Notes: Abstract Reducible transition metal oxides are well-known promoters of the hydrogenation of CO on noble metal surfaces. In this study the promotional effect of vanadia and ceria adlayers on Rh and Pd surfaces was investigated with emphasis on the effect of the oxidation state on CO adsorption and catalytic activity. “Inverse supported catalysts” were prepared by UHV deposition of V and Ce on the noble metal surface (Rh(111), Pd(111) or Rh foil). After oxidation and specified reduction, the reaction kinetics on polycrystalline Rh was measured at atmospheric pressure, and the molecular and dissociative chemisorption of CO on Rh(111) and Pd(111) and the methanation kinetics on Rh(111) were investigated by molecular beam techniques. On Rh(111), the probability of CO dissociation and the reaction rate are enhanced by submonolayer VO x deposits. Local pressures between 10-2 and 1 mbar are sufficient to drive the methanation at 573 K with measurable amounts of products, accompanied by significant restructuring of the catalyst surface. Although the reaction on Rh is generally promoted by small quantities of vanadia and ceria, the reaction rates depend strongly on the extent and temperature of hydrogen reduction. The observed increase of the reaction rate by reduction up to 673 K can be correlated to concomitant changes of the structure and composition of the VO x deposits. If the reduction temperature is raised above 673 K, metallic V is partially dissolved in the bulk, and the resulting V/Rh subsurface alloy exhibits a particularly high activity. Contrary to vanadia, ceria islands on Rh promote the initial reaction only after a low-temperature reduction, but the activity decreases after reduction above 573 K.

Notes: Abstract LetJ n (z) be the Bessel function of the first kind and ordern, and letf(z) be an analytic function in|z|≤r (r〉0); then it is known that the Bessel expansion $$f(z) = \sum\limits_{n = 0}^\infty {a_n J_n (z) (Neumann series)} $$ converges for|z|≤r. In this paper, we shall be concerned with the construction of “approximating” functions to (1) which are easily computable (rational functions). Namely, making use of the generating function for the family {J n (z)}, a rational functionf k (z) with prescribed poles can be obtained such thatf k (z) “approximates” tof(z) in the following sense: $$f_k (z) = \sum\limits_{n = 0}^\infty {\bar a_n J_n (z)} with \bar a_n = a_n , n = 0,1,...,k - 1;$$ and it will be said thatf k is an “approximant” of orderk. When orthogonality conditions with respect to a linear functional defined from the sequence {a n} are used, then the order of approximation may be increased up to2k. An algebraic approach of these approximants is carried out.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we propose a new approach that addresses both the problems of design validation and hardware testing since the early stages of the design flow. The approach consists in adapting the mutation testing, a software method, to circuits described in VHDL. At the functional level, the approach behaves as a design validation method and at the hardware level as a classical ATPG. Standard software test metrics are used for assessing the quality of the design validation process, and the hardware fault coverage for assessing the test quality at the hardware level. An enhancement process that allows design validation to be efficiently reused for hardware testing is detailed. The approach is shown to be efficient upon a set of representative circuits.

Notes: Abstract Gating in flow cytometry is used to select subpopulations of cells for analysis. The technique is critical for subsequent analysis in order to select the population, free of debris and unrelated cells. Accurately quantifying subpopulations in clinical cases is necessary for correct diagnosis. Human lymphocytes are selected by backgating on populations of CD45+high CD14− cells. These reagents are not available widely across species. In veterinary medicine, markers to identify lymphocytes are usually limited to T-lymphocyte, CD4, CD8, and B-lymphocyte surface antigens. A standardized gating technique using a T-lymphocyte antibody is described and is applicable across species where limited phenotype markers are available.
