Notes: Summary Immunocytochemistry of paraffin sections of Bouin-fixed rat pituitaries with antiserum to luteinizinghormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) revealed two types of cells. Type I cells exhibit granular staining throughout their cytoplasm. The immunoreactivity of type II cells is confined to a much smaller area of the cytoplasm. Type I cells are located in the ventral margin of the pars intermedia, the region between the pars intermedia and the pars distalis, and the pars distalis adjacent to this region. Type II cells have a broader distribution in the pars distalis, but tend to concentrate in the region of the pars distalis near the pars intermedia. Type I cells are distinct from gonadotropes. Type II cells appear to comprise a subgroup of gonadotropes. Staining in type I, but not type II, cells in pituitary explants, maintained in serum-free media for seven days, is as intense as that in normal pituitary tissue. The data suggest that the type I cells are producing an intrinsic LHRH-like material and may be responsible, in part, for the regulation of some gonadotropes.

Notes: Abstract A modelling strategy for the prediction of both the scalar and the position-dependent thermal error components is presented. Two types of empirical modelling method based on the multiple regression analysis (MRA) and the artificial neural network (ANN) have been proposed for the real-time prediction of thermal errors with multiple temperature measurements. Both approaches have a systematic and computerised algorithm to search automatically for the nonlinear and interaction terms between different temperature variables. The experimental results on a machining centre show that both the MRA and the ANN can accurately predict the time-variant thermal error components under different spindle speeds and temperature fields. The accuracy of a horizontal machining centre can be improved through experiment by a factor of ten and the errors of a cut aluminium workpiece owing to thermal distortion have been reduced from 92.4 µm to 7.2 µm in the lateral direction. The depth difference due to the spindle thermal growth has been reduced from 196 µm to 8 µm.

Notes: Abstract The collision identification and object-to-object distance calculation play an important role in the motion planning for robots and manufacturing facilities. A formulation for collision identification and distance calculation in motion planning, using neural networks, is presented. The method calculates the distances between the vertices of an object and the given polyhedral obstacles using the modified Hamming net. This formulation is derived from the homogeneous geometric transformations. The method can be used to identify collision between the vertices of a moving object and the obstacles, to calculate the distance and interference between the moving object and the obstracle, and to find the optimal direction for collision removal. The parallel computation formulation is simple in form, and can be extended to line-to-object and object-to-object collision identification and distance calculation. The method can considerably decrease required computation time, and has the potential for being applied to on-line trajectory planning.

Notes: Abstract  We report a red shift in the light emission from thin film electroluminescent devices consisting of ZnS co-doped with MgF2 and MnCl2 as the phosphor semiconductors and Ta2O5 films as insulators. The electroluminescence spectrum shows two peaks at ∼615 nm and at ∼670 nm. The devices have a threshold of about 110 V under 50 Hz a.c driving voltage and show brightness over ∼100 cd/m2 at 160 V. The devices are compared with MgS co-doped devices which show green shifted light emission.

Notes: Abstract This paper is concerned with the nonparametric estimation of the higher order cumulant spectra of vector-valued stationary random fields onZ d by smoothing the periodograms, whereZ is the space of integers and the dimensiond≥1. We derive the asymptotic cumulant properties of the spectral estimates, and consider an application to multidimensional nonlinear systems identification. Numerical examples with simulated data are provided.

Notes: Sesbania rostrata in pure and amended Pb/Zn tailings. About 90% of seeds of S. rostrata germinated in pure Pb/Zn tailings, which contained high concentrations of Pb, Zn, Cu, and Cd. Although seedling growth suffered from the adverse environment of Pb/Zn tailings, they became established on tailings stands, in the greenhouse, as well as on the actual tailings dam, and completed their life cycle in 4 months. Dry matter production and nitrogen accumulation was 3200 kg/ha and 69.4 kg/ha, respectively in the actual tailings dam. Applying inorganic fertilizer to Pb/Zn tailings led to no obvious improvement in growth and nodulation of S. rostrata, while tailings amended by river sediment or domestic refuse rich in organic matter improved the growth and nodulation of the species. Azorhizobium caulinodans survived and formed N-fixing stem and root nodules in S. rostrata grown in pure Pb/Zn tailings with a nodule biomass exceeding 300 mg fresh matter per plant.

Notes: Summary Three lactate dehydrogenase isozymes and malate dehydrogenase purified from mouse tissues were inactivated with time by low concentration of gossypol. The degree of enzyme inactivation is both gossypoland enzyme-concentration-dependent. Under the same experimental conditions, lactate dehydrogenase-X and lactate dehydrogenase-5 were inactivated faster than lactate dehydrogenase-1. NADH was shown to partially protect the enzymes against inactivation by gossypol. The results of this study suggest that the enzymes are inactivated by the minor components in gossypol preparations. Isozymes of glutathione S-transferases were reversibly inhibited by gossypol. The inhibition of transferases by gossypol was shown to be competitive with respect to the 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene. It is proposed that the male antifertility effect of gossypol may be related to the selective inactivation of sperm-specific lactate dehydrogenase-X.

Notes: Abstract The deformation properties of PVC have been studied under high pressure. Craze initiation and yield criteria have been proposed. The brittle-to-ductile transition was observed between 1×107 and 2×107 Pa, which is a relatively low transition pressure compared to polystyrene. Deformation in the post-yield region occurred by neck formation and subsequent drawing to produce chain orientation. When PVC was exposed to the pressure-transmitting fluid, silicon oil, a strong environmental stress cracking effect was observed.

Notes: Abstract A comprehensive error compensation system has been developed to correct geometric, thermal, and cutting force-induced errors on a turning centre. The basic approach to error compensation is proposed in this paper. The implementation of error compensation control and of hardware configuration of the system are also presented. A total of 11 geometric and thermal error components and 10 cutting force-induced error components can be compensated for using this system. Performance evaluations have been carried out using actual cutting tests. Experimental results show that the diameter accuracy of the part has been improved more than 5 times and taper accuracy of the part has been improved about 5 times.
