invested on each production unit was recorded, units were compared on an efficiency basis. Maize yield of polyculture is low but total production is more than twice that of maize monoculture. Efficiency in the polyculture is also higher and its weeds were better controlled. After three years the ‘milpa’ has become an orchard with more than 150 individual fruit trees belonging to 10 different species. Enriched secondary forests show the highest biomass production in the open treatment, 68% transmittance, and the highest survivorship in the moderate shade treatment, 37%.Schizolobium parahybum andCordia alliodora were the most successful forest species due to their fast growth.

    Notes: Abstract Calcium modified lead titanate thin films have been prepared from a sol-gel method. Different thermal conditions have been used for the crystallization of the as-deposited amorphous films. The influence of thermal treatment on the perovskite structure and strain of the films is studied by a grazing incidence X-ray diffraction technique (GIXRD). The ferroelectric response of the films is related to their crystalline structure and chemical composition.
