Notizen: Abstract The asymptotic properties of the density of quantum states for a fundamental (super)membrane are discussed in the semiclassical approach. Matching of the BPS part of the spectrum for a superstring and a supermembrane makes it possible to get stringy results via membrane calculations and vice versa. The brane-black hole correspondence (on the level of black hole states and brane microstates) is also studied.

    Thema: Biologie
Notizen: Abstract The available chromosomal data on Hoplias malabaricus make possible the identification of three major karyotypic forms in this fish group, all of them bearing 2n = 42 chromosomes, and named as Cytotypes A, B and E in previous studies. While Cytotype A and B share a general macrokaryotypic feature, Cytotype E is well differentiated concerning the morphology and size of some chromosome pairs. On the other hand, Cytotype B presents an exclusive XX/XY sex chromosome system. Six allopatric populations, belonging to Cytotype A, were subjected to cytogenetic analysis in the present study. Despite their basic karyotypic similarity, some differences in the chromosome formulae, as well as in the heterochromatin and Ag-NORs locations, were observed among populations indicating that they no more correspond to a unit, at least in the cytogenetical level.

Notizen: Abstract The results of an experimental study of surface-tension effects in kinematic capillary viscometers of the suspended-level type are presented. These results are deduced from a comparison with measurements obtained with a special Ostwald viscometer in which surface-tension effects are negligibly small. It is shown that surface-tension effects in suspended-level viscometers are sensitive to the shape of the capillary exit. Recommendations how to minimize these effects are discussed.

Notizen: Abstract New accurate experimental data are presented for the viscosity of liquid toluene. The viscosity was measured relative to the viscosity of liquid water with the aid of an Ubbelohde capillary viscometer. The data cover a temperature range from approximately 25 to 75°C and are represented with high precision by an Arrhenius equation

    Thema: Biologie
Notizen: Abstract Cytogenetic studies were carried out in the fish, Hoplias malabaricus, from the Parque Florestal do Rio Doce (Brazil). This population is characterized by 2n = 42 chromosomes for both males and females and an XX/XY sex chromosome system, confirmed through several banding methods. Females show 24 metacentric, 16 submetacentric and 2 subtelocentric chromosomes. Males show 24 metacentric, 17 submetacentric and 1 subtelocentric chromosomes. While the X chromosome is easily recognized (the only subtelocentric element), the Y chromosome is somewhat difficult to identify but appears to correspond to the smallest submetacentric in the male karyotype. In-situ hybridization with an 18S rDNA probe showed 10 well-labeled chromosomes, including the X chromosome. The 5S rDNA is interstitially located in a single metacentric pair independent of the 18S rDNA sites. The NOR on the X chromosome is always active and occurs adjacent to a heterochromatic distal segment on the long arm. Variations in size of the NORs and/or heterochromatic segment correspond to a polymorphic size condition observed in the X chromosome. The present results confirm the XX/XY sex chromosome system in the population analyzed as well as a new cytotype in the Hoplias malabaricus group.

    Thema: Biologie , Medizin
Notizen: Abstract The ultrastructure of promastigotes ofLeptomonas samueli was studied by the freeze-fracture technique. Both the P and E faces of the plasma membrane ofL. samueli have intramembranous particles. However, the particle density was higher in the E than in the P face. The P face of the flagellar membrane had few particles whereas abundant flat membrane particles were evident on the E face. An arrangement of particles indicating membrane specializations was seen on the flagellar membrane and on the membrane lining the flagellar pocket. Cellular structures such as the nucleus, peroxisomes, the mitochondrion, and microtubules were also studied.

Notizen: Abstract The fine structure of promastigotes ofLeptomonas samueli is described. This protozoan revealed several features in common with other trypanosomatids. A large membrane-bound cavity containing many vesicles was observed near the nucleus. Pinocytotic vesicles were seen arising from the membrane lining the flagellar pocket. They are associated with some microtubules which originate in the flagellar pocket region and extend toward the multivesicular structure. Morphometric analysis made on electron micrographs showed a mitochondrial relative volume of 0.11 and a peroxisome relative volume of 0.08. Determination of the number of sub-pellicular microtubules in different regions of the protozoon body show that the largest number is found in the region containing the Golgi complex. Carbohydrates were detected using the periodic-acid-thiosemicarbazide-silver proteinate technique. Reaction products were seen in the plasma membrane, in the membrane of the Golgi complex, and in the membranes which form the multivesicular structure. Two cytochemical methods were used to locate basic proteins. Using the ammoniacal silver method reaction products were seen only in the nucleus. With the ethanolic phosphotungstic acid method reaction products were seen in the microtubules which form the flagellum, in the peroxisome-like organelle, and at the region of adhesion of the flagellum to the cell body.
