Notes: Abstract The electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide was studied in methanol-based supporting electrolytes on various metal electrodes at ambient temperature and pressure. The ionophore of the catholyte was benzalkonium chloride, [RN(CH3)2CH2C6H5]+Cl−, where R=C8–C18, the chain length being distributed around C14. A divided H-type cell was used, the supporting electrolytes were 10−2moldm−3 benzalkonium chloride in double distilled methanol (catholyte) and a 10−1moldm−3 aqueous KHCO3 solution (anolyte). Nine different, high purity (〉99.5%) metal electrodes were used: Ti, Fe, Co, Ni, Pt, Ag, Au, Zn and Sn. Carbon monoxide, methane and ethane were the main organic products. Silver, Au, Zn and Sn cathodes allowed for the best faradaic yields of CO production, the maximum amount of CO (71%, 185 mmol) being formed on the Ag electrode. Methane evolved on each of the nine tested electrodes, with current yields in the range from 0.2 to 3.0%. Ethane and ethylene were produced on the nickel electrode, with low faradaic efficiencies, 0.5 and 0.3%, respectively. No dimerization products were detected. This research can contribute to large-scale manufacturing of useful organic products from a readily available and cheap raw material: CO2-saturated methanol from industrial absorbers (the Rectisol process).

Notes: Summary Cardiac hypertrophy in spontaneously hypertensive rats was accelerated by denervation of the left cervical sympathetic ganglia. Supersensitivity due to denervation may also exist in cardiac muscles.

Notes: Abstract The ground-based direction finding carried out at Ceduna, Australia (L=1.93) has yielded the structure for mid-latitude whistlers and their duct ionospheric transmission mechanism. It is found that the ducts tend to take place (or be formed) at the same latitudes and that such sheet-shaped duct includes some inhomogeneities within it which act as field-aligned ducts.

Notes: Abstract It was demonstrated that excised Y-organs of the crayfish,Procambarus clarkii, synthesize in vitro 3-dehydroecdysone (3-DHE) as the major product, together with small amounts of ecdysone. Both were identified by immunological and spectroscopic methods. The increase of ecdysteroidogenesis in the Y-organs was accompanied by an increase of the major free ecdysteroid, 20-hydroxyecdysone, in the hemolymph. This suggests a physiological role of 3-DHE, the details of which are still to be elucidated.

Notes: Abstract A new concentration method for palladium using Mg-W cell-electrodeposition has been developed. The method was combined with electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ETAAS) with a tungsten tube atomizer. The detection limit of palladium by this method was 0.37 ng ml–1 (3 S/N). The severe interferences on the AAS signal of palladium caused by large amounts of Al, Ca, Cu, Fe, K, Na, Pb and Zn were eliminated by the Mg-W cell-electrodeposition method. The method was adapted for the determination of palladium in environmental samples. The recovery of palladium spiked environmental samples was in the range of 102 to 114%.

Notes: Summary Cytoplasmic microtubules of fat-laden cells containing fine lipid droplets, such as brown fat cells and adrenocortical cells, were studied in relation to the metabolism of intracellular lipid. In these cells, the amount and distribution of lipid droplets reflect the state of inherent cellular function. Materials used were primary monolayer culture of fetal rat brown fat cells and that of bovine adrenocortical cells. The method was the immunocytochemistry with anti-tubulin antibody. When brown fat cells were being lipolyzed or the steroidogenesis of adrenocortical cells were being stimulated, the cytoplasmic microtubules in the cells were organized in a radial pattern in response to the behavior of the lipid droplets. It is assumed that the microtubules were in the regulation of cellular function in terms of the metabolism of lipid droplets in these cells. We have devised, in the course of the current study, a double fluorescence technique as an observational method whereby microtubules were observed immunocytochemically and lipid droplets by a secondary fluorescence with phosphine E staining.

Notes: Summary The renal effects of manidipine hydrochloride were investigated in ten hospitalised patients with mild-to-moderate essential hypertension. After a one-week placebo period, manidipine was given for 1 week in a dose rising from 5 mg to 10 mg or 20 mg daily to normalise the mean blood pressure measured after 2 h. Blood pressure had decreased from 171/101 to 147/86 mm Hg at the end of manidipine treatment. The pulse rate was unaltered. Renal vascular resistance decreased from 1.90 to 1.33 dyn · s · cm−5/1.48 m2 × 104, and renal blood flow and glomerular filtration rate increased from 522 to 662 ml · min−1 · 1.48 m−2 and from 81 to 93 ml · min−1 · 1.48 m−2, respectively, in spite of a fall in renal perfusion pressure. Manidipine reduced the filtration fraction from 0.260 to 0.243, suggesting a preferential reduction in efferent arteriolar resistance. The fractional excretion of sodium and potassium did not change. Manidipine did not produce any significant alteration in plasma renin activity or in the plasma aldosterone concentration. The results indicate that manidipine has favourable renal effects and a concomitant hypotensive action in patients with mild-to-moderate essential hypertension.

Notes: Summary The pharmacokinetics of a new Class I antiarrhythmic agent, SUN 1165, has been studied in 32 patients with varying degrees of renal impairment following a single oral dose of 50 mg. The apparent volume of distribution at steady state was 1.48 1 · kg−1, the absorption rate constant was 2.2 h−1, and plasma protein binding was 26.8% in subjects with normal renal function. These variables were not altered with renal impairment. More than 60% of SUN 1165 given orally was excreted unchanged via the kidney, both by tubular secretion and glomerular filtration. The elimination rate constant, the apparent total body clearance and the apparent renal clearance were linearly correlated with the endogenous creatinine clearance. The half-time of elimination was 3.4 h in normal subjects and it was prolonged to 23.7 h in severe renal failure (creatinine clearance below 20 ml · min−1 · 1.48 m−2). Dosage adjustment of SUN 1165 is necessary in renal failure.

Notes: Abstract Interaction between laser light and a micrometer-size spherical particle causes an optical resonance in its interior since a spherical wall acts as a cavity. The present work seeks to investigate the preparation of organic-inorganic particles containing laser dyes and demonstrate their lasing behavior. Rhodamine 6G was incorporated into organic-inorganic spherical particles of micrometer-size using sol-gel technique. Phenyl triethoxy silane was used as a starting material for particles. Particle size was 1–10 μm and dye content was 1–7 × 10-5 mol/g. A particle was set on a glass plate in air and pumped by a second harmonic pulse of Q-switched Nd-YAG laser (532 nm wavelength). From a particle of 6 μm in diameter, a strong laser emission peak was observed at 598 nm wavelength which corresponded to the whispering-gallery mode resonance.
