Notes: Abstract One of the main results says that ifC is a binary linear code of length 4t and of dimension greater than 2t, thenC contains a word of weight 2t and this bound is best possible. Several results of similar flavor are established both for linear and non-linear codes. For the proof a lemma introducing the binormal forms of binary matrices is needed. The results are applied to determine the coset chromatic number of Hadamard graphs, to solve a problem of Galvin and to give a short proof of a theorem of Gleason on self-dual doubly-even codes.

Notes: Abstract A remarkable increase of both catalytic activity and the selectivity of dimers has been found for propylene dimerization affording 2,3-dimethylbutenes by a nickel-phosphine catalyst system composed of nickel naphthenate/P(cyclo-C6H11)3/A lEt3/ (CF3)2CHOH in the presence of CF3SO3H and/or Me2SO4: a combination of these effective additives also enhanced the reaction rates.

Notes: Abstract A spin model is one of the statistical mechanical models which were introduced by V.F.R. Jones to construct invariants of links. In this paper, we give a new construction of spin models of size 4n from a given spin model of size n. The process is similar to taking tensor product with a spin model of size four, but we add some sign exchange. This construction also gives symmetric four-weight spin models of the type introduced by E. Bannai and E. Bannai.

Notes: Abstract Perovskite oxides, (Ba0.95Ca0.05) (Co1−x Fe x ) O3−δ, are prominent materials for oxidative coupling of methane and for CO2 absorption at high temperature, and these oxides before and after treatment in CH4 and CO2 atmosphere were analysed by Mössbauer spectroscopy. The perturbation of microstructure by substitution of Ba sites with Ca, and the electron transfer of mixed valences in Fe and Co ions with the formation of oxygen vacancies at high temperatures, are considered to contribute strongly to the selectivity of CH4 coupling and the rapid absorption of CO2 at high temperatures.

Notes: Abstract The narrow band noise and the transient voltage oscillation were investigated in a k0.3MoO3 sample, which showed different I–V characteristics in the non-linear conductivity region for dc and pulse methods. For repeated current pulses, after a sufficiently long duration of dc current, the voltage response showed relaxation behavior with a relaxation time of about 30 min at 77 K. Similar relaxation was also observed for the opposite case of a dc current applied after repeated pulses. The slope of frequency of voltage oscillation against CDW current was constant through these relaxation process in both dc and pulse cases. But the peak of narrow band noise is larger and sharper after repeated pulses than in the dc stationary state. This result was understood as an enhancement of the coherent-phase region for voltage oscillation in the case of repeated pulses.

Notes: Abstract  Despite their wide distribution in various organisms, no physiological roles have been proposed for the human blood-group-ABO (ABH)-active trisaccharides. Here we show that monoclonal antibodies against human blood-group-B-active trisaccharides (B-substance) completely block the Ca2+-dependent cell-cell adhesion system of frog (Xenopus laevis) embryonic cells. Synthetic B-substance or B-active glycopeptides also disrupt the Ca2+ -dependent cell-cell adhesion. These results suggest that blood-group-B-active substances play a role in cell-cell adhesion. Blood-group-B-active substances were found as glycoproteins and as glycosphingolipids. In order to identify B-active glycoproteins active in cell-cell adhesion, we purified B-active membrane glycoproteins by two-dimensional electrophoresis and found that they are 45- to 58-kDa proteins with pI(s) ranging from 4.0 to 5.3. They are glycosylphosphatidyl inositol (GPI) anchored. Amino acid sequence analysis showed that the purified B-active GPI-anchored proteins are homologues of soluble Xenopus cortical granule lectins (CGL). The results suggest that the B-active membrane glycoproteins are GPI-anchored forms of the lectin and are directly involved in frog Ca 2+-dependent cell-cell adhesion.

Notes: Abstract Reduced glutathione (GSH) was applied to prevent browning in shoot tip explants of apple (Malus pumila Mill.). Development was compared between shoot tips treated either by (a) dipping into 0.1 mm GSH solution prior to culture (dip treatment), (b) dipping into the GSH solution and transferring to a medium containing 0.1 mm GSH (dip-and-add treatment), or (c) without dipping or culturing with GSH (control). In the dip treatment, 100% of shoot tips developed into normal shoots after 120 days, while the results with the dip-and-add treatment and control were 50 and 40%, respectively. The results show that application of antioxidant GSH in the initial phase of culture promoted the normal development of shoot tips.

Notes: Summary A male Japanese infant was found to have a chromosomal aberration of del(21)(qter→q22.1-2) and decreased superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in erythrocytes and polymorphonuclear and mononuclear leukocytes. The cuprozinc enzyme (SOD-1) level was 40–50% of normal, while the cyanide-insensitive managanese enzyme (SOD-2) activity was within the normal range. Determination of SOD activity in blood cells is a valuable method of classification of the syndrome.

Notes: Abstract With regard to Ni-50Ti-Cu (at%) shape memory alloys, phase transformation characteristics under no stress were studied at the copper content of 6–9 at% using differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction analysis. In solution-treated materials, B2-orthorhombic transformation occurs at the copper content of 7.6 at% or more. With the increase in copper content, the temperature for B2-orthorhombic transformation gradually increases, whereas the temperature for the orthorhombic-monoclinic phase transformation resulting from decreasing temperature rapidly falls. The phase transformation temperature in 27% cold-worked materials remains virtually constant, despite the copper content, and increases with increasing heat-treatment temperature. The hysteresis in the B2-orthorhombic transformation stabilized via cold working is as low as ∼18 K.

Notes: Abstract SnO2 gas-sensor films were modified by implantation of gold and iron ions. The change in electrical resistivity of the films caused by inflammable gases, H2, CO, CH4 and C2H5OH, was measured in the temperature range 100–500°C, and compared to non-implanted films. The morphological changes caused by gold and iron ion implantation were also investigated by atomic force microscopy. After ion implantation and annealing at 600°C, the sensitivity to H2 and CO gas was found to increase, and the dynamic range of the sensitivity to ethanol was improved. The sensitivity to CH4 was low before and after ion implantation. Fe2O3 (3%SnO2) film was also modified by gold ion implantation for comparison.
