    Notes: Summary In Windermere, and some other lakes in the English Lake District, the vernal increase of Asterionella formosa ceases when the concentration of silica in the water falls to approximately 0.5 mg/l. When this planktonic diatom is cultivated in water from one of these lakes, Windermere, the addition of small amounts of phosphate phosphorus permits the growth of so large a crop that all the silica present is incorporated into the cells. The intensity and duration of the illumination and the temperature of the water effect this relationship between silica, phosphorus and the growth Asterionella. Therefore, the regular, observed relationship between the concentration of silica and the vernal maximum of Asterionella in nature may be related to the amount of this substance in the water, to the amount of phosphate phosphorus present and to the rate of growth imposed upon this diatom by the light and temperature conditions in the lake during the period concerned. The possible importance of the relatively low concentration of phosphate phosphorus in certain very unproductive lakes is discussed.

    Notes: Summary Chrysochromulina parva Lackey (type, and only known freshwater species, of the genus Chrysochromulina) has been detected in the plankton of Windermere and other lakes in the English Lake District. This is the first time that this species has been recognised outside the type locality (Scioto River, U.S.A., Lackey 1939). Observations on its behaviour in life, including seasonal and depth distributions, are recorded with the light microscope. Electron microscopy, mainly of material in culture, has added details of the fine structure. The combined results show (a) that the organism is abundant in several lakes at certain times of the year, though it had escaped detection earlier because of its extreme fragility, (b) that the cells are biflagellate, with a third filiform appendage which is a haptonema as in marine species and not a third flagellum, (c) that delicate plate-scales are sometimes detectable on the cell surface, (d) that the micro-anatomy of the main cell components is comparable to that of several marine species except for minor differences in the Golgi body and in the presence of a contractile vacuole. An emended taxonomic description is provided.

    Notes: Summary Desmids in Windermere, a lake in the English Lake District, are often parasitized by chytridiaceous or biflagellate phycomyceteus fungi. Descriptions are given of the fungal parasites concerned, several of which cannot yet be named. The relationship between the severity of parasitism, decrease in the number of live cells of desmids and increases in those of dead cells are described and illustrated. There is evidence, from over twenty years of observations on desmids and their parasites, that the examples given here are not peculiar to the years concerned and that parasitism occurs similarly in other lakes. Parasitism does not alter the overall seasonal pattern of periodicity of the desmids; it can have a marked effect on interspecific competition. There is no evidence that desmids must be already adversely affected by other environmental conditions before severe parasitism can arise. Indeed the evidence available suggest that parasites commonly infect healthy and rapidly growing cells.

    Notes: Summary Tetrasporopsis pseudofenestrata and Chrysolykos gracilis are new species. Chrysococcus cystophorus f. astigmata Skuja and Cyclonexis uraliensis Pochmann are new British records. Chrysolykos planctonicus Mack was recorded but not named by Scourfield (1930). The taxonomy of Cyclonexis Stokes is confused. It is uncertain whether C. annularis Stokes and C. erinus Jane are separate species but, if they are, the only definite records of the former are from the U.S.A. The known British populations of C. erinus seem to lack discobolocystes though Hovasse (1949) doubts this. The other European populations may or may not possess these organs.

    Notes: Abstract Changes in the annual population densities of Ceratium spp. in three adjacent English lakes, Windermere, Esthwaite Water and Blelham Tarn, are summarised over the 41 year period 1945–1985. In these lakes the genus is represented by two species, C. hirundinella (O.F. Müll) Bergh. and C. furcoides (Levander) Langhans. Although the species have not been distinguished over the entire study period, they have been shown by examination of preserved samples to undergo marked changes of relative abundance in Esthwaite Water. Both long-term (years) and short-term (within year) changes of populations densities of Ceratium spp. are considered in relation to possible controlling factors including recruitment of the inoculum, nutrient enrichment, physical stability and fungal epidemics. Given an early inoculum, the relative success of Ceratium populations in these lakes decreases along gradients of increasing mixed depths, increasing turbulence and decreasing retention times. The potential for good population growth is regulated by energy inputs, lake bathymetry and hydraulic characteristics. The realisation of such growth is governed by nutrient availability and microbial grazing. The significance of large between-year differences of populations of Ceratium spp. for general lake metabolism is illustrated for summers of contrasting production in Esthwaite Water.

    Notes: Summary Various methods for the estimation of populations of algae and other small freshwater organisms are described. A method of counting is described in detail. It is basically that of Utermöhl and uses an inverted microscope. If the organisms are randomly distributed, a single count is sufficient to obtain an estimate of their abundance and confidence limits for this estimate, even if pipetting, dilution or concentration are involved. The errors in the actual counting and in converting colony counts to cell numbers are considered and found to be small relative to the random sampling error. Data are also given for a variant of Utermöhl's method using a normal microscope and for a method of using a haemocytometer for the larger plankton algae.
