Notizen: Abstract This paper treats travelling waves in a heterogeneous, inviscid, non-diffusive fluid bounded between two horizontal boundaries. The fluid has two incompressible components of different, but constant density and is acted on by gravity. The flow is steady when viewed in a moving reference frame and gives rise to a quasilinear elliptic problem with an eigenvalue parameter related to the wave speed. The small amplitude solutions are analyzed using a dynamical systems approach. A center manifold reduction in combination with a conserved quantity for the flow is used to parametrise all ‘small’ solutions of the full elliptic system in terms of solutions of an autonomous first order ordinary differential equation for a principal component of the wave amplitude. The result is a characterization of all small waves, irrotational in each fluid, near the critical speed for the system. They are: solitary waves; surges connecting distinct conjugate flows at extreme ends of the channel; conjugate flows; and periodic waves.

Notizen: Abstract We consider operator equations of the form $$\left( {A_0 - \lambda _0 B_0 } \right)u = N\left( {\lambda ,u} \right)$$ , (1) where A 0, B 0 are linear operators between real Banach spaces and N(λ, u) is a nonlinear operator with the property that N(λ, 0)=0 for all real λ. Assuming that λ 0, a specific value of λ, is an isolated eigenvalue of A 0 − λB 0 of multiplicity m, we study the phenomenon of bifurcation for equation (1), where it is merely assumed that N(λ, u) is Lipschitz continuous in u near u=0 with a small Lipschitz constant. It is shown that when (1) has a variational structure, for each suitable normalization of u, two non-zero solutions (λ, u) occur near (λ0,0) (m pairs occur if N is odd in u). Further results concern the existence of branches of solutions when m is odd and the asymptotic behavior of solutions in terms of the size of the Lipschitz constant. The motivation for the study and the main application of the results concerns buckling of a von Kármán plate resting on a foundation.

Notizen: Abstract This paper examines causes and consequences of wetland losses in coastal Louisiana. Land loss is a cumulative impact, the result of many impacts both natural and artificial. Natural losses are caused by subsidence, decay of abandoned river deltas, waves, and storms. Artificial losses result from flood-control practices, impoundments, and dredging and subsequent erosion of artificial channels. Wetland loss also results from spoil disposal upon wetlands and land reclamation projects. Total land loss in Louisiana's coastal zone is at least 4,300 ha/year. Some wetlands are converted to spoil banks and other eco-systems so that wetland losses are probably two to three times higher. Annual wetland losses in the Barataria Bay basin are 2.6% of the wetland area. Human activities are the principal determinants of land loss. The present total wetland area directly lost because of canals may be close to 10% if spoil area is included. The interrelationship between hydrology, land, vegetation, substrate, subsidence, and sediment supply are complicated; however, hydrologic units with high canal density are generally associated with higher rates of land loss and the rate may be accelerating. Some cumulative impacts of land loss are increased saltwater intrusion, loss of capacity to buffer the impact of storms, and large additions of nutrients. One measure of the impact is that roughly $8–17 × 106 (U.S.A.) of fisheries products and services are lost annually in Louisiana. Viewed at the level of the hydrologic unit, land loss transcends differences in local vegetation, substrate, geology, and hydrology. Land management should therefore focus at that level of organization. Proper guideline recommendations require an appreciation of the long-term interrelations of the wetland estuarine system.

Notizen: Abstract Published data and analyses from temperate and tropical aquatic systems are used to summarize knowledge about the potential impact of land-use alteration on the nitrogen biogeochemistry of tropical aquatic ecosystems, identify important patterns and recommend key needs for research. The tropical N-cycle is traced from pre-disturbance conditions through the phases of disturbance, highlighting major differences between tropical and temperate systems that might influence development strategies in the tropics. Analyses suggest that tropical freshwaters are more frequently N-limited than temperate zones, while tropical marine systems may show more frequent P limitation. These analyses indicate that disturbances to pristine tropical lands will lead to greatly increased primary production in freshwaters and large changes in tropical freshwater communities. Increased freshwater nutrient flux will also lead to an expansion of the high production, N- and light-limited zones around river deltas, a switch from P- to N-limitation in calcareous marine systems, with large changes in the community composition of fragile mangrove and reef systems. Key information gaps are highlighted, including data on mechanisms of nutrient transport and atmospheric deposition in the tropics, nutrient and material retention capacities of tropical impoundments, and N/P coupling and stoichiometric impacts of nutrient supplies on tropical aquatic communities. The current base of biogeochemical data suggests that alterations in the N-cycle will have greater impacts on tropical aquatic ecosystems than those already observed in the temperate zone.

Notizen: Abstract The emittance of soils depends upon the moisture content, the porosity of the soil, the soil surface roughness, and the mineralogical properties of the soil particles. An attempt has been made to model the spectral emittance of soils in terms of these characteristics using deterministic and stochastic methods. For the general case of moist soil one must consider the fact that soil is basically a three-component system of air, water, and organic or inorganic material. For practical analysis using remote measurements one usually does not have knowledge of the relative amounts of each component. Thus, a stochastic model which specifies the emittance as functions of the statistics of the individual constituents seems to be the most reasonable practical approach for the analysis of soils. We have developed a stochastic model to represent the soil emittance in terms of probability distribution functions of the soil components. Also presented is a formula for soil emittance in terms of moisture content.

Notizen: Abstract Static zero field Gaussian Kubo — Toyabe relaxation functions for muons in isotropic muonium atoms are presented. That is, as with diamagnetic muons, an average of the spin dynamics of a muon in an isolated isotropic ground state muonium atom is taken over an isotropic Gaussian continuous classical local random magnetic field distribution. This motion approximates the exact quantal spin dynamics generated by the dipole-dipole interactions between the muonium atom and the surrounding nuclear spins associated with the site at which the muonium atom has stopped. Expressions are derived for triplet muonium only since, in general, singlet muonium is not observed. For normal nuclear spins and ground state muonium, the resulting relaxation functions are identical to the standard diamagnetic function (except for a shift in the time scale).
